The Germanic name: Laaz (Laguz)
 The Norse name: Lgr
 The Anglo-Saxon name: Lagu
 The Icelandic name: Lgr
 The Norwegian name: Laukr
The meaning behind Laguz relates to
the leek, a hardy and vigorous vegetable.
From this association with the leek comes
the idea that Laguz embodies the energy
that makes living things live, including
the source of this life. Contained within
this concept are the natural laws and
primal forces of life as well as the
opposite polarity-death or the cessation
of life on this earthly plane.
The L-rune represents fluidity, and is
associated with the power of the ocean
tides and the force of rivers and
waterfalls. Its energy is one of going
with the flow, because to struggle with
it is to drown in its depths. Most of
the human body is made up of water, and
water is an element that we require on
a regular basis for survival.
Njord-Father of Frey and Freyja,
Njord was the god of the sea and
winds, of summer, and calm, friendly
weather. He was handsome and usually
dressed in a green tunic. At his
seaside palace, Noatun, he calmed the
ocean storms called up by Aegir, the
angry sea god. Swans were sacred to
Njord because they first appeared each
year at the beginning of summer. Seals
were also his favorites because of their
playfulness. The sponge is called Njord's
glove.
Ran-In contrast to Njord, she is called
"the robber," and is the goddess of the
stormy sea and the drowned. To drown was
to go to Ran, and the wise carried gold
on a sea voyage to appease her, just in
case the ship went down. Wife to Aegir,
Ran had nine giant daughters, the nine
waves, called "the claws of Ran." Together,
Ran, Aegir, and their nine daughters dragged
ships down into the depths of the ocean. On
the other hand, Ran could steady any seafaring
vessel with one hand. In her mermaid form,
she was seen combing her long hair as she
reclined on the shore.

Laguz represented the primal waters
in Nifelheim, which contained the dormant
yeast of life. When the yeast became
solidified by ice and then energized by
the fire of Muspelheim, the potential for
life became realized. From water come the
basic ingredients for life. Laguz represents
the source from which all rivers of energy
flow into the ocean, which in this case is
Oneness.
In its Old Norse form of logr, meaning
"sorcery," this rune relates to the goddess
Freyja, who introduced the practice of magic
to the Aesir when she went to live with them
in Asgard. In particular she taught Odin seidr,
a type of love magic that had previously been
practiced only by women.

Tied to birth, Laguz is a potent rune
for initiation. it was a Norse tradition
to sprinkle newborn babies with water to
show their worthiness for life. Symbolic
of the seed as it meets water and begins
the life process, this rune is also tied
to the leek, an organic entity that links
the white under part with the green upper
part. It is a symbol of the expansion of
life in both physical and spiritual realms,
and Laguz is the planting of energetic
patterns that sprout quickly from the Earth.
Middle Earth is the third aspect in this
triad, which as a whole denotes the fluidity
of the life force. From the concept of the
river, we understand that everything is
connected to the whole, and that within the
whole everything is relative.
Also connected to this concept are the
tides, which energetically move inward
and outward, rising and ebbing on a daily
basis. The tides reflect energy's natuarl
flow in an up-and-down, back-and-forth
motion that is universal. It is important
to remember that, when you practice magic,
you need to account for this ebb and flow
of energy as it moves back and forth between
negative and positive poles. The idea is to
accentuate the positive flow while minimizing
the negative.
The Rune of Intuition suggests protection
either by supernatural forces or your own
psychic gifts. This powerfully female rune
is very positive when upright but dangerous
when reversed, and strongly suggests betrayal
or self-betrayal.
 Water usually produces pleasant associations,
such as peacefulness, love, intuition-speaking
generally: emotions. However, for the Norns
water is the sea, and sea is a dangerous
and unpredictable place, home of the Midgard's
Snake, and many a seamen's grave. Laguz thus
reflects both bright and dark aspects of the
element of Water. Speaks of primary i.e. primal
fears of dark, cold, and all dangerous things
hidden deep in our subconsciousness.
Similar to Eihwaz, that makes us face our own
mortality, Laguz induces us to analyse and study
the roots of our behavior and offers us
possibilities and opportunities to discover new
paths of spiritual development. Understanding
and wisdom acquired through acceptance of the
meaning of Eihwaz and the runes that follow
prepare us to face our own dark aspect (reflected
by Laguz) and to accept it as an integral part of
the character. Laguz trains us and prepares us
to help others in the process of self-analysis and
study, in this manner becoming our spiritual
counsel.
When used in divination it signifies: emotions,
fear, unprecise thinking, hidden things,
revelation, intuition, offering advice.
For use in magik: to reinforce psychological
abilities and capacities, oppose and contradict
fears, stabilize mental or emotional
disturbances, reveal hidden things.
This is the rune of the psyche,
or the rune of intuition. It brings
into the closest plane the intuitive
or psyche-related connections with
the world surrounding one, and points
out that full attention should be
directed to hidden feelings. Possibility
exists of a female influence being important
and significant for answering the question.
For the person asking the question this rune
can also mean leaving to where he/she will
undertake university studies, which will
prove successful, however also other kinds
of advancement and progress in academic
spheres.
If the question is asked by a woman, the
rune may also mean birth of a child.
In its reversed position Laguz warns
the person asking the question not to
go over the borders of own authorizations.
If the person fails to observe such an advice,
his/her behavior may disappoint friends,
relatives, or colleagues, which will produce
an unpleasant situation for his/her own self.
Such an incautious acting may produce break
in relations that, regardless of additional
effort invested, will not be possible to
compensate for.
