A Feast for the Ghouls - (http://www.best.com/~rdoering/warning.html): A small collection of war-stories by Randal Doering, set in the fantasy world of Crysoberyl. The tales are written in the form of first-person survivor's accounts, as told to a scholar in the aftermath of the conflict. Doering warns that children should avoid this site due to harsh language and violence. (27 Feb 97)
Feminist Fairy Tales - (http://www.wp.com/dragontree/fftmenu.html): In a site hosted by Dragon Tree Press, Mary Ezzell posts an amusing collection of children's fantasy stories in which maidens and princesses are the heroes rather than the victims. Many of the stories are based on old folk tales. Mary gives educators permission to copy and distribute these stories for classroom activities. (27 Feb 97)
The Fright Site - (http://www.fright.com/): Gothic horror meets cyberpunk in a beautifully crafted web. The Fright Site is now featuring a hypertext serial (still in progress) called E-Leech, about a cadre of hackers who've unwittingly stumbled onto a horrifying secret. Older hypertext pieces include Vampire Moon, an on-line vampire hunt, and Arachnophobia, an interactive adventure in which you are a spider trying not to get killed (and mostly failing) as you search for your mate. In and Out Productions has done an outstanding job with this site. E-Leech in particular is a must see--one of the best serials on the Web. Highly recommended. (13 Oct 97)
Furious Fictions - (http://www.slip.net/~ffiction): This site posts LOTS of very short stories from a variety of authors. Many of the pieces are more like character sketches or a set of evocative images rather than full tales with a beginning, middle, and end--there's some entertaining stuff here, but if you're looking for traditional storytelling, this site will disappoint you. The short-short fiction format, which allows quick downloads and minimal scrolling to read, is well-suited to the WWW venue. (30 May 97)
