Kuroneko Pirates Arc
With Nami as their new navigator, Luffys crew comes to Syrup village to look for a proper pirate ship. This is a quiet little village where Usopp is introduced. Usopp is a liar who uses his lies to arouse the village every morning. He aspires to be a great pirate someday and become a brave warrior on the seas. Usopp thinks that the Straw Hats are pirates who have come to attack the village and he goes to stop them. He is overwhelmed by them, and Zoro says, "These are real pirates standing before you now." The Straw-Hats meet Usopp and Luffy tells Usopp that his father Yasopp is a pirate with the Red-Hair pirate crew. They are also introduced to Usopps pirate gang which consists of Tamanegi (Onion), P-Man and Ninjin (Carrot).

Usopp uses his lies to cheer up
Kaya, a rich girl who is ill and her parents have passed away. She lives in a large mansion on top of a hill. Luffy wants to request a ship from her but Usopp forbids him to do so. He then goes to visit Kaya outside her bedroom window, where he tells her his lies from a tree branch. Her caretaker, Kurahador, despises Usopp and warns Kaya never to see him again. Luffy and gang breaks into the mansion and asks Kaya for a ship. Kurahador appears and insults Usopps father. Usopp gets angry and punches Kurahador, then leaves saying that he will never return to the mansion again.

Luffy goes to sit with an upset Usopp on top of a cliff. There, they accidentally overhear a conversation between Kurahador and
Jango, a hypnosis specialist, and captain of the Kuroneko (black cat) pirates. Kurahador plans to murder Kaya and destroy the village in order to gain Kayas money and possessions. Kurahador is actually Captain Kuro, a notorious pirate known for his intelligence who used to be head of the Kuroneko Pirates. They discover Usopp and Luffy on top of the cliff and Jango uses his hypnosis to cause Luffy to fall from the cliff. Usopp believes Luffy is dead and runs away and tries to warn the village but nobody believes him. He goes to warn Kaya also, but she slaps him and calls him a despicable liar. Everyone trusts Kurahador but nobody believes Usopp. In the tussle, Meri, another caretaker in Kayas house, shoots Usopp. Usopp then leaves and vows to protect the village by himself.

Meanwhile, the Staw Hats discover Luffy lying at the bottom of the cliff. They think he is dead, but as they get closer Zoro hears him snoring. Zoro wakes him up and they go to find Usopp.

Usopp lies to the Usopp Pirate Group that he was just making up stories about Kurahador's plan. He then plots to prevent the pirates from entering the village by himself. Admiring his courage, the Straw-Hat pirates offer to help him.

The next day, Kaya discovers that Meri has been attacked by Kurahador the night before. Luffy and gang await the arrival of the Kuroneko pirates at the slope of the hill. No pirates arrive and they realize they have mistaken the location. They run to the other side of the cliff, but Luffy loses his way and Zoro gets stuck in a pool of oil they had laid out as a trap for the pirates. As a result, Usopp and Nami are the first to arrive at the scene. Usopp takes a beating but refuses to let them enter the village. Just then, Luffy and Zoro finally arrive. They easily defeat the Kuroneko pirates crew, but Jango summons the
Nyabun brothers to defeat them. Luffy falls asleep again under Jangos hypnosis and Zoro has to fight alone. Two of his swords are stolen, and as Nami tries to get them back for him, she is injured by Jango. Kurahador appears and gives them five minutes to destroy the Straw-Hat pirates. Kaya then appears and aims a gun at Kurahador.

Nami is frustrated with Luffy and escapes from Jango. She runs to Luffy and wakes him up by stepping on his face, but Jango throws his blades after her. She falls just as the skim over her head and Luffy wakes up in time to catch them.

Usopps pirate crew then appears and starts beating up Captain Kuro. Usopp is fearful for their lives and orders them to get Kaya to escape to safety. Jango chases after her to assassinate her and Usopp tries to go to her rescue. He can barely stand, so Zoro takes him to save Kaya. Luffy clears the path for them by distracting Captain Kuro. Captain Kuro is angry and demonstrates his strength by killing of his own comrades. Luffy is angry at the way at the way he treats his comrades and yells, "What do you take your comrades as!?" He then defeats Captain Kuro spectacularly.

Meanwhile, Jango is pursuing Kaya relentlessly. Even though the Usopp pirates group set out many booby traps for Jango, he finally manages to catch up to them. He forces Kaya to write her will and proceeds to kill her. Just as he is about to murder her, Zoro and Usopp arrive. Usop defeats Jango with his 'Flaming Star' and Kaya is saved, as well as the entire village.

To show her appreciation, Kaya gives the Straw Hats a ship, Going Merry, which is designed by Meri the caretaker and is fully equipped for a voyage on the ships. Usopp makes up his mind to begin his own journey and disbands the 'Usopp Pirates Group'. He gets ready to set sail, but Luffy invites him to join their crew. Usopp joins the Straw-Hat pirates crew to become a brave warrior of the seas and they set out on their next adventure. The Usopp Pirates Group take over Usopp's daily ritual of arousing the village with his loud lies. Kaya, meanwhile, decides to become a doctor.
