The Germanic name: Utal (Othala)
 The Norse name: Odal
 The Anglo-Saxon name: Otael (Ethel)
 The Icelandic name: Odal
 The Norwegian name: Odal
Othala symbolizes the sacred land, including
the interaction and bond that people have with
the land. The people of northeastern Germany
and the Netherlands called this rune "Eeyeneerde,"
meaning "own earth" or "own land." By comparison,
Othala refers to ancestral heritage in the form
of family, clan, and tribal land. Early Europeans
perceived land as wealth that was never sold, but
instead was handed down from generation to generation.
Also, as each successive generation died and was buried,
in many ways its energy returned to the Earth. This
vitalized the Earth with ancestral power that could
be called upon by future generations in time of need.
This analogous to the concept of the "sleeping king"
or "sleeper"-a great leader who sleeps within the land,
often in a mountain or cave, waiting for the time when
he is awakened to come to the aid of humankind.
Fehu is wealth that you can trade and sell, whereas
Othala represents wealth that is immobile and can be
neither sold nor given away. Like the wealth of
information coded in human DNA, Othala influences
every aspect of your being. It symbolizes the
sovereignty of the land.
Odin-Odin was the All father who was procreator,
the original couple, and the energies of Oneness.
At some point Odin was all things and, as all
things, he was both male and female. It was not
until later that he became a male god.

The oldest literal meaning of Othala is "noble" or
"prince," denoting regal status. Odin is the god of
Othala as he quests for all wisdom. This is the
ultimate quest because, as with the grail cup,
it offers the possibility of everlasting immotality.
When you understand and come to know the polarities
of Oneness, you can control the powers of life and
death. But as Odin found out, you cannot change the
Orlog.
Othala represented either Odin's final destruction
at the hands of the Fenris Wolf, or his ascension
into the divine state of being all things at all
times. Othala is the moment and place when all the
elements of Oneness are reconciled and balanced, and
if your magic has endurance, you reach your intention
and actualize your dreams. If you aim for divinity,
then divine is what you will become: action follows
thought.

The O-rune is the rune of Oneness. Tap into
Oneness and you tap into everything, by virtue
of the fact that everything is connected together
into one giant web. Oddly enough, the Internet
could be called a representation of Othala,
because it shows the interconnectedness of
everything as it moves in the whole of Oneness.
When you experience Oneness or, as the Norse
might say, "Wodan-ness," you have wisdom about
everything that was, will be, and is. Energy is
always on a one-to-one ratio, for this is the
essence of the Orlog, the energy that brings
everything together into one. Orlog also begins
with the letter "O."
When you reach the state of Othala, your desires
manifest according to your intention, and you become
wise like Odin. Othala may represent everything
coming to divine fruition or, on the other pole, being
completely destroyed, as in Ragnarok. It is all or
nothing as the third aett closes, in what can only be
termed the divine forces of Oneness. If you travel
wisely through the runic stream, you become one with
everything and become a divine being. If you resist
the Orlog and refuse to heed the wisdom of the runes,
you go down in a hail of destruction, to rise once
again in the primal fire of Fehu. All paths hopefully
lead you to the divine state of affinity with Oneness,
at which level anything is possible. Be careful what
you dream, because it will become reality.
The Rune of Inheritance or Physical Possessions
can represent zeal, dedication, vision, hard work,
and thus be a positive rune; but it can also symbolize
greed, parsimony, and the materialistic hoarding
of wealth and resources. In reversal it suggests
obstruction, frustration, or delay.
Othala, one of the last in the sequence of the
runes, signifies return to the apparently earthly
area of richess and property, and this is why it
makes a whole with the first rune, Fehu. However,
while Fehu stands for movable property, Othala
signifies land, the only property that is
unchangeable, constant. Land, in sense of property,
defines who we really are in the manner that it
defines where we are. Finally, it is our home.
This rune brings us the seventh key point,
which lies in the center. Meeting here there are
places in between Midgard and Asgard, between
us and our goods. This is the axis our lives
spin round. The idea of land or property is
just a symbol of the request that we find our
own "center" which will bring sense into
our lives, this being the true goal and
destination of this travel through the runes.
All adventures and travels end with one's returning
home, but this does not mean that they are
all senseless. On the contrary, it is only
thanks to departing in the first place that
we can learn and know what "home" really is,
i.e. what the spiritual center means in reality.
There is no place, indeed, capable of replacing
one's home, however only provided one truly
understood where the home is. The fact is that
neither of the lessons along the way will
make any sense if we fail to integrate it into
our everyday life and find the central point,
the one round which all new experiences are
possible to organize and arrange.
Othala is not the ending of just a small
cycle of the third aett, but also of the
whole rune travel, in this manner taking us
back to the beginning, however on a higher
level.
When used in divination it signifies: property,
land, inheritance, heritage, home, duration,
synthesis, the sense and feeling of belonging.
For use in magik: to round-off land or
property, for project completion i.e. execution,
for reinforcement of family ties.
When Othala is drawn in an upright position it
suggests financial and material gains. This can be
a donation or help received from relatives, especially
those elderly ones, from friends, or from someone
who appreciates i.e. praises highly what one does and
wishes to let one know that he is not alone. That
donation, gift, can also appear in form of inheritance
granted to one by some relative in the last will.
Othala points to your stubborness and insisting on
own opinion; thus in coordination and combination
with other runes it can possibly point to fields
where you should necessarily demonstrate some more
flexibility.
When Othila is drawn in the reversed position it
suggests failure, misfortune i.e. accident, and big
damage. The person asking the question is advised
to be exceptionally careful in performance of own
tasks and duties, because some damage might be
produced meaning big material losses, most
frequently the word being of damage produced
to expensive mechanical equipment due to
inappropriate handling and use. The person's
life and health are not threatened, and thus
no reason to fear in this sense. Only necessary
is some special care in the coming period, as
this is how an unwished material loss is
possible to prevent.
