In the summer of 1974 the Holy Father, Pope Paul VI and His
Eminence, Cardinal Timothy Manning again honored Christ the King
Parish by recognizing its pastor;s work. The title of Prelate
of Honor (formerly Domestic Prelate, as was Monsignor Peter Corcoran)
was bestowed on Father Henry Alker. In June, Monsignor Alker
received the new honor from His Eminence along with other prelates
at Immaculate Conception Church in Los Angeles. Later that month
the parish celebrated the event with a Concelebgrated Mass of
Thanksgiving and a reception at the Parish Hall.
As the parish neared its golden Jubilee, the Archdiocese selected
it to be one of the several "pilot parishes" for a
self-study program. In a very comprehensive questionnaire that
the clergy, the school teachers and selected representative parishioners
were askked to fill out, everyone was anxious to know if the
purposes and ideals of a Catholic parish were being sufficiently
fulfilled. As a result of this special self-study and experimental
program, renewed efforts were made to function according to the
concept of a modern parish. This has been a challenge not only
to the clergy and staff, but to the people who make up the community
in which Christ reigns as King.
