When Luke Skywalker was caught out in a Hoth blizzard he saw a vision of Obi Wan Kenobi and the vision told him to go to the Dagobah system to learn from a Jedi Master who had instructed him.
Dagobah, which is in the middle of the Sluis system, is a world of murky swamps, steaming bayous, and petrified granite forests. Life on Dagobah includes the fascinating Gnarltree. Gnarltrees start out as a ubiquitous white spider, which are the tree's seedlings. These spiders will roam the swamps of the planet til it is time to root and then they become an adult Gnarltree.
Gnarltrees have dense branches and roots that house butcherbug colonies, nightbat nests and packs of lazy spotlight sloths. Some more lethal creatures live beneath the canopies include swampslugs, dragonsnakes, and carnivorous fungus.
This world became home to Yoda after the Clone Wars as he hid from the Empire. Yoda lived in a primitive mud-walled hut and demanded little of his surroundings. Yoda spent long days walking gathering up edible roots to make rootleaf stew. and meditating in the force.
After the defeat at Hoth Luke Skywalker found his way to Dagobah. He crashed his X-Wing into a watery peat bog. Luke became frustrated and angry at what he deemed absurd. It was at the peak of his frustration and anger that Yoda appeared. Luke was ill prepared for this little green, meddlesome, exasperating gnome who had begun to poke through his supplies.. This was Yoda's way of testing Luke for his tolerance and disconcertment. Needless to say Luke failed miserably.
Luke's stubborn impatience would be Luke's greatest challenge throughout his time and training with Yoda. During one such trail Luke insisted in taking his weapons and he faced a nightmare vision of himself beneath the black mask of Darth Vader in the bowels of the darkside cave. Yoda also showed Luke why he was having trouble lifting heavy objects when Luke's X-wing sank in the bog. Luke couldn't lift it and said it was impossible. Yoda then waited a moment then he lifted the X-wing. When he set it down Luke replied he replied to Luke "That is why you fail".
Luke abandon his training after he had a vision that Han, Leia and Chewbacca were in danger despite Yoda's warning that he had much more to learn. After a near fatal encounter with his father Darth Vader Luke returned to Dagobah. Yoda now was 900 years old and he was dying. Luke confronted Yoda about Vader being his father and Yoda said yes and also told him there was another Skywalker. The Yoda dies and became one with the force.
Luke would return to the planet several more times: once during the bitter war with Grand Admiral Thrawn and again three years later when in the hope he could restore his love Callista's lost connection to the force. Through the years Yoda's hut has been obliterated by years of rainstorms and spreading swampland. Dagobah still remains a thriving planet of life and a potent center of the force
