| Luffy�s adventure begins in the little Fushchia Village. This is where the pirate crew of Red Hair Shanks made their temporary base while Luffy was just a little kid. It was how Luffy was exposed to the world of pirates and aspired to be one. Some citizens of this town that we are introduced to are Makino, who works in a pub, the town Mayor and a treacherous sea monster. Luffy appeals to Shanks to accept him as a pirate, but Shanks refuses as Luffy is still a kid. In order to prove himself, Luffy stabs himself in the face with a knife, which is what gave him that scar under his left eye. However, Shanks still refuses to let Luffy join his pirate crew. One day, as the pirates were drinking and making merry in Makino's pub, a group of mountain bandits appeared and made fun of the pirates. The leader of the bandits smashed a wine bottle on Shank's head, but Shanks didn't fight back. All the pirates did not retaliate and even laughed at Shanks, which infuriates Luffy. In anger, Luffy eats the Gomu Gomu fruit which Shanks�s crew had found. Alarmed, Shanks tell Luffy that the Devil Fruit will give a human supernatural powers, but the user will never be able to swim again. Luffy is shocked as he realizes that swimming is essential to being a pirate. He discovers that he has acquired the power of rubber, which means he can stretch and expand his body at will, just like rubber. In short, he is now a 'Rubber human'. The next day, Makino rushes to inform the Mayor that Luffy has been captured by the bandits because he had yelled at them for insulting the pirate crew. The Mayor and Makino appeal for Luffy's life to be spared, but the bandits cruelly decline. They then discover that Luffy has the strange ability of stretching himself like rubber and deduce that he has eaten the Devil Fruit. Shanks and his crew then appear and attempt to rescue Luffy, but the leader of the bandits runs away with Luffy and throws him out to sea. A sea monster appeared and gobbled up the bandit, then turned on Luffy. However, as it was about to eat Luffy, Shanks appeared and threathened away the sea monster with a frightful glare. In the process of saving Luffy, Shanks lost an arm. Luffy sobs uncontrollably and Shanks says that it's just an arm compared to Luffy's life. He thanks Luffy for standing up for them to the mountain bandit's insults. On the day of the Red-Hair pirates crew's departure, Shanks bestowed upon Luffy his precious straw hat, and Luffy swore to become an outstanding pirate someday and return the hat.
