Alderaan was famous as a world of unspoiled beauty and a center of art , culture, and education. The first colonist built their cites into canyon crevasses, beneath the polar ice, and on stilts in the shallow saline seas. The didn't pave their new home in ferrocrete as they thought one Coruscant was enough for them.
The rolling plains and gentle breezes drew some of the greatest artist and philosophers to the planet. The Castle lands inspires some while others were inspired by the vast endless fields of grass.
Alderann was once ruled by a royal family but became a democracy but kept the royal family: The House Organa. The Organa's , who ruled from the capital city Aldera, took an active role in the Old Republic government and helped oversee the demilitarization of their planet after the bloody Clone Wars.
It was just after the Clone Wars that Bail Organa and his wife took on the duty of parents to Leia Skywalker. They adopted the baby Leia and gave her their last name so her father would not know of her existence. When Leia was grownup she helped Bail who by now had become one of the founding members in the Rebel alliance.
During on mission for the Alliance she was captured over the planet of Tatooine by her real father Darth Vader. She was brought aboard the Death Star where she unwittingly chose the target for the battle Stations first test. Grand Moff Tarkin wanted to send a message to all the other free thinking worlds and also crush the rebellion for good.
Tarkin brought Princess Leia up to the control center and asked her to tell him where the rebel base was she said it was on Dantooine after thinking she could save her planet from destruction. Tarkin ordered Alderann destroyed anyway. The Death Star fired its weapon and obliterated the planet.
Instead of bringing the other planets in line and crushing the Rebellion as Tarkin had planned the callous murder of billions of people struck anger not fear into the galaxy. New faces began to flock to the Rebel Alliance when they saw the Empires true face.
Imperial spokespeople tried to put their best spin on the story initially claiming that Alderaan had destroyed itself with a titanic internal detonations. A pirated copy of the Death Star blowing the planet surfaced forcing the Empire to say that they had to do it to prevent Bail Organa from releasing his biowar virus. Only the very staunchest imperial loyalist believed the story.
All that is left of the planet is a ring of drifting rock from the planet. The citizens of Alderaan that were off planet make pilgrimages to what is called the Graveyard to leave flowers, poems, and mementos of their loved ones. The survivors also are determine that no one will forget what happened to their planet so that it won't happen again.
