Scoil na Croise Naofa (2004-05)
Ar ais ar scoil

The children came back to a freshly-painted school which had also been professionally cleaned inside and out. The vegetable patch was over-run by pumpkins but the cabbages and onions had done well . Also the marigolds did add a touch of gold with the parsley pushing its way through ! The beans and peas were not as successful but the pumpkin flowers and fruits made up for that. We are hoping that this Halloween we will have our own pumpkins to turn into lanterns and maybe even sell at the local market. Thanks to all concerned including those who helped during the summer holidays. It was much appreciated. We are now composting so that should also be worthwhile and if all goes according to schedule the Court is due a facelift in the near future - here's hoping!

Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness - Dear Grandma – Chere Mamie

One day I went to Grandma and she was very sick. So I called the doctor. When he came he told me that Grandma had Alzheimer’s a gradual progressional disease. Grand ma was not able to think where anything was belonging to her. She was not able to go out on the road by herself.

Dear Grandma.

It must have been very hard for Grandad because he would have watched Grandma 24 hours a day. It was hard for the children to understand her illness. Grandma said a lot of silly things but they understood what it was because she suffered from Alzheimer’s which there is no cure for. It must be very sad for the family to see her been like this.

My name is Shane. I have a sister called Zoe. My best friend is Vicrum. My Grandma has Alzheimer’s disease. She lives with Grandad. After school I go to their house. Grandad found it hard to cope with Grandma. I wrote a poem about Grandma and I was picked to read it out to the class. Then Grandad had a fall on the stairs one night. Mam and I had to go to Grandad and Grandma’s house. So we had to sleep at Vicrum’s house. After a few weeks Grandad came home. The doctor’s advice was to go to a nursing-home. So Grandma and Grandad went to the nursing-home . We go to visit them every week.

Alzheimer’s is a sickness in the brain. It happens to some old people. Some of them have to stay in hospital to be cared for. When they get really sick they act a bit like. Babies. They never get better from Alzheimer’s.

I liked Dear Grandma because it told me about Alzheimer’s disease. I think that Grandad felt like he wanted to cry because Grandma was dying. A lot of things changed like Grandma loosing her memory. I did not know about what Alzheimer’s disease was until the teacher read the story. I know how it feels when someone dies, because my Grandad died.

When Shane said the poem he thought everyone would laugh at him, but the most unlikely person spoke and shocked everyone. Grandad must have been very tired because of Grandma’s Alzheimer’s Disease. The doctors advise was good because it gave them a few options. But when granddad had his accident it was Final. Grandma went to a home. During the day a day-care centre.

In this story there are people called Grandma, Grandad, Shane and Zoe Mam and Dad. Grandma has a disease called Alzheimer’s . There is no cure for this, so she is going to live with it for the rest of her life. The Doctors advice was to put her into a day-care centre or get someone to come out and mind her for the day. When Grandad had his accident . Dad had to mind Grandma. To Dad it was very frustrating having to deal with Grandma.

Dear Grandma

Dear Grandma was a very sad story. It was Shane who told the story. Shane being her Grandson. It saddened everyone in the family Grandma having Alzheimer’s Disease. No one knew how hard it was to tale care of her until Grandad broke his leg. Mum, Dad, Shane or Zoe know how Grandad did it. She kept on getting worse even when she got help. 24 hour care - Day Care Centre. She might say something like “Have you eaten”? over and over again. One night grandma was trying to get out the door. Grandad caught her doing it. He tried to get her but he fell down the stairs and broke his leg. So Shane’s parents had to take care of Grandma and her disease. In school Shane was telling this story. I thought it was very good.

Grandma was sick. She had Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that makes you forget things. It gets worse and worse. Shane made up a poem about Alzheimer’s. Shane’s friend Thomas’s grandfather got Alzheimer’s disease. He died soon after from pneumonia . Shane and his sister Zoe are trying to help Grandma. It is very hard for them. Mum and Dad have to take every second day off to mind Grandma. One night Grandad heard Grandma going out the door. He ran out of the bedroom down the hall and then he slipped down the stairs and broke his leg. When he was at hospital Mum looked after Grandma. In the end Grandad got a Day Care centre to look after Grandma.

All of the stone for Newgrange was navigated up the river Boyne.

The Moon

Our moon is bigger than the planet Pluto. The biggest crater is Bailey’s Crater. Meteorites cause planetisemal impact i.e. when they crash into planets and cause pieces of the surface to break off and fly around in space. There is ice on the moon. Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space. Flags placed on the moon are held open by a wire because there is no wind.
