Luke Skywalker has been shaped by tragedy throughout his life. He has been orphan no less than three times. The first time was when his uncle Owen and Aunt Beru were killed on Tatooine by Imperial stromtroopers. The second time was when Obi-Wan Kenobi was struck down by Darth Vader and the third time was when his father became one with the force.
He also experienced tragedy from the other side. He has seen his students from Kyp Durron to Brakiss to Krueller, fall to the dark side. He has seen his nephew Anakin Solo die at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong.
Luke was born at the end of the Clone Wars when Emperor Palpatine took over. His mom was the former Queen and present Senator from Naboo, Padme Amidala. His father was Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. He was spirited away to Tatooine to live with his Aunt and Uncle by Obi-Wan Kenobi after he was born to hide him from his father, who had turned to the dark side of the force and the Emperor. Obi-Wan watched over Luke while he grew up. He was brought up to believe his father was just an ordinary run of the mill navigator aboard a spice freighter. This was a lie concocted by his Uncle Owen so he would not go off to seek the truth. Luke however inherited his father's restless streak and his innate Jedi skills. Instead of podracers like his father he flew skyhoppers through the zigzags of Beggars Canyon at white knuckled speeds.
He was easily excitable and immature causing his friends to show little respect for him. They called him Wormie. As the years passed his friends began to leave Tatooine for the Imperial Academy. The biggest friend was Biggs Darklighter. This meant "one more season" on the farm.
Adventure finally founds its way to Luke and it also brought a harsh lesson with it. Two droids C3P0 and R2D2 came into his care. R2D2 was carrying a message for Obi-Wan. He ran away from the Lars farm after he convinced Luke to remove his restraining bolt. After a confrontation with some Tusken Raiders, he found himself in the company of Obi-Wan. There he heard more about his father from Obi-Wan and he learned his father was a great Jedi. As he was taking Obi-Wan to Mos Eisley, they came across a destroyed sandcrawler and dead Jawas. Luke realized that they were the same Jawas that sold the droids to the Lars. He raced to his home only to find that stromtroopers had killed his guardians. With nothing left he wanted to learn how to use the force. In Mos Eisley the hired Han Solo and Chewbacca to take them to Alderaan to bring the droid back to Princess Leia who unknown to Luke is his twin sister.
When they arrived at Alderaan they found it was destroyed and in the place was the Death Star. they were captured and learned the Princess was there. as Obi-Wan turned the tractor beam off Han, Chewbacca and Luke rescued the Princess. He saw Obi-Wan killed by Darth Vader. In the battle that followed at Gavin 4 he saw the death of his friend Biggs Darklighter. He destroyed the Death Star and became a hero to the Rebel Alliance.
At first Luke worked harder to be a pilot than a Jedi. With fellow pilot Wedge Antilles he founded Rouge Squadron. He also found time for other missions like slipping through the Imperial blockade of Gavin 4 and confronting Darth Vader on Jazbina, risking his life aboard the Wheel gambling station, and in the process he discovered the ice planet Hoth.
Luke was prompted to Commander after he helped the Rebel Alliance evacuate Yavin 4. Before the promotion was Logged General Dodonna was captured during the evacuation. While the fleet hopped across the galaxy, Luke volunteered for missions to worlds such as Mimbian, where he and Leia faced Darth Vader unusual help from Obi-Wan's spirit. Obi-Wan actually possessed Luke's body during one such duel.
Luke helped roll out the B-Wing fighter with pilot Keya Farlander. Luke eventually gave control of Rouge Squadron to Wedge.
Using Hoth as a base Luke helped explore the planet and set sensors out. during one such sensor run he was attacked by a Wompa. after killing the Wompa Luke stumbled in the frozen wasteland and saw the force image of Obi-Wan and was told to seek out Yoda on the planet Dagabah. Han rescued him and soon was battling AT-AT's as he helped cover Echo Base's evacuation.
He flew to Dagabah and met with Yoda who continued his Jedi training. While he was in training her had a vision of the future. Han and Leia were in trouble. Yoda and even Obi-Wan warned him not to go but he went anyway. He traveled to Bespin where he confronted Darth Vader and during the duel Vader cut off his hand. Vader also told him that he was his father and asked him to join him and they would overthrow the Emperor together. Luke refused by letting himself fall down a shaft and he ended on a antenna outside the Cloud City. Leia, Chewbacca, and Lando rescued him.
After he got a prosthetic hand to replace is real hand that Vader had cut off he threw himself back into the Alliance's services. He flew many missions with many Rebel pilots and was almost court-martialed when he appeared to killed Shira Brie, who was a double agent, in a dog fight. He once again flew with Rouge Squadron at the battle of Gall and infiltrated Prince Xizor's castle and rescued Princess Leia. Later, he was captured by the Empire while on a diplomatic mission to Abridon. Luke managed to escape with the help of a Imperial traitor named Brenn Tantor.
