Our Own Book Reviews and Poems (2004-05)

Sometimes we read a poem which has a profond effect on us. This is such a poem, written and given to the website by a gifted and special child . It shows deep and meaningful insight into the human condition. He was in sixth class when he composed these lines and we can only hope that his unique and wonderful talent is encouraged to grow in the years ahead.

AS I WATCHED

I stood on the cliff and watched a single rock.

Upon it stood a lone gannet .

I watched it for a moment

Then as swift a lightning he darted

Up as far as the eye could see

Then with a slight movement he plunged into the depths of the ocean.

The fish desperately trying to lodge this great predator

But futile was their effort

He scooped up a mouth full of fish.

The oil slick to help his body move gracefully through the water.

He returns to his nest to his mate with a meal for his chicks .

He called towards me .

As though he was trying to speak to me in some mystical language

he turned

Another male had approached his nest

He out spread his dazzling wing and chases of is rival.

It becomes dark

He fades into the night

And I still stand there ………………………..watching.

Weaving

On the 5th and 6th of October 2004. We had a weaving specialist in our school. The name of the specialist was Ms Ger O'Sullivan from Ennis in Co. Clare. She brought wool, Spinning wheels, Carders and drop Spindles. She also brought charts about the history of weaving. She will be coming again to our school. Her future plans are to do some tie dying. The days she was here were not all about weaving we also did some carding and spinning. For the weaving we used boxes, timber and books as looms. We had very creative patterning and colours. We had some feathers and straws. The days she came were fun and I got experiences from them.

Ger O' Sullivans Visit

Gers visit was really fun. We did loads of things like weaving, cording and drop Spindling. Ger is a cultural heritage specialist. The wool we used was really smelly because it was straight from the sheep. She also brought in four big cards about different wool and sheep. We also made samplers out of weaving wool together and we made different patterns and shapes. We can't wait for Ger to come again it was a great experience and fun. We found a song that relates to all of this it's called The Spinning Wheel. We used stuff like feathers, wool and made hangings and creative patterns. I went on the Spinning Wheel it was really good the wool was really oily. I never knew that you could make a ball of wool from a spindle. I was really glad that she came. She came all the way from Ennis in Co. Clare. I had lots of fun and I think a lot of people did.

8th October 2004

We had a person called Ger O'Sullivan in our school the other day. She is a weaving Specialist. This week we did stuff with sheeps wool. She showed us how to use a spinning wheel, drop spindles, and carders. We had great fun in fact I think the whole class did. She still has to come three more days. We made a song for her when she comes back. It is callled The Spinning Wheel. I never thought sheeps wool could be used for spinning.

Final Draft Weaving

Ms. O' Sullivan is visiting us for 5 days but she has already came for 2 days, she is a Cultural Heritage Specialist. She does weaving and has lots of gadgets. She has this song called The Spinning Wheel It is very good. When she visited us for the first time I was weaving carding and doing drop spindling. It is not that easy the string kept breaking. On the second day she came it was pretty much the same but we made these cool samplers they are very nice and I have feathers in my one they are cool as well. When I was cording wool I got scraped it was very tough when there was very little on the carder.

My own personal experience. I never new you could make jumpers and T-Shirts. I thought you would need big machines and science.

Weaving

When Ms. Ger O'Sullivan came I did not know what we would be doing. Ger told us about weaving and the history of weaving . I loved the wheel and the drop Spindles. Carding was cool because you put the wool on to one carder and then went over and back. Ger brought sheeps wool it was very smelly.. Some of it was soft and some was hard then Ms. Ger O'Sullivan emptied out a big bag of wool. It was big. The best part was the wheel because it went so fast.

The day before yesterday this lady called Ms. Ger O'Sullivan came to our school She came to help us with our weaving. She thought me how to weave and I was able to spin the wheel and she thought me how to card and I never never knew how to weave. I never knew that I could make a braclet out of Wool.

