Welcome to Admiral Yi Sun Shin's Turtle Boat Cafe!

Soft o'er the blue ocean late glows the autumn light,
High in the frosty sky the wild-geese honk on wing so cold;
With a grieving heart I roll without sleep the whole night,
The dying moon shines on my bow and sword.

This site began in homage to Korea's Admiral Yi Sun Shin, a naval commander likened to Britain's Horatio Nelson. Born in 1545, Yi led the Korean navy in the Imjin War (1592-1598), inventing the "Turtle Ships," beating back the Japanese invaders while fighting jealous rivals at home, and ultimately dying in the midst of his last victorious battle.

This site includes a brief biography of the life of Admiral Yi, as well as some images, maps and other graphics depicting his life, times and exploits. More detailed descriptions of his actions, as well as links to other Yi Sun Shin information will be coming.

This site also covers other aspects of Korea, from a large (but by no means exhaustive) list of internet links on Korea and Korean issues to a pet project of mine, tracking the movement of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, as well as a link to my weblog .
