January 3, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il commended basketball players for their great contribution to the development of the nation's sports technique. Kim awarded Ri Myong Hun and Pak Chon Jong gold watches bearing the august name of the President Kim Il Sung. (Kim not necessarily present)

January 12, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il sent a wreath to the bier of So Tong Bom, chairman of the central committee of the Korean Journalists Union. (Kim not necessarily present)

January 24, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited Thaechon and Nyongbyon counties in North Phyongan Province to direct its land leveling and rezoning. He was accompanied by Kim Kuk Thae, Kim Ki Nam and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the Central Committee of the WPK, vice marshal of the Korean People's Army Ri Yong Mu, vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK Pak Yong Sok, member of the Central Committee of the WPK and chairman of the central auditing commission of the WPK, first vice-directors of departments of the WPK Central Committee and KPA general officers.

January 25-28, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the industrial sector in North Phyongan Province. Kim visited the Rakwon Machine Plant, the Kusong Machine Tool Plant, the December 5 Youth Mine, the Ryangchaek Bearing Plant, the Sinuiju Shoe-Making Plant, the Sinuiju Textile Mill and other industrial establishments. He was accompanied by Kim Phyong Hae, chief secretary of the north Phyongan provincial committee of the WPK, Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee, and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee.

January 26, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected KPA unit no. 1158. He was accompanied by KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and other general officers of the KPA.

February 2, 2000 [Wednesday]: General Secretary Kim Jong Il sent gifts to the members of the youth league and the children's union of senior middle schools in the excursion of the "250-mile journey for national liberation," by plane. (Kim not necessarily present)

February 12, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected a women's coastal battery under KPA unit 440.

February 12, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the newly reconstructed Mujigae (rainbow) tunnel on the Pyongyang-Wonsan Motorway. He was accompanied by secretaries Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam of the WPK Central Committee, and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee Jang Song Thaek and Choe Chun Hwang.

February 17, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il met the family of Om Pok Sun, an officer of the Korean People's Army. Present there were KPA officers Son Mun Gyu and Om Pok Sun and their daughters Son Kyong Sil and Son Kyong sun, soldiers of the KPA. Also present were secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and other KPA general officers.

February 17, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il sent a gift to Yuwen middle school in Jilin, China, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of friendly relations between Changdok school of the DPRK and the middle school. (Kim not necessarily present)

February 19, 2000 [Friday]: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected KPA Kum Song lifeguard unit no. 894 on the forefront. Accompanying him were KPA vice marshal Jon Jae Son and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

February 24, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il sent a wreath on the death of Jon Yong Hun, alternate member of the Central Committee of the Worker's Party of Korea.

February 28, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il met with the participants in a meeting of KPA company political instructors. Among those accompanying him were Jo Myong Rok, director of the KPA general political department, Kim Yong Chun, chief of the general staff, Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Armed Forces, vice marshals Jon Jae Son and Pak Ki So, and general officers of the KPA.

February 29, 2000 [Monday]: General Secretary Kim Jong Il, together with the participants in a meeting of company political instructors of the Korean People's Army, saw a performance given by the KPA merited choir at the April 25 House of Culture. Seeing the performance with him were director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, KPA vice marshals Jon Jae Son and Pak Ki So, commanders of arms and services and other general officers of the KPA.

March 1, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received Ho Jong Man, chief vice-chairman of the central standing committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon).

March 6, 2000 [Sunday]: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Chinese embassy. He was accompanied by director of the general political department of the Korean People's Army Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong, col. general of KPA Ri Myong Su, first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee Jang Song Thaek and Choe Chun Hwang, and vice department director of the WPK Central Committee Ji Jae Ryong. At the embassy he was received by ambassador Wan Yongxiang and leading officials of the embassy.

March 6, 2000 [Sunday]: General Secretary Kim Jong Il sent a wreath to the bier of Kim Ryong Jo, People's Artiste of the April 25 Film Studio of the KPA.

