Nollaig (2004-05)

Visual Arts - one of our community volunteered to share her expertise in the area of découpage with the pupils of Scoil na Croise Naofa. The artist led the boys through the process of building up a Christmas scene . They had decided this would become the official Invitation to their Christmas Play. Thank you for taking time out to visit us. Call again!

We were brave this Christmas and just before the holidays , during rehersals for the play , we had two visits from our Heritage Specialist - Ms Ger O'Sullivan from Ennis. We are studying Alive-O8 this year in class so the theme of merging colours is nothing new to the children and what better way to enhanse their learning than by experiencing it for themselves. We also are very aware of all things environmental and stress eco-friendly practices , as we work towards our Green Flag ,so Ger lea the pupils through the operation of tieing and dying old pieces of sheets and old t-shirts. These were then used as a rather unique Biblical Collection for our dramatic Christmas Production and also we made beautiful wall hangings - adding in shells and drift wood from the local beaches. The last day we returned to weaving with a purpose! Ger encouraged the boys to weave a special symbol into their patterns . These pieces of fabric will be assembled to produce one large wall hanging representing our school. The boys learned not only useful skills from these experiences but also an amazing amount of vocabulary . The simple phrase "Can you help me............... thread the needle ?' comes to mind. We had many variations on this before the exact phrase emerged.!!! I guess this in not a very common experience for boys or girls these days. Here are some moments taken from our time with Ger. Thanks so much for all the enjoyment and also wonder and awe you inspired in both staff and pupils.

The Amazing Journey

It makes a difference when our parents come in to see us. The Christmas play is different every year. In the Christmas play I am Moses, and it is a different play from last year and I like last years and I like this year too. Last year I was a wall.

I am Moses and my role is long and I have been answering God’s call for forty years. I am sick of that one Sarah, she is always laughing. She is giving me a pain in the head. She is having a baby at 90 years of age.

The frieze is good and we all put a 100% into it. It is colourful just like Jesus. There are lots of people in it. The snowmen are cool in I made the big one. I think it is cool and the purple colour is deadly but I like all the colours.

Our play this year is different because we start in the old testament then we go to Jesus’s time and then we have some Irish Saints. I am one of the evangelists, Mark. My role is to tell the Christmas story my way. The frieze in the background shows Jesus in the middle and it shows the generations before and after Jesus as well. It ends with you and me.

It is different to other Christmas plays because there are more Old Testament people than New Testament people. There are some Irish saints as well.

I am Matthew, one of the Evangelists. I have an interesting role in our play. I am good at my words. We have some songs to sing . I like singing the songs. The four Evangelists wrote the life of Jesus in their own way and versions, starting with the story they wanted to start with.

Jesus came from the family of King David. There were fourteen generations from Abraham to King David. There were also fourteen from King David to the exile in Babylon and fourteen more to the Birth of Jesus. We have made a Frieze. There are all people from the play frieze on it. It has lovely colours also. It was coloured with paint and pattern Stamps.

It is different this year because there are different characters. I sing the ten commandments I like my part. The frieze is better this year and more colourful. It is class and cool it is our best Christmas play so far. People came from the amazing Journey and we know a lot about the past.

It is completely different from last year. This year we have sheep, king’s and lots more so we do. It is a lot better than last year because we have lots more people in our play. I am a wise man, I say a lot of lines I am melchoir one of the wise men. Our play involves the four writers of the gospels Casper and Balthasaan are great. There are lots more characters too.

Our play is different because it is told by all different characters, like the four evangelist characters. I like the four evangelists John, Luke, Matthew, and Mark, Sarah and Abraham, Moses, Shepherds kings and three women. My role is to play one of the evangelists Luke. He has quite a lot to say but that doesn’t matter. In the frieze at the back of the class I did some of the mountains and I did the names Luke and John the Baptist. I hope you enjoy our Christmas play this year.

This year our Christmas play is different but very good. It is about the four evangelist who are telling the story they have some problems agreeing with each other but are getting there and there are all the usual and some different characters in it too. I think it is better than ever.

I am John in the Christmas play one of the evangelists and my role is to put the play together with the help of Mathew Mark and Luke. We disagree a lot but eventually agree with the help of some of the other characters I like my part.

We all did a frieze at school It was very good and looks good too. It say a lot. We have all Jesus’s ancestors on it too in order Starting with Abraham and Sarah then David ect. It is very helpful and beautiful. I like my part and think the play will go very well.

Yes our play is different because last year .It was no where near to this years play I prefer this play. I am Moses right hand man. My role part in the play is to say five lines like someone else has to do. Five of the ten Commandments.

