The Germanic name: Eys (Ehwaz)
The Norse name: Ehol, Ior
The Anglo-Saxon name: Eoh
The Icelandic name: Eykur
The Norwegian name: Eh, Eol

Ehwaz embodied the energy of
the twin gods, who often ruled as polar
opposites. Odin, for example, ruled over
the warm part of the year, and Uller ruled
over the cold part. Ehwaz emphasizes the
harmonious interaction of energies within
these polarities, rather than their competitive
nature. In the same way that the warm and cold
polarities move the Earth through the yearly cycle,
polarities move energy by their dynamic interplay.
Ehwaz is the horse rune, and the movement
generated by the polarities is symbolic of a horse
carrying its rider. As the rune of Sleipnir, Odin's
swift eight-legged steed, Ehwaz made possible the
journey between the worlds of Yggdrasil. In magic, the
rune can confer the ability to move between other realms
of reality and states of perception. In this way, it
connects to the concept of a "fetch," the spiritual
horse, so to speak, that carries a person on the journey
between worlds. This journey facilitates soul travel
through which information and knowledge can be obtained.

Freyja/Frey-Originally from the Vanir
and the children of Njord (the sea god)
and his sister, Nerthus (the earth goddess),
Freyja and Frey represented the sacred twins.
They were siblings and lovers. Legend had it
that Frey incarnated on Earth as Fridleef I,
King of Denmark in 40 B.C.E. Associated with
spring, summer, and the fertile earth, Freyja
departed the Earth during autumn and winter,
and her leaving caused the leaves to fall and
the Earth to don a frigid mourning cloak of snow.

Odin's horse, Sleipnir, was the product
of the god Loki and a powerful stallion named
Svadilifari. This union came about when the Aesir
hired a stonemason to rebuild Asgard's stone wall,
destroyed in the war with the Vanir. The stonemason's
price was to marry Freyja and take possession of the
sun and the moon. The gods agreed to the price only after
Loki assured them that they would never have to pay,
because the stonemason would be given only six months
to do the job, and he could not possibly finish on time.
Near the end of the six months, the gods realized that the
stonemason had used the strength of the stallion Svadilfari
in order to complete the job promptly. All that was left to
be built was the gate! Odin ordered Loki to solve the problem.
Loki's solution was to turn himself into a mare and lure Svadilfari
away from the wall, but in order to keep the stallion away,
Loki had to mate with the beast. In the end, Loki returned to
Asgard with the eight-legged colt Sleipnir, which he presented
as a gift to odin, telling him that without question the steed
was the fastest ever. It was upon Sleipnir that Hermod later
rode to the netherworld of Hel to ask Hella, protectress of the
realm, to return Baldur so that he might become a living god again.

This rune represents a journey in consciousness that
is protected, supported, or guided. The emphasis here
is on partnerships and working together, and often denotes
assistance from another person or energetic helper, such
as a "fetch" (a spirit double). This relates to the Valkyries,
Odin's servants, who escorted the dead and were called "fetch
wives."
Ehwaz relates to partnerships and joint ventures of
all types. It can unify two people in a strong, harmonious
relationship, either on a personal or a business level.
Ehwaz is a great rune for marriage, because it emphasizes
cooperative interaction between people. Because of its
connection with traveling between different realms, Ehwaz
represents the astral or energetic body-the part of your being
that can be projected outside your physical body. Ehwaz denotes
dream power and astral travel.
The Rune of Movement suggests changes, whether gradual
spiritual progress, a new address, or a break through.
These changes will usually be for the better, and Ehwaz often
retains its positive connotations even when reversed.
Horse is the symbol of power in almost all cultures and
historic periods. Strong, quick, faithful, keeping relations
with people in a unique manner. It was thanks to
horse that performance of tasks was always possible, of such that
otherwise supersede human strength, as well as covering of distances
impossible to imagine by people going on foot. Mare is the symbol
of birth and fertility, stallion that of crude life energy. At the
same time, horse is one of rare animals that have not been deprived
of either strength or power through processes of being tamed and
domesticated.
Same as the Sun does, Ehwaz represents energy and motion. This also
includes respect for the very source of the power. The word is not of
some impersonal source of energy - this is a living creature whose
needs and wishes must be observed, as, if case be the contrary, the
being would be reduced to the level of a slave. This is the power
as a divine gift (Algiz), reminding us constantly that we can only
utilize it as an assistance and help, not for the purpose of producing
injuries and wounds. Same as a double-edged sword, the horse also is
a mighty weapon, but it is exactly because of that that it can only be
used carefully and with full responsibility.
That is the balance which, on the path of pure magic, has to be grasped
and understood.
When used in divination it signifies: transport, movement, assistance and
help, energy, power, communication, willpower, and imprudency.

For use in magik: for realization of power, establishment
of communication, and for casting spells.

Ehwaz holds the meaning of motion, including traveling and/or
transportation of goods. Ehwaz says that, regardless of the
type of question that has been asked, the direction of
the motion is right and that the same path is to be
pursued along in order to achieve positive results.
Ehwaz's upright position announces change of the place of
residence. At the same time it can also be an advancement, progress,
or leaving to accept some better positions that will bring a
deserved success, public recognitions and promotions.
In its reversed position Ehwaz stands for an overseas trip,
during the course of which the person asking the question
will complete and execute a very successful business deal.
