| Luffy is excited about Going Merry's cannon. He tests it's shooting power on a rock not far off. Later, they encounter Yosakk and Johnny, who used to be partners with Zoro. Johnny is suffering from scurvy, and Yosakk had placed him to rest on the rock when Luffy fired the cannon at it, and injured them. Nami quickly treats Johnny's illness. They realize how important nutrition is on the seas. The Straw Hat pirates decide that the next member of their crew should be a chef. Yosakk and Johnny tell the pirates about Baratie, a floating restaurant on the sea where people can go to have something to eat. On the way, they encounter Lieutenant Fullbody of the Marines. He shoots at Luffy's ship, but Luffy deflects is and ends up blasting the cannon at Baratie instead. Here we are introduced to Sanji, who works as a vice-chef in the restaurant. Sanji is a very skillful cook but he is also a troublemaker at the restaurant due to his flirting and disregard for rules. He publicly humiliates Lieutenant Fullbody, who is dining at the restaurant. Fullbody then purposely pops a bug into Sanji's soup and accuses the restaurant of being unhygienic. Sanji gets angry when he throws the soup on the floor, as it is a waste of food. He then beats up Fullbody. The boss of Baratie is Zeff, a one-legged cook who was once a pirate. Luffy accidentally injured Zeff when he deflected the cannon. He apologizes, but Zeff makes him work there for one year in order to pay for the damages. All of a sudden, a member of Don Kreig�s, (the strongest pirate crew in East Blue) pirate crew, who is injured and very hungry comes into the restaurant and asks for food. His name is Gin. Pattie, another chef there kicks him out, but Sanji secretly gives him a plate of fried rice, with the view that anyone who is hungry is welcome to eat. The pirate is very grateful and cries into the food. Luffy sees this and likes Sanji. He immediately asks him to join their crew as a cook. Sanji refuses. We are also shown Sanji�s history and his relationship with One-Legged Zeff. (For an in-depth look into this, go to Sanji�s character shrine.) Sanji meets the Straw Hats as they are dining in the restaurant. He is immediately mesmerized by Nami's beauty and flirts with her (to which Zoro has a rather interesting reaction). Zeff tells Sanji to join the pirates, but he refuses. Don Kreig returns to the restaurant and asks for food. He is refused by all the chefs, but Sanji stubbornly cooks him some food and gives it to him. All the chefs are angry with Sanji's actions. Don Kreig recovers and hits Sanji. He demands that he will take Baratie and the cooks should prepare food to feed his entire crew. They decline, but Zeff appears with food for 100 people. Don Kreig leaves to feed his crew. Gin apologized to Sanji for Don Kreig's actions. He had promised to leave immediately after eating, but Gin had no idea he would do this. Apparently their ships have all been destroyed and the main ship left in tatters after entering the Grand Line. Gin claims that a single man destroyed Don Kreig's entire fleet of 50 ships. This man is 'Eagle Eye' Mihawk. He is the man Zoro has been looking for, also the number 1. swordsman in the world, which is Zoro's goal. Suddenly, Don Kreig's main ship is cut into pieces. Mihawk has come to East Blue to hunt down Don Kreig's fleet to kill time. In the meantime, Nami discovers some bounty papers in the hands of Johnny and Yosakk. She suddenly kicks them off the ship and steals the ship away.attempts to destroy it. Yosakk and Johnny rush to tell Luffy. They are alarmed at this news and Luffy insists that Nami is not a bad person. He wants her as their navigator, no one else. Usopp and Zoro are sent to get her back, but Zoro first insists for a duel with Mihawk. After a courageous fight on Zoro's part, Mihawk wins, but restrains from killing Zoro, instead, telling him to become stronger and someday defeat him. He leaves East Blue without killing Don Kreig. The chefs try to protect Baratie from Don Kreig but fail. They then detach part of the restaurant for the battle to take place. Sanji fights with one of Don Kreig's powerful men, 'Iron Wall' Pearl. His dream of someday finding the legendary ocean, 'All Blue' is also revealed. For more information, visit Sanji's character shrine. Gin takes Zeff hostage and insists that they surrender Baratie. However, his guilt overtakes him and he challenges Sanji to a fight. Sanji is already tired from fighting Pearl, and Gin is about to kill him when he finds that he is unable to do so, and begins crying. Don Kreig fires his poisonous gas cannon at Baratie and Gin sacrifices himself to give his gas mask to Sanji so that Sanji and Luffy can live. Luffy is angry and defeats Don Kreig in an intense battle.. The cooks celebrate their victory, but they all pretend to be mean to Sanji and chase him away from Baratie. The reason is so he can pursue his dreams of finding 'All Blue' and leave with the Straw Hats. Sanji discovers their plan and decides to leave of his own free will. In what is one of the most touching scenes in the series, Sanji bids farewell to Baratie and sets off as the fifth member of the Straw Hat Pirates crew in search of their dreams. |
