January 1, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace on the occasion of the New Year and paid homage to President Kim Il Sung. January 1, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited KPA unit no. 932 and warmly congratulated KPA officers and men on the New Year's day. He was accompanied by KPA Vice-Marshal Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission and director of the General Political Department of the KPA and other high-ranking officers.

January 15-20, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong paid an unofficial visit to the People's Republic of China from January 15 to 20 on the invitation of Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the central committee of the Communist Party of China and President of the PRC. Accompanying him were Kim Yong Chun, member of the NDC of the DPRK and chief of the general staff the Korean People's Army, Yon Hyong Muk, member of the NDC of the DPRK, Kim Kuk Thae, secretary, and Jong Ha Chol, department director of the c.c. of the WPK, Kang Sok Ju, first vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kim Yang Gon, department director, and Pak Song Bong, first vice department director of the c.c., the WPK, and KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.

January 21-23, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il visited light industrial factories in Sinuiju, North Phyongan Province from Jan. 21 to 23. Kim visited the Sinuiju Cosmetics Factory, the Sinuiju Enamel Ware Factory and the Sinuiju Basic Foodstuff Factory. He was accompanied by member of the DPRK National Defense Commission Yon Hyong Muk, secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea central committee Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department directors of the c.c., the WPK.

January 24, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il enjoyed an art performance given by the merited chorus of the Korean People's Army together with senior party and state officials on the occasion of the Lunar New Year's day. February 7, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected unit no. 655 of the KPA. He was accompanied by director of the general political department of the KPA Jo Myong Rok, chief of the general staff of the KPA Kim Yong Chun and KPA general Ri Myong Su.

February 9, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received a delegation of the international liaison department of the C.C., the Communist Party of China led by Wang Jiarui on a visit to Korea. Present on the occasion were secretary of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae, director of the international department of the C.C., the WPK Kim Yang Gon, generals of the Korean People's Army Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and Chinese ambassador to the DPRK Wang Guozhng.

February 14, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the Kusong Machine-Tool Factory and the Thaechon Power Station in North Phyongan Province. He was accompanied by secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department directors Pak Song Bong, Ri Yong Chol and Jang Song Thaek of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.

February 20, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il sent a wreath to the bier of the late Pak Song Bong, member and first vice-department director of the WPK Central Committee, expressing his deep condolence over his death. (Kim was not necessarily present)

February 28, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il sent a wreath to the bier of the late Pak Si Hyong, researcher at the faculty of history of Kim il sung university, winner of Kim Il Sung Prize, Labor Hero, academician, professor and doctor, expressing deep condolences over his death. March 22, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, met the visiting delegation of the Communist Party of China led by Zeng Qinghong. Present there were Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the NDC of the DPRK and director of the general political department of the Korean People's Army, Ji Jae Rryong, vice-director of the international department of the C.C., the WPK, and Wang Guozhang, Chinese ambassador e.p. to the DPRK.

March 22, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il sent a message of condolence to the bereaved family of the late Jong Ju Yong [Chung Ju Yung, founder of Hyundai] on his death.

March 23, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il, together with Zeng Qinghong, enjoyed an art performance given by the visiting Shanghai Symphony Orchestra of China at the April 25 House of Culture. When he appeared in the auditorium.

March 23, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il received together with Zeng Qinghong leading members and principal actors and actresses of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra of China led by the director general of the Shanghai municipal culture, radio, film and TV administration, on a visit to the DPRK. Present there were Yon Hyong Muk, Kim Kuk Thae, Han Song Ryong, Kye Ung Thae, Choe Thae Bok, chairman of the central auditing commission of the WPK Pak Yong Sok, director of the information and instruction department of the c.c., the WPK Jong Ha Chol and minister of culture Kang Nung Su. March 23, 2001: Leader Kim Jong il hosted a grand banquet at the Mokran House in honor of the delegation of the Communist Party of China led by Zeng Qinghong and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra on their visit to the DPRK.

March 24, 2001: Leader Kim Jong il sent a wreath to the bier of the late Jong Ju Yong, former honorary chairman of the Hyundai Business Group of South Korea, to express deep condolences over his death. (Kim was not necessarily present)

March 31, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il sent up-to-date educational equipment to the centers for training computer geniuses which were set up this year. latest-type computers sent by him were conveyed to the Mangyongdae and Pyongyang schoolchildren's palaces and Kum Song senior middle schools nos. 1 and 2. March 31, 2001: leader Kim Jong il sent modern farm machines to the Phothae integrated farm in Samjiyon county, Ryanggang province. Farm machines include tractors, harvesters, sprayers, sowing machines and revolving ploughs. (Kim not necessarily present)

April 5, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il took the platform at the opening of the fourth session of the tenth Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

April 10, 2001: Supreme commander Kim Jong Il inspected unit no. 884 of the air force of the Korean People's Army. He was accompanied by generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and other general officers of the Korean People's Army.

April 11, 2001: Kim Jong Il met in Hamhung with South Korean singer in Japan Kim Ryon Ja and her party who came here to participate in the 19th April Spring Friendship Art Festival. Present there was Jong Ha Chol, director of the information and instruction department of the central committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.

April 11, 2001: Kim Jong Il inspected industrial establishments in Hamhung. He visited the Ryongsong Machine Complex and the Songchongang Electric Goods Factory. Kim Jong Il was accompanied by first vice department directors of the C.C. of the WPK.