March 12, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il enjoyed a performance given by art propaganda squads of the navy and air force commands of the Korean People's Army. The performance was appreciated by director of the general political department of the KPA Jo Myong Rok, chief of the general staff of the KPA Kim Yong Chun, Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol and other KPA general officers, and secretary of the Central Committee of the Worker's Party of Korea Kim Yong Sun and first vice-directors of departments of the party central committee.

March 27, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave guidance to the Taehongdan county integrated farm in Ryanggang Province, visiting Taehongdan Power Station no. 1, Sinhung branch farm, and the demobilized soldiers' village in the Sodu branch farm, including a stop at the house of Min Won Sik, a demobilized soldier. He was accompanied by Kye Ung Thae and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the Central Committee of the WPK, and Jang Song Thaek, first vice director of a department of the WPK Central Committee.

March 28, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected a power station built by soldiers of Korean People's Army unit no. 380.

March 29, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il toured revolutionary battle sites in the area of Mt. Paektu, including the secret camp on Mt. Paektu, the Sajabong secret camp, the Chongbong camping ground and other historical battle sites where the President Kim Il Sung conducted brisk military and political activities during the anti-Japanese armed struggle after advancing into the homeland. He was accompanied by secretary of the WPK Central Committee Kim Yong Sun, director of the party history institute Kang Sok Sung and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee. April 2, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the University of Automation. He was accompanied by KPA vice marshals Jo Myong Rok and Kim Il Chol and other KPA general officers and by Choe Thae Bok and Kim Kuk Thae, secretaries of the Central Committee of the WPK, and first vice department directors of the party central committee.

April 4, 2000: Kim Jong Il was present for the opening of the 3rd session of the 10th Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea opened at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

April 9, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected unit no.1311 of the Korean People's Army. Accompanying him were director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

April 15, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace at 00:00 on April 15, Sun's Day, to pay homage to the President Kim Il Sung. Accompanying him were first vice-chairman of the NDC and director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, member of the NDC and chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, vice-chairman of the NDC and Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, and secretary of the WPK Central Committee Jon Pyong Ho, KPA marshal Ri Ul Sol, Kim Chol Man and Minister of People's Security Paek Hak Rim, who are members of the NDC, vice-chairman of the NDC Ri Yong Mu and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

April 15, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the navy command of the Korean People's Army and congratulated officers and men of the KPA on Sun's Day. He was accompanied by Jo Myong Rok, director of the KPA general political department, Kim Yong Chun, chief of the KPA general staff, Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Armed Forces, and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

April 25, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited Korean People's Army unit no. 1321 to congratulate the servicemen on the 68th foundation anniversary of the heroic KPA. He was accompanied by KPA vice marshal Jon Jae Son and staff members of the supreme command and Kim Yong Sun, secretary of the WPK Central Committee, and first vice department directors of the party central committee.

May 9, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited a tropical catfish plant built by soldiers of the Korean People's Army. He was accompanied by Jo Myong Rok, director of the KPA general political department, Kim Yong Chun, chief of the KPA general staff, Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Armed Forces, KPA marshal Ri Ul Sol and KPA generals as well as by secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors of the party central committee.

May 16, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il provided on-site guidance to the Pukjung Machinery Complex in North Phyongan Province. He was accompanied by chief secretary of the north Phyongan provincial committee of the Worker's Party of Korea Kim Phyong Hae, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors of the party central committee.

May 19, 2000(? several day tour): General Secretary Kim Jong Il toured various places including cooperative farms in Uiju county, Kwaksan county and Jongju city as part of a trip to direct the land realignment project in North Phyongan Province. He was accompanied by director of the general political department of the Korean People's Army Jo Myong Rok, chief of the general staff of the KPA Kim Yong Chun, vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission Ri Yong Mu, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee.

May 29-31, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il paid an unofficial visit to the People's Republic of China at the invitation of Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the central committee of the Communist Party of China and President of the PRC. He was accompanied by Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and director of the general political department of the Korean People's Army, Kim Yong Chun, member of the DPRK National Defence Commission and chief of the KPA general staff, Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee and Kim Yang Gon, director of a department of the WPK Central Committee. Kim met with Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress, Zhu Rongji, premier of the State Council, and Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Kim also attended a dinner hosted by Hu Jintao, member of the standing committee of the political bureau of the c.c., CPC and vice-president of the PRC. During his stay Kim visited the Tiananmen castle turret and the computer plant of the Lianxiang Group, guided by Jia Qinglin.

