Smithing

The first half of the smithing skill is smelting, which is the process of converting your ores into bars so that they are ready to be hammered into weapons and armor. To smelt an ore, you must use it with a furnace.

Furnace Locations
Location Information
Al-Kharid The closest furnace to a bank in the free world. Very convenient.
Falador Convenient to use if you have just been mining in the Dwarven Mine. Relatively close to a bank and available to free players.
Lumbridge One of the least used furnaces, the closest bank is in Draynor but it's still quite a walk.
Wilderness Eastern Ruins at level 28 wilderness. Can be used to smelt ores while mining in the nearby Hobgoblin Mine
East Ardougne * Members only. Close to a bank and convenient.
Lost City * Members only. A bit far from the bank and not too used.
Shilo Village * Members only. You need to have started the Shilo Village Quest, and it costs 20gp to use every time. However it is one of the closest furnaces to a bank.
Entrana * Members Only. Mostly used by players crafting glass.
Tyras Camp * Members only, and probably the least used furnace ever.
Rellekka * Members only; only usable after completing Fremennik Trials Quest.
Port Phasmatys * Members only. Closest furnace to bank in game; wearing Ghostspeak amulet speeds banking but is not required
Keldagrim* Members only. Pay the Factory foreman 100 gp to use it for ten minutes. Not too convenient to bank.

Training Smithing
First of all, always smelt your bars at Al Karid, because it is the shortest distance from a bank for f2p's. Always hammer your bars in Varrock, from west bank to the anvils just south of it because it is the shortest distance between an anvil and a bank for f2p's.

Level 1-
Begin by making bars of bronze in the hundreds, maybe 300 or so. smith them into the best bronze you can make. Once you have 30 or so smithing, you can switch to iron.

Level 30-
Now its time for iron. As with bronze, collect hundreds of iron, then smith all the bars at once. If you are a member, get a ring of forging so that the 50 percent chance of failing is canceled. Do not smith them until you reach 33 smithing so you can make the iron into iron plate bodies, which can be sold to the general store or the armor store in Varrock for a decent amount of gp. Continue making iron plate bodies, and making 100's of iron bars at a time, until you have reached 47 smithing.

Level 47:
Its time for steel. It will be significantly harder and harder to level up at this point, so it may bore you. Like before, you should make your bars in the hundreds- collecting 1000 coal and 500 iron is a good place to stop getting the ores and making bars. When you have 48 smithing, make the bars into steel plate bodies. You can sell steel plate bodies in bulk to people with 55 magic for 1000-900 gp each. You probably shouldn't train using mithril until you can make mith platebodies, which go for about 3000 each for high-alching.

Some Techniques*
-If you are a member, the best way to train smithing is probably by making cannonballs*. You can buy steel bars for 500-550 each, make them into cannonballs*, then sell each cannonball* for 200 each. Each bar makes four cannonballs*, so you make 300 gp profit each bar!! -If you have a smithing level in the high-mid 60s or higher, and 43 magic, a good idea is to go into the hobgoblin mines in the wilderness, or mining guild, and make mith bars there. Bring a fire staff, your pick, nature runes, and teleportation runes if you are mining in hobgoblin mines. Mine mithril and coal ore, and cast superheat item to make the ores into mith bars. Then, store them in the bank and start over. This is a good way to get mith bars and to train magic/smithing without a lot of walking.

70+
Pretty much, the fastest way to train at this level is the cannonballs*, or buying ores and making mith plates and coming out even. Steel is usually the best way to train, even in the high levels. There is not much more to know if you have made it this far, but just continue to buy ores and smith, smith, smith. It will get boring so you will probably want to train other skills as breaks.

The Basics of Mining

Mining is very useful and one of the best skills in the world of RuneScape because it is probably the easiest way to make money. All the different ores come from different colored rocks that are roughly based on the ore... a mithril rock would be blue in color. As your mining level gets better, getting ore will become quicker and easier. When you have mined a rock, the ore will disappear and the rock will become a light grey colour. You will have to wait for it to respawn before you can mine it again. Rocks that are harder to mine take longer to respawn, e.g. Runite will take the longest to respawn. Another thing that affects respawn time is how busy the world is: the more people logged in, the faster the respawn time.

Dwarven Stout
There is a way to temporarily raise your mining and smithing level by 1. Go to the bar in Falador, and talk to the barmaid. Order a Dwarven stout (they cost 3 gold coins each). When you drink it your Mining level will temporarily go up by 1, as will your Smithing level. Drinking the stout will also lower some levels, but they will restore within a few minutes. These are also available free in the Dwarven pass under the Wolf Mountains (must have completed Fishing Contest to access) between Taverley and Catherby.

Gems
Sometimes when you are mining, you will find a gem. These can either be sold or cut and used to craft amulets and the like. The higher the level needed to mine a rock, the higher the chance of finding a gem. You will also find more gems if you are wearing an enchanted dragonstone Amulet of Glory*. Members can mine gems at the Shilo Village mine inside the walls (must have completed Shilo Village Quest), which yields only gems.

Shilo Village Rocks*
If you have completed the Shilo Village Questyou will have access to some new gem rocks. Mining each gem yields 65 mining experience. The rocks randomly yield uncut Jade, Opal, Red Topaz, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, or Diamond gems. If you are wearing a charged Glory Amulet*, you will get tons of daimonds, and rubies, along with emeralds and sapphires, which is a great way to train crafting and make cash. Sometimes i sell my daimonds in f2p worlds for 6-8k each =].

Mining Guild
The Mining guild is in Falador and is attached to the Dwarf Mines. You will need level 60 or higher Mining to get in. Inside, there are 40 coal rocks and 5 mithril rocks.

Random Encounters
There are a few random encounters while mining. Occasionally a Rock golem will appear, which will attack you. Its' level is based on your combat level. Sometimes when you are mining, gas will start coming out of the rock. If this happens, stop mining that rock because it will explode and break your pick. If your pick breaks, talk to Nurmof to get it fixed. He will charge you for this. Every now and again the head of your pick will fly off and land on the ground nearby. Pick it up and use it with the pickaxe handle to fix it.
