| Buggy Pirates Arc |
| Nami is first introduced here. She is a professional pirate thief who specializes in stealing from pirates. Her dream is to gather one million beris. She is shown to deceive a group of pirates and steals their boat, which bears the flag of the Buggy Pirates crew. She is also depicted as an excllent weather predictor, predicting a storm to hit the deceived pirated just as she sails away on the stolen boat. Luffy and Zoro both have no navigational skills. They're just drifting aimlessly about the seas. Soon, they get hungry, but they have no food. At the exact moment, a bird flies overhead. Luffy decides to catch the bird and eat it, but the bird carries him off instead. In alarm, Zoro chases after him, and encounters the pirates which Nami deceived drifting in the ocean. They hop on board the boat and annouce that they have taken over it, but Zoro beats them up and loses sight of Luffy. The pirates tell him they are part of the Buggy Pirates crew and guides him to the town where the Buggy Pirates are currently terrorizing. Luffy is carried to Orange Village, where the Buggy pirates� crew are. He falls from the sky just as Nami is about to be killed by Buggy�s subordinates for stealing the map of Grand Line. Using, him to her advantage, Nami tricks them into believing that Luffy is her captain and runs away. Luffy defeats them and asks Nami to be their navigator and join the Straw Hat pirates� crew. Nami refuses and lures him into being her bait after she discovers he is a pirate. She uses him to bluff her way into the Buggy pirate crew by tying him up and claiming that he is the thief. She returns the map to Buggy and claims that she is sick of Luffy, her 'captain'. Luffy is locked in a cage and the Buggy pirates celebrate Nami's joining the crew. To prove her loyalty, Buggy orders her to fire the Buggy cannon (a powerful cannon that destroys towns) at Luffy. Nami hesitates and one of Buggy�s henchmen lights the cannon instead. In order to save Luffy, Nami grabs the light and burns her hands. As the crew are about to attack her, Zoro appears and rescues her. Buggy then reveals his powers of the devil fruit, which enables his body to separate. (Bara-bara) He stabs Zoro but Luffy gets Zoro to shoot the Buggy cannon back at the pirates, thus enabling them to escape, with Zoro carrying Luffy's cage on his back.. They then encounter Shu Shu, a dog guarding a pet food store that his deceased owner used to run. Shu Shu refuses to budge from guarding the store, no matter what. The mayor of the town then appears and takes Zoro away to treat his wounds. Along comes Mohji, the King of Beasts and his pet lion, Richie. They destroy the cage Luffy was trapped in, and hits him away, then sets the pet food store on fire. Shu Shu is injured by Richie while trying to protect the store, but to no avail. Luffy is extremely angry to see Shu Shu�s treasure destroyed and he goes to defeat Mohji. The only remains of the shop he manages to retrieve is an empty box of pet food. He gives this to Shu Shu. Touched by Luffy's spirit, the mayor wants to protect his town and its citizens. He goes to attack Buggy, but Luffy knocks him out in order to save his life. Nami runs off to steal Buggy's treasure. Buggy summons Kabajie, his assistant to attack them, and Zoro becomes his opponent. After an exhausting fight, Zoro wins and goes to sleep. Luffy takes on Buggy and Buggy reveals his relationship with Shanks. He then destroys Luffy�s hat, then discovers Nami stealing his treasure. He goes to attack her, but Luffy saves her. Angry, Luffy then defeats the Buggy pirate crew. Nami agrees to join the Straw hat pirates, but refuses to become a pirate herself, insisting that she is only working alongside them. The people of the town are angry that their Mayor is hurt and gives chase to Luffy and his gang. Shu Shu appears and protects them, enabling Luffy and his crew to escape safely. The Straw hat pirates are then off on their next adventure with a new Navigator. |
