Captain Morgan Arc
Luffy sets out on his adventure. He is now 17 and is ready to hit the seas. He starts out on a little boat, but his boat is eaten up by a whirlpool and he saves himself by sleeping in a wine barrel. The wine barrel is picked up by a pirate ship the pirate crew of Iron Mace Alvida. She is an evil female pirate who is obsessed with being the most beautiful female pirate in the world. Coby is a young, bespectacled boy who works on her ship running errands. His dream is to become a marine, but he got picked up by Alvida and forced to be her servant instead. In the chaos, he meets Luffy who bursts out of the wine barrel. Coby asks Luffy what he is sailing for, and Luffy replies that he wants to become the Pirate King. ('Kaizoku-ou!') Coby insists that it is impossible, but Luffy's determination is extremely firm. Seeing this, Coby is inspired to achieve his own dream too. Alvida overhears this and gets angry. She mistakes Luffy for a famous bounty hunter, Roronoa Zoro and attempts to get rid of him. Luffy then proceeds to defeat Alvida for Coby and together they sail to Shelltown, which is also where the Marine Base is. He wonders about Roronoa Zoro and thinks that he would like Zoro to join him if he is a good person.

In town, they hear news about the fearsome pirate hunter
Roronoa Zoro who is being held captive by the marines, and also of Captain Morgan, the commander of the marines in the area. Luffy is curious about Zoro and heads to the base to sneak a look despite Coby's anxious protestions. When they look over the wall, they see a figure or a man with a green waistband, in the middle of a large compund. He is bounded by thick ropes and looks pretty much lifeless. This man is the pirate hunter, Roronoa Zoro.

As they spot Zoro, a small girl suddenly appears and sneaks over the wall to deliver some rice balls (onigiri) to Roronoa Zoro. Coby fears for her safety, but as she approaches Zoro, Captain Morgans son, Helmeppel, appears and accuses her of helping the captive. He throws her rice balls on the ground and stamps maliciously on them. He then orders her to be flung out of the compound, but Luffy manages to catch her before she falls. When the marines leave, Luffy speaks to Zoro and he eats the rice balls that have been dirtied on the floor. Luffy is pleased with this, and Zoro tells him that he has a deal with Helmeppel. If he manages to stay alive for one month, he will be set free. Luffy leaves the compound with Coby and they later learn from the girl (
Rika) that Zoro was being held captive in order to save her and her mother from Helmeppel. This is due to an incident that happened a while back involving Helmeppel
s pet wolf. It tried to attack Rika, but Zoro intervened and saved her, killing the wolf in the process. Helmeppel was angry and threathened to kill Rika and her mother. He offered the deal to Zoro to save them and Zoro agreed.

Later, Luffy overheard Helmeppel planning to execute Zoro tomorrow and he gets angry. He punches Helmeppel out of his anger and decides to make Zoro his first crewmate. (Nakama)

He goes to rescue Zoro but Helmeppel has asked his father, Captain Morgan, to kill Luffy. Zoros dream is to be the number one swordsman in the world, (for a more in-depth look at Zoros past, go to Zoros character shrine) and he agrees to be a pirate with Luffy on condition he retrieves his swords for him. Luffy proceeds to get back the swords and encounters a run-in with Captain Morgan on the way, breaking his statue. He then takes Helmeppel hostage and runs away with him to find Zoro's swords. Meanwhile, Coby attempts to untie the ropes binding Zoro but Captain Morgan appears and shoots at them. Luffy jumps down just in time and blocks the bullets with his Gomu Gomu technique. He returns Zoro's swords and the both of them then proceed to defeat Captain Morgan and the marines.

We also discover Zoro's past and the reason why he wants to become the number one swordsman in the world. For an in-depth look at his past, please visit Zoro's character shrine.

After the town is saved, the marines ask Luffy to leave the town as they cannot harbour a pirate, being a marine town. Luffy pretends to fight with Coby to prove that they are not friends. Coby joins the marines and Luffy & Zoro leave on the ship, sent off with an honorary salute from the marines. With that, Luffy has had his first adventure and has gained his first companion.