Frieze family tree of you and I. The frieze is really good because it has lots of colours. Then we mad some people out of cardboard Then we made the names of the characters After we did that we wrapped some boxes in green wrapping paper and stars wrapping paper for the effect. In the play I wanted to be one of the three wise men of Abraham. When I found out that I was Moses right hand man I was delighted.

I play John the Baptist I come in after every valley I say my usual Prepare all that I am half a prophet, kind of a fortune teller a cool person. I have to wear hair spray for the Hippy style and prepare the prophets. So all that is our naughty play.

Yes it is different because I have to shout when I say prepare, prepare but apart from that it is great. It is not complicated so it is easy. Well first it’s the four evangelists then Abraham and Sarah then Moses and his sheep then the reapers then John the Baptist and Isaiah so it is quite simple.

Jesus family tree is God’s people. Like Moses David Jesus himself so here we go first of all Isaiah then Moses then Sarah and Abraham then David then John the Baptist Mary and Joseph and then the man himself Jesus then the angels the four evangelists the three wise men the three Irish Saints known as the three women and last but not least the shepherds and that’s the family tree.

Yes it is different because it links the new Testament with the old Testament . Yes it is different because the four evangelists tell the story. Yes it is different because the four evangelist are fighting over where they should start the Christmas story. Yes it is different because there are different songs. Yes it is different because the characters bring words. Yes it is different because there are very old songs in it. Yes it is different because there are three acts. Yes it is different because Mary and Joseph meet everyone from the past and the future.

The Amazing Journey to Bible times. People from the bible came to our school on 15th Nov 2004. My favourite bit was the food tasting, they had different types of food my favourite food was the bananas, my favourite new type of food was unleavened bread, my least favourite bit was the dressing up. I was dressed up as Joshua.

On 15th Nov 2004 bible people came to our school to take us on an amazing journey. There were actors like Goliath and there were lots of good stories Norah and Adam and Eve. They were telling us bout the bible there was a display of pictures. After the amazing journey we tried on some of the costumes and we tried the bible food. I liked the ones I knew.

On Monday 15th Nov people came to talk to us about the Bible. They had stories and pictures. The pictures were very colourful and the stories were good. In some of the stories people from Biblical times came out to tell their story. These were Goliath, Noah and Mary. After we all ate some Biblical food. There were melon slices, grapes, apple slices, dates raisins, sunflower seeds and unleavened bread. When we had eaten, we went to the costume room, I found Joseph’s rainbow coat and I put it on. It was a good fit and I liked it. I put on a headboard and looked in the mirror. Then I took them off and went into the other room. Then they went away.

On the 15th Nov, Bible people came to our school to take us on an Amazing Journey. A man called Peter was the narrator. He told us the story about the bible. The room was full with display pictures When he had finished each story a person(character ) came out. The characters were Noah, Goliath and Mary. At the end, we tasted the food that Jesus would have had when he was alive. We tried on the clothes he would have worn too. We also got a book.

We had visitors in school the other day. They told us about the Bible. They had really big boards standing up with pictures on them. He told us loads of stories and we met loads of characters. After that we put loads of costumes then we looked in a big mirror. After that we tried some of the food There was sunflower seeds, melon, dates, unleavened bread and grapes. This was all in relation to the old testament and the new testament of the Bible.

The costumes were nice. The food was nice. The old and the new testament and the bible. They had pictures and displayed. They told stories to everyone,. David killed Goliath with a sling shot. Peter had a mohecan. Goliath was very good. The amazing journey was good.

The Amazing Journey was good. Peter was our presenter. He was cool with his moheken. They had lots of boxes for the play it took them a while to set it up. Then we all put on costumes Mikie had a hard time getting it off. Peter told us lots of stories about the old testament and the new testaments . The display and pictures were cool I liked Adam and Eve the costumes had head bands and a rope. We tried some of the old testament food and the new food. We would not be able to survive with this food I know how they hunt to get fox and pigs and sheep. I would like them to come again especially David, Peter Goliath.

The Amazing Journey was good. Peter was the main story teller. Peter was good and funny. Noah came out first he told us about how God spoke to him. God said to build a boat.

I have learned a lot about Jesus and all of the other people. I have learned about Goliath the he was hit in the head by David. I have learned about Moses and Mary. I ate what the people ate in the old days like apples.

I loved the food testing because I had never tasted some of the food and that was why I liked the food testing. There was a man and his name was Peter. He told us about the 7 Days and 7 Night. He told us about Adam and Eve as well and the New Testament and the Old Testament. I liked the actors and characters. My favourite character was Goliath. We got to try on some of the clothes and we got to put on Goliaths helmet.
