Coruscant has been called the Hub, The Capital, The Scintillant Planet, The Fountainhead of Humanity, Coordinates Zero-Zero-Zero. Since he dawn of interstellar history Coruscant has been the undisputed center of power, law, authority, history, and culture. The planet lies beneath a cloud of space traffic, orbital mirrors. This glistening planet resembles a grooved metal ball. for over a thousand years the planet has been developed both industrially and high-tech habitation has seen every square inch of the planets surface covered by a sprawling cityscape several kilometers deep. Billions of people live layer upon layer in the ferrocrete maze of buildings. The well to do live in the upper levels in luxurious top level penthouses or tethered satellites called skyhooks.
While the power and wealth resides on the upper levels the lower levels became abandon to darkness and disrepair. This gloomy undercity is strewn with seedy taverns and wrecked equipment. In the shadows live Granite Slugs, Corridor Ghouls and shambling mutated subhumans.
The very essence of Coruscant is Imperial City. This city was built over top of an eons old battlefield between the ancient Taunga and the Battalions of Zhells. This metropolis is the shining glory on a planet filled with wonders. The Galactic Museum and Monument Plaza are marvelous attraction in their own rights but the Imperial Palace dominates the city.
The palace is a gray-green pyramid just north of the Manaral Mountains. The immense Imperial Palace houses government offices, Emperor Palpatine's throne room, and the breathtaking Grand Corridor with its double lines of greenish-purple ch'hala trees. Some distance away lies the artificial Western Sea and the walled off alien district called invisec.
The planet was renamed Imperial Center temporarily and was the dark heart of Palpatine's evil rule. For many years the Rebel Alliance avoided the heavily fortified capital out of necessity. Soon after the Battle of Hoth, Princess Leia and her companions were able to infiltrate the Prince Xizor's opulent castle and destroyed it.
Several years after Endor the Rebel Alliance succeeded in capturing the planet from the forces of Ysanne Isard. Unknown to the Alliance was The Isard had released the deadly Krytos plaque on the alien population. This was designed to turn the alien population against the humans and humanoid species of the Alliance. This tainted the victory by the Alliance. They held Coruscant for three years, until a cloned Emperor Palpatine surfaced (taking advantage of Thrawn's recent gains) forced the New Republic to retreat to Da Soocha IV. The New Republic drove the Imperials back out in a year but left the planet devastated. .
The New Republic rebuilt the planet and it became a symbol of the New Republic 's perseverance and determination. Coruscant recently changed hands again at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong. The Vong changed the planet to be a more biological construction but eventually the planet retaken.
