January 1, 1998: Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace at 00:00 on January 1, the New Year Juche 87 (1998), to pay respects to President Kim Il Sung, who lies in state at the Palace.

January 1, 1998: Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, attended a performance given by the merited choir of the song and dance ensemble of the KPA.
