The Germanic name: Daaz (Dagaz)
 The Norse name: Dagr
 The Anglo-Saxon name: Daeg
 The Icelandic name: Dagur
 The Norwegian name: Dagr
Dagaz means "day," and depicts the interplay and
balance between polarities-light and darkness in
particular. Dagaz is also the rune of midday (noon)
and midsummer summer solstice), both representing
times when the light of the sun is at its height.
Metaphysically, these are times of power, strength
of mind, and well-being.
As the light of day, Dagaz also represents the moments
of sunrise (dawn) and sunset (twilight), and in this
context it is the rune of total awakening. What is
awakened is the light within yourself, which then becomes
one with the light around you. In magic, dawn, noon, and
sunset are considered power times-times when the portals
between worlds open for an instant, and then close again.
Odin-The all-seeing, all-knowing, enlightened inventor
of the arts, Odin traveled to the Nine Worlds of the
Yggdrasil. He was a potent magician, sorcerer, and healer,
as well as the forefather of most of the noble families of
the north. His son was Baldur, the light. His watch-wolves,
Geri and Freki, were always at his feet. Wolves are predators
that often hunt at Dagaz times-dawn and dusk-when the light
is dim and prey are at a disadvantage.

Dagaz relates to dvergar, which are the dwarfs, formed
from maggots and worms in the flesh of Ymir, the giant. The
dwarfs, who are less powerful than the Aesir, but more
intelligent than humans, live in the lower world of Svartalfheim,
which means "dark elf home." Depicted with dark skin, long beards,
green eyes, and a short stocky build, dwarfs had caps and cloaks
that could make them invisible at will. Related to the dark-light
polarity of the Dagaz rune, dwarfs could not come out during
daylight because if they did, the light would turn them to stone.
In the "Lay of Alviss," the underground dwarf asks for the hand
of Thor's daughter Thrud. Thor puts thirteen questions to Alviss
that he must answer in order to win Thrud: what is the name of the
world, sky, moon, sun, clouds, wind, calm, fire, sea, trees, night,
wheat, and beer-in all worlds of the Aesir, Vanir, giants, dwarfs,
and elves. Alviss knew the answers to all the questions, but
answering them occupied so much time that the sun had already
entered the room. Alviss had to run out in hurry or be turned
to stone.
The polar opposite of Svartalfheim is Alfheim, which lay
between Asgard and Midgard, the land of the white (or light)
elves. This land represents the bright aspect of Dagaz. Frey,
the sun god, was the lord of Alfheim. Often coming to the aid
of the Aesir and Vanir against their enemies, the elves could
enter Midgard any time they desired. Gentle and kind, with no
ill will or greed, and as light as air itself, they possessed
supernatural powers and were considered divine helpers.

Dagaz embodies the ritual fire of the hearth and
the mystical light that can be used in magic. The
Dagaz rune is related to daylight and is the rune
of divine light. Pulling the D-rune can indicate
a need for protection from people doing negative
work against you.
Dagaz refers to that shamanic state in which
polarities of energy come together-"the razor's
edge." This may be a time of enlightenment and
awakening. It means not only the harnessing of
the powerful fire energy that gets things done,
but the wisdom to best use these energies. Fire
energy can get things done or really burn things
up. When used with wisdom, it can help your plans
come to fruition, in much the same way that the sun
provides the sustenance, the flame, that sustains
all life. The more sunlight, the more life: the
ratio is proportional. There is a saying that the
branch the sun shines on the most bears the most
fruit. In this context, the Dagaz rune may indicate
a need to get outside into the sunshine, to energize
yourself so that your life can become more fruitful.
The Rune of Breakthrough, Increase, and Security
indicates that the light of the world shines brilliantly
upon you; growth may not always be dramatic, but it
will be steady and sure. This tremendously positive
rune can overcome the negativity of those around it.
This rune marks the end of the third aet, leaving only
Othila to round off the cycle. Same as in the preceding
two aets, Dagaz concludes this third with light and hope.
And while Wunjo represents the earthly glory, and Sowilo
the celestial brilliance of the Sun, Dagaz connects them,
introducing abstract celestial light and power into the
everyday earthly life.
This runes shape speaks of different kinds of association.
Resembles Gebo with its balance of the male, female, and the
four elements, however Dagaz establishing a firmer connection
between the divinely and earthly spaces. Same as Ingwaz, it
symbolizes harmony in earthly environment, however also making
a step further, showing us that the source of harmony is in
fact spiritual in quality.
Dagaz connects all six key points - four cardinal points,
the divinely province above us inhabited by Gods, and all
spirits of the Earth and Nature. All these points are balanced
and integrated in this rune's meaning, the rune uniting them
in this manner and bringing them thus united into our everyday
life.
When used in divination it signifies: happiness, success,
satisfaction, activity, realization of the wished way of
life.

For use in magik: for achievement of positive
results.
Dagaz has no specific upright and reversed positions in
interpretation.
Dagaz denotes clarity and light - everything that has
been unclear is now cleared, and this is what brings a
significant change into everyday life.
Dagaz says that the person asking the question is awaited
by a sudden complete change of his/her way of life. This
can come as a consequence of a strong external situation
one will have to get subdued to, or as a result of necessary
changes that will be imposed on a rather large number of
people surrounding the one asking the question.
Abrupt change in the life path is also possible to be
brought about if the person asking the question settles
his/her own accounts with his/her own self, and reveals
the causes and reasons of own dissatisfaction. It happens
sometimes that the person's life gets afterwards directed
toward spiritual self-realization, including getting extracted
from the previous environment, or even leaving to go to a
monastery.
Dagaz can also mean that the person asking the question
will finally find solution to a very serious problem bothering
and pestering him/her for quite some time.
In some instances Dagaz stands for prosperity. When Dagaz
is interpreted special attention is to be paid to the neighboring
runes as well as to the rune positioned opposite it in the Runic
Wheel circle, as depending on these runes the meaning of this one
is altered and varies.