June 13, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il greeting South Korean President Kim Dae Jung at Pyongyang Airport. Also present were Kim Yong Nam, President of the presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the NDC of the DPRK and director of the KPA General Political Department, Choe Thae Bok, chairman of the SPA, Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the Worker's Party of Korea Central Committee, Kim Yun Hyok, secretary of the SPA presidium, Kim Yong Dae, chairman of the c.c., the Korean Social Democratic Party, and other leading officials of the party and power bodies, public organizations, ministries and national institutions. Kim Jong Il and Kim Dae Jung went to the state guest house where he had a conversation and posed for a picture.

June 14, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il held talks with South Korean President Kim Dae Jung. The two signed the North-South Joint Declaration. They drank toasts to the signing and had a souvenir picture taken.

June 14, 2000: Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Worker's Party of Korea and Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, attended a dinner hosted by South Korean President Kim Dae Jung at the Mokran House in Pyongyang.

June 15, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il hosted a luncheon for South Korean President Kim Dae Jung. Also present were Kim Dae Jung's wife, Rim Tong Won, special aide to the president, Pak Jae Gyu, Minister of Unification, Ri Hon Jae, Minister of Finance and Economy, Pak Ji Won, Minister of Culture and Tourism, and other suite members. June 21, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the Nyongbyon and Pakchon silk mills in north Phyongan. June 23, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il saw a performance given by families of servicemen of KPA unit no. 604 who participated in the 3rd contest of art circles of families of servicemen of the KPA. He was accompanied by secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee, KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and other general officers of the KPA.

June 29, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received Jong Ju Yong [Chung Ju Young], Honorary President of the South Korean Hyundai Business Group, and Jong Mong Hon [Chung Mong Hun], chairman of the Hyundai Asan board of directors, in Wonsan. Also present was Kim Yong Sun, chairman of the Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee.

July 19, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il hosted a banquet at the Mokran House in honor of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, President of the Russian Federation. Also present were deputy prime minister I. I. Klebanov, Foreign Minister I. S. Ivanov, Defence Minister I. D. Sergeyev and other suite members and Russian Ambassador E.P. to the DPRK V. I. Denisov and embassy officials, as well as Kim Yong Nam, President of the presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, Jo Myong Rok, director of the general political department of the KPA who is also first vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, and other leading officials of party, armed forces and power institutions, commissions and ministries of the cabinet, national institutions and press organs.

July 19, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the DPRK-Russia Joint Declaration.

July 20, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il sees Russian President Vladimir Putin off at the Pyongyang Airport.

August 1,2, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the Kim Chaek Iron Works, the March 17 Power Station, newly-built minor power stations, a saltern now under construction in Orang county, the Chongjin Fish Farm and other industrial establishments in North Hamgyong Province. He was accompanied by Ri Kun Mo, chief secretary of the north Hamgyong provincial committee of the WPK, Kim Kuk Thae, secretary of the C.C., the WPK, Pak Nam Gi, chairman of the State Planning Commission, first vice-directors of departments of the party central committee and officials concerned.

August 9, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received chairman Jong Mong Hon [Chung Mong Hun] of Hyundai Asan board of directors from South Korea.

August 12, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received the delegation of South Korean media organizations on a visit to Pyongyang.

August 26,27: General Secretary Kim Jong Il guided the work at power stations built on the River Songchon, the June 4 Plant, the Tongbong Cooperative Farm in Hamju county and other units in South Hamgyong Province. Kim was accompanied by first vice department directors of the WPK central committee Pak Song Bong and Ri Yong Chol, chief secretary of the South Hamgyong Provincial Committee of the WPK Ri Thae Nam, and chairman of the South Hamgyong Provincial People's Committee Kim Phung Gi.

August 28, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Kalma rest home in Wonsan, which has been built by soldiers of the KPA. He was accompanied by Yon Hyong Muk, chief secretary of the Jagang Provincial Committee of the WPK, Jon Pyong Ho and Kim Kuk Thae, secretaries of the c.c., the WPK, and its first vice-department directors.

