Just as the
parish was being founded in 1976, the southern California area
began a boom in population that would continue even to the present
time. A few years before this, Hollywood was completely separate
from the City of Los Angeles and only connected by the old "Red
Car: lines. But b y the late nineteen twenties, as Christ the
King parish became established, the two cities merged into one.,
This was the beginning of what would be characteristic of the
Los Angeles area -- one contiguous city. An element that added
to this growth again was th efinal coming of age of the movies.
Hollywood perfected techniques of movie-making, becoming the
unquestioned capital of the industry, and also drawing thousands
of would-be stars from all over the world. This affected the
parish indirectly in the number of people that would need tghe
care and the services of the Church. Many of these hopeful stars
were Catholics, and there are founding members of the parish
who still remember famous actors and actresses who would take
time from their studio schedule to attend the services at Christ
the King. (Some of them established warm friendships with the
urbane young pastor and contributed to the developing parish.) |