He made his way back to Tatooine to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt. He had built a new lightsaber and thought he was a Jedi Knight. He traveled back to Dagabah and continued his training. Yoda told him that his training was complete Luke said he was a Jedi. Yoda replied not yet. He must confront Vader again. At that moment Luke turned back from that path and told the Emperor that he would not join him. The Emperor forgot all the rest of what was happening and shot blue lightning out of his fingers to kill Luke. Luke pleased with his father to help him and finally Vader turned on the Emperor and threw him down a power ventilation shaft. With that Luke pulled his dying father to a shuttle. Vader told Luke to help take his mask off so " he could look upon Luke with his own eyes one time." He told Luke to tell his sister he was right about him. Then Anakin died. Luke burned the shell of his Fathers body on Endor. when he was reunited with his friends he saw the spirits of Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Yoda. Luke was now a Jedi Knight.
He also felt so alone but could not contemplate this as Obi-Wan appeared once more and told him to stop the Ssi-ruuk invasion at Bakura. Luke led the task force to Bakura. There he helped defeat the Ssi-ruuk. He also found another person strong in the force. His name was Dev Sibwarra. He died during the fighting. Luke later trained an Iskalonian named Kiro , who eventually left the Jedi ways to lead his naive people.
Luke soon realized he maybe able to bring back he Jedi Order, if he could locate other force sensitive individuals and train them in the use of the force. He officially resigned from Rouge Squadron after a mission on Tandankin, vowing to spend more time learning the ways of the Jedi. However the New Republic was not going to let Luke go easily. One year after the Battle of Endor he as promoted to general. Then a brutal campaign to free the Inner Rim from Lord Shadowspawn followed and Luke watched thousands of his soldiers die. He was convinced this was not the way of the Jedi and he resigned from the military altogether.
He searched out apprentices. He was turned down by Kyle Katran and one of Rouge Squadrons' own pilots Corran Horn. During this time he met Mara Jade during the Thrawn campaign and had adventures with the witches of Dathomir. 0ara was a former assassin of the Emperor called the Emperors Hand. Like the others that turned Luke down Mara wasn't ready for the training. She hated Luke and wanted him dead for a time.
Six years after Endor the Emperor's clone appeared and it seemed like Luke would turn to the Dark side but Luke had decided to battle the dark side from within. On Byss Luke bowed before the clone of the Emperor and said " My father's destiny is my own." He endured many horrors on Byss including a replacement of his prosthetic hand with a duplicate. He eventually fell far into the dark side and it took the strength of his sister Leia to pull him back along with help of another Jedi -Empato-jayos Brand to banish Palpatine's spirit forever.
After he endured a crucible, Luke had become a Jedi Master but realized he had no older Jedi to rely on as Obi-Wan's spirit had passed on. He went before the New Republic asking permission to start a Jedi academy. He was granted permission and used having as the site of the academy.
Luke chose Yavin 4 for his academy in part because he found an ancient Jedi structure on the world earlier. What Luke didn't realize was that this was the site of where Exar Kun base of operations and trapped within the walls was the dark spirit of Exar Kun himself. Exar Kun eventually possessed a student and killed him then possessed another. Luke was soon put out of commission but wasn't dead. it took the rest of the Jedi trainees to banish Exar Kun's spirit.
Luke had some of his students fail in their training but after a year several of his first trainees graduated.
Luke tried to make time for a personal life, but demands on his time were to great. During the Eye of Palpitine crisis he met Callista who was a Jedi Knight before the Empire. They fell in love but when Callista lost her connection with the force, she chose to find her way back to the force on her own and left Luke. He met a second person named Akanah during the Black Fleet crisis, but Luke learned that she was manipulating him and he broke their relationship off.
During the Hand of Thrawn incident He found his true love in he person of Mara Jade. Despite have tried to kill Luke once she agreed to marry him. Thy had two wedding ceremonies back on Coruscant. One was a Jedi service and the other a public one which was nearly disrupted by Imperial agitators.
Mara didn't share in Luke's devotion to the Jedi an spent a lot of time on New Republic missions, while Luke taught his Jedi hopeful. Soon the ranks of his students included his niece and nephews Jacana, Jaina, and Anakin. They were the children of Han and Leia Solo. and by Chewbacca's nephew Lowbacca.
Twenty years after Endor the Jedi numbered approximately one hundred Knights and Masters. He petitioned the New Republic to reestablish the Jedi Council but soon it and Luke had more on their minds.
The invasion of the Yuuzhan Vong, who were seemingly outside the force plowed through the New Republic and decimated the Jedi. Luke was forced to fight simultaneously on three fronts. One against the Yuuzhan Vong, one against the New Republic citizens and one against the Jedi Order itself. The first front is easy the second was that the Yuuzhan Vong. The second front became about by the Yuuzhan Vong stating if the New Republic turned the Jedi over to them. This got the citizens viewing the Jedi with suspicion and fear. the third front of the Jedi themselves was on how to fight the war. One faction led by Kyp Durron wanted to aggressively attack the Vong but others wanted to try another approach. In the midst of this and the war Luke and Mara had a child who they named Ben after Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Luke has long held the opinion that it was destiny to bring back the Jedi. Palpatine, the Warlords of the Empire could not stop him but his triumphs came very close to being torn from him during the war with the Yuuzhan Vong. He held the Jedi together during this time and now finds himself trying to hold them together again in the Dark Nest crisis.
