Tatooine was once described in the following way " If there is a bright spot in the universe, you're on the planet furthest from it." This was once true but now it is know as the homeworld of Luke Skywalker, the resting place of Jabba the Hutt. It is also where Anakin Skywalker was found as a slave. Although the planet would probably not like to be know as the homeworld of Darth Vader.
Despite the planet's notoriety the planet is still has a miserable climate. With its twin suns baking the surface, and constant droughts and bone-scouring sandstorms it might be a nice place to visit but no place to live.
The exception to this is the two indigenous species the Sand People (Tusken Raiders) and the Jawas. Both races led their lives heavily wraps and dust cloaks. They are very different from each other as the sand people are an enigmatic barbarian warriors who live in close knit clans and with their Bantha mounts live a nomadic life. They are brave enough to hunt the Krayt Dragon, which can devour a Ronto in three bites.
In contrast the Jawas are a short cowardly yellow skinned scavengers who travel the vast deserts in gigantic sandcrawlers. The Jawas scavenge abandon machinery despite the condition of the machinery. It is often repaired with generous amount of engine tape and hot spit. The only thing they enjoy more than tinkering with machinery is haggling with a gullible rancher the price of a rebuilt machine and probably a defective one at that.
It was on this world that Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi found a 10 year old Anakin Skywalker and his Mom, slave to a junk dealer named Wattoo. Wattoo lost Anakin in a bet with Qui-Gon on a pod race Anakin entered. Anakin was strong in the force and Qui-Gon took him to C3PO to be brought to the Jedi Council. Later after Anakin had turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader, Obi-Wan brought Anakin's son Luke to live with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. Owen was Anakin's step brother as Owen's father Clegg Lars freed Shimi Skywalker and married her. Luke was sheltered from the truth about his father. Obi-Wan stayed on Tatooine to watch over Luke in case Darth Vader learned of his sons whereabouts. Obi-Wan lived in the Jundland wastes.
Luke was restless living on Tatooine and often dreamed of far off adventures while harvesting crops and racing skyhoppers through Beggars Canyon. Then one fateful day his Uncle purchased C3P0 and R2D2 from some Jawas.
In a whirlwind of events Luke saw the death of his guardians and helped rescue a princess and become a fighter pilot who destroyed the Death Star. He had no reason to believe he would be coming back to the planet.
Now another well known resident of the planet was Jabba the Hutt. He was a galactic gangster and had an old score to settle with Han Solo. He had Han who had been frozen in carbonite by Boba Fett the bounty hunter delivered to his palace where Luke and his friends rescued Han and killed Jabba above the Sarlacc pit. Luke returned again over eight years later investigating another Hutt scheme. They found the palace quiet but found the information they had come to find.