September 1, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il met South Korean Minister of Unification Pak Jae Gyu, chief delegate of the delegation of the south side to the 2nd round of the north-south ministerial talks. Secretary Kim Yong Sun of the Central Committee of the Worker's Party of Korea was also present.

September 15, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il met with a visiting delegation of the international liaison department of the central committee of the Communist Party of China led by Dai Bingguo, member of the CPC central committee and head of the international liaison department. Also present were secretaries Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, department director Kim Yang Gon and vice-department director Ji Jae Ryong of the WPK Central Committee and Wang Guozhang, Chinese ambassador to Korea.

September 20, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited a newly-built catfish farm. September 30, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the Mt. Kumgang tourist area now being developed by Hyundai Asan of South Korea. He was met at the resort by Chung Mong Hun of Hyundai Asan. Kim was accompanied by Kim Yong Sun, chairman of the Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, Pak Song Bong, first vice-department director of the Central Committee of the Worker's Party of Korea, Song Ho Gyong, vice-chairman of the Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, and KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.

October 4, 2000: KPA Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il issued an order on promoting military ranks of commanding officers of the KPA on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Worker's Party of Korea. According to the order, Ri Myong Su received the military title of General, Kim Kum Son and Ri Chan Bok that of Colonel General, six other commanding officers that of Lieutenant General and 35 others that of major general. October 10, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace to pay homage to the President Kim Il Sung on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the WPK. October 18, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il provided on-the-spot guidance to a catfish farm newly built by people's army soldiers. He was accompanied by director of the general political department of the KPA Jo Myong Rok and KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.

October 20, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received Choe Hong Hui, president of the International Taekwon-do Federation. Also present were secretaries Kim Jung Rin and Kim Yong Sun of the Central Committee of the Worker's Party of Korea.

October 23, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright. Also present was Kang Sok Ju, first vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kim hosted a dinner for Albright that was also attended by Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and director of the general political department of the Korean People's Army, Kim Yong Chun, chief of the KPA general staff, Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Srmed Forces, Kang Sok Ju, first vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Kim Kye Gwan, vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs. Later, Kim and Albright watched a 100,000-strong gymnastic display and art performance "Ever-victorious Worker's Party of Korea" at the May Day Stadium.

October 24, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il held talks with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Also present was Kang Sok Ju, first vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kim later attended a banquet hosted by Albright at the Mokran House in Pyongyang.

October 25, 2000: October 25 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il received a high-ranking Chinese military delegation led by colonel general Chi Haotian, vice-chairman of the central military commission of the People's Republic of China, state councillor and Minister of National Defence. Present were Kim Yong Nam, president of the presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, vice marshal Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and director of the general political department of the KPA, vice marshal Kim Yong Chun, member of the DPRK National Defence Commission and chief of the KPA general staff, vice marshal Kim Il Chol, vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and Minister of the People's Armed Forces, Kim Kuk Thae, Kim Jung Rin and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the central committee of the WPK, and Jong Ha Chol and Kim Yang Gon, department directors of the WPK central committee in addition to Wang Guozhang, Chinese ambassador to the DPRK, and Yan Jiangfeng, military attache of the Chinese embassy. Kim and Chi later attended a rally to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteers' entry into the Korean front held at the May Day Stadium.

October 30, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received Ho Jong Man, chief vice-chairman of the central standing committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon).

October 31, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il went to the Kim Il Sung stadium where grand sports games of artistes were under way to encourage them. He was accompanied by Kim Kuk Thae, Kim Jung Rin and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the Central Committee of the WPK, Jong Ha Chol, department director of the WPK Central Committee, and Pak Myong Chol, chairman of the Korean Physical and Sports Guidance Committee. November 7, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il provided on-the-spot guidance to the Anbyon Youth Power Station, the Naephyong Power Station and the sideline farm of KPA unit no. 549. November 27, 2000: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the Taehongdan county integrated farm and the Phothae integrated farm in Samjiyon county of Ryanggang Province.