Weaving

Ms. Ger O' Sullivan came to our school on Tuesday and Wednesday. She showed us the Spinning Wheel. The sheeps wool was very smelly . She did carding with the sheeps wool. Then she put the wool on the Spinning Wheel and made it into loom. We had great fun using the spinning wheel. Then she showed us how to weave. We made lovely patterns. We also did the drop spindles with the wool. We hung our designs on the board. We are looking forward to Ger coming again.

My Experience

The Carding The smelly sheeps wool The weaving The Drop Spindles

Ms. Ger O'Sullivan from Ennis is A Heritage Specialist. On Tuesday 6th October we first started to do the Drop Spindles. I thought it was fun. Ger told me how to do it. I think that Ger could do the best. Then we did the Spinning Wheel. I saw how Ger did it. I went and did the Drop Spindles.

I now know how to weave because Ms. O'Sullivan showed me how to weave. She showed us how to work the spinning Wheel. The wool came from the Sheep and it was smeelly. The Drop Spindle's were cool I had a go of them. The carding is to make the wool nice and clean and soft. Ger brought pictures of the old people doing the drop spindle of the balken. The old man was doing the weaving with the spinning wheel. Ms. O'Sullivan came from Ennis in Co. Clare. We used feathers for the weaving and patterns five. I didn't know that you would have to card the wool. I never used the spinning wheel before, or card before or drop spindle before.

Experience

It was cool. I hope she comes again I hope we make more cool things. I loved it . It was great. I hope we do better things the next time.

Ms. O'Sullivan was very kind to us. We learned how to weave. She told us the history of weaving, Drop spindles and carding. Weaving is when you spin the wool. First you have to sheer the sheep then you must card the wool and then you can start weaving the wool into balls. Carding is like two brosh roding together to brosh the wool and make it smooth. You can use a drop spindle or a wheel, before the wheel was invented the weavers had to use a drop spindle it got very tiring . We did all this plus our own patterns. I learnt a lot and did a lot in only two days. She was very creative and artistic. I really enjoyed it and there are another three days to go. I expect that they will be as good as these two. The thing that I was so excited about was you could make such a detailed ball of wool out of a sheep fleece. I learned a lot and will know even more it is cool.

Hi. My name is XXXX and I am going to tell you about Weaving. We had a lady called Ms. O'Sullivan. She was a weaving Specialist. She thought us how to weave. At first I was not very good but U started to get good then and then U had a Go on the spinning wheel and when my turn was up my hands were very smelly. Ger had feathers and we made creative things like patterns hanging things out of wool straws. I am never going to forget it. I can't wait for Ger to come back. I don not care if my hands are smelly next time.

On Tuesday Ms. O'Sullivan from Ennis in Co. Clare came to our school. She came to show us how to weave. She is good at weaving. She brought a lot of stuff, she had two spinning wheels, we started off with Drop Spindles. She had a load of wool, it smells. A few days back Ms. DiFusco showed us a bit of weaving she is good at it. I made a book mark. Ms. O'Sullivan showed us the same thing expect with wool. Ms DiFusco used paper. Then we all had a go on the spinning wheel it was fun. Then we made bracelets I made one. Then she went into the other classroom to show them how to weave. They made the same things.

Ger. O'Sullivan came to our school on the 5th and 6th October and we did a lot of weaving. The whole room was messy. The best bit of weaving was carding the wool, there was a lot of different kind of wool. My favorite wool was the Jack Owensworth Wool. The Jack Owensworth wool was brown, black and white. I has two goes on the spinning wheel it is really good because you can make bracelets and brades. The drop spindles were a small bit hard for me I cut myself with the carder and it hurt a little bit . I made two bracelets one was purple and red and the other one was pink and black and white. The wool was really smelly and soft. I will remember her by looking at the things that I made. The best thing that I made was my necklace.

Ms. Ger O'Sullivan came to our school on the 5th and 6th of October. She brought lots of smelly sheeps wool. She brought drop spindles carders and two spinning wheels.