April 13, 2001: Supreme commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Il issued an order on promoting military ranks of leading officers of the KPA on April 13, Juche 90 (2001). One leading officer was promoted to colonel general, three leading officers were promoted to lieut. Generals and 15 to maj. generals, according to the order. (Kim not necessarily present)

April 15, 2001: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited unit no. 2629 of the KPA honored with the title of "O Jung Hup's Seventh Regiment" to congratulate officers and men of the KPA on the occasion of Sun's Day. He was accompanied by general Ri Myong Su and other general officers of the KPA.

April 16, 2001: Kim Jong Il inspected an artillery battalion of KPA unit no. 3427. He was accompanied by KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and member of the central military commission of the WPK and first vice department director of the party central committee Ri Yong Chol and member of the C.C. the WPK and its first vice department director Jang Song Thaek.

April 17, 2001: Kim Jong Il inspected units of the Korean People's Army nos. 841 and 998.

April 19, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il inspected the fish farm of the fish breeding center managed by Kim Sung Hwan. He was greeted on the spot by Sim Won Il, director of the political department of the Ministry of People's Security, Pak Jung Gun, vice-minister of people's security and leading officials of the center.

April 22, 2001: Kim Jong Il saw an art performance given by the state academy ensemble of the Ministry of Interior of Russia at the Mansudae Art Theatre. Kim received leading members and artistes of the state academy ensemble of the Ministry of Interior of Russia headed by V. P. Yelseev, which had participated in the 19th April Spring Friendship Art Festival.

April 25, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il visited unit no.671 of the KPA and congratulated the servicemen on the 69th birthday of the heroic KPA. He was accompanied by director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, KPA generals Ri Myong Su, Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong, and other general officers. April 28, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il together with servicemen, appreciated a light comedy "May Youth Shine" performed by artistes of the Korean Film Studio at the Mansudae Art Theatre. April 30, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il visited South Hwanghae Province to guide the land realignment project there. Kim Jong Il went round Orori plain in Anak county, Jonjin plain in Samchon county and other places of the province to learn about the progress of the land realignment project in detail.

May 2, 2001: A high-level delegation of the European Union which arrived here to visit the DPRK paid a courtesy call on leader Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Present were members of the delegation led by Goran Persson, President of the European Council and prime minister of Sweden, Javier Solana, high representative for common foreign and security policy of the EU, and Chris Patten, commissioner for external relations of the European Commission. May 3, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il received a visiting high-level delegation of the European Union. May 7, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il inspected KPA unit no. 415 and visited the Rimjingang Power Station no. 1 built by KPA unit no. 567. He was accompanied by KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae, Pak Jae Gyong and other general officers, secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department directors of the c.c., the Workers' Party of Korea.

May 8, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il inspected KPA unit no. 688. May 13, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il visited an artillery company under KPA unit no. 243. He was accompanied by KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.

May 13, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il gave on-site guidance to Kwail county, South Hwanghae Province. He visited the Sindae Farm of the Kwail county integrated fruit farm and the Ryongsupho Beach in the seaside of the county. July 1, 2001: Chinese ambassador to Korea Wang Guozhang gave a party at the embassy in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Communist Party of China. July 7, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il inspected the RyuJong Cooperative Farm in Thaethan county and the Jaechon Cooperative Farm in Jaeryong county, South Hwanghae Province, whose land has been realigned. Accompanying him were secretary Kim Kuk Thae, director of the propaganda and agitation department Jong Ha Chol and first vice department directors of the WPK central committee and generals of the Korean People's Army Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.

July 8, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace to pay homage to President Kim Il Sung on the greatest memorial day of the nation. July 26, 2001: Kim Jong Il crosses over the border into Russia on his special train.

July 29, 2001: Kim's train stops in Ulan-Ude, Russia, but he doesn't leave the train, instead choosing to breakfast with Konstantin Pulikovsky, Putin's personal envoy in Russia's far east. Kim's train also stopped briefly at Lake Baikal.

July 31, 2001: Kim Jong Il arrives in Omsk, where he visits the Omsk transport machine plant, the Omsk Bekon agriculture complex and the Pushkin Library.

Present at the talks on the DPRK side were members of the NDC of the DPRK Kim Yong Chun, chief of the general staff of the Korean People's Army, and Yon Hyong Muk, Kim Kuk Thae, secretary of the central committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Jo Chang Dok, vice-premier of the DPRK cabinet, Jong Ha Chol, director of the propaganda and agitation department of the central committee of the WPK, Kang Sok Ju, first vice-minister of foreign affairs, Pak Nam Gi, chairman of the state planning commission, Kim Yong Sam, minister of railways, Ri Kwang Ho, president of the Academy of Sciences, Pak Ui Chun, DPRK ambassador e.p. to Russia, and other suite members.

August 4, 2001: President V.V. Putin of the Russian Federation hosted a grand banquet in honor of Kim Jong Il, Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, at the Grand Kremlin Palace. Kim Jong Il was invited to the banquet.

August 5, 2001: The presidential orchestra of the Kremlin gave a performance in the Vladimir Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace in honor of leader Kim Jong Il.

August 19, 2001: Leader Kim Jong Il inspected KPA unit no. 696 stationed in North Hamgyong Province just after his return home from his foreign tour. August 19 (20?): Leader Kim Jong Il visited the Ranam Coal Mining Machine Complex to meet workers there just after he returned home from his historic foreign tour.
