Episode 9

Last episode Alison got eliminated. She of the remaining contestants knew the least about who The Mole was. Only four people remain...

So who out of those four is The Mole?
How about Cam?

Cam:"I'm not The Mole. I couldn't possibly be The Mole. I've never told a lie in my life!"
It was the photos in Cam's camera that were erased in episode 3 and it cost them $ 10,000.
In the jail in episode 6 it was Cam who dropped the ball. And instead of winning $ 10,000 they lost $ 10,000.
And in episode 7 he deliberately opened his canister, instantly losing $ 1,000.

Or maybe The Mole is Nathan?

Nathan:"No I'm not The Mole. I'm here to take home the cash. It's as simple as that."
On the very first day, Nathan failed to open the safe.
In the plank walk, he was the only contestant who fell.
And in last episode at the dam, it was Nathan who wasted time by running all the way to the bottom.

Then there's Petrina...

Petrina:"I'm not The Mole. I wish I was, I so want to have all these experiences! But it's not me."
When she went parachuting, Petrina failed to remember a four digit number!
Crossing the highwire, it was Petrina's racing heart that cost so much time.
In episode 5, Petrina got eliminated. But she was then offered to come back into the game. Her decision to return cost the group $ 50,000.

Or maybe the Mole is Shaun...

Shaun:"No way, I'm not The Mole. I can't keep a secret to anyone."
Day 1 and Shaun failed to predict that Josh would parachute.
At the plank walk Shaun refused to attempt the challenge. It cost the team $ 5,000.
And in the arrest game it was Shaun who found a note addressed to The Mole. Was the note genuine or was Shaun playing a clever game of double bluff?

Day 19 - New Caledonia
They go to a cruise boat, which will be used as a kind of maze. Nathan has answered two questions. Cam, Petrina and Shaun have to try to find Nathan who is locked somewhere in a cabin by guessing how Nathan has answered the two questions. If they succeed, they win $ 2,000.

Question 1: Nathan has been shopping in a supermarket. As he's leaving the supermarket, he realizes that he was given change for $50 instead of for the $20 note he paid with. Does Nathan return the money or keep it?
Petrina thinks he'll keep it even though he's quite honest. Shaun:"Yeah but I reckoned that he wouldn't give those girl scouts any money." (in an earlier challenge) Petrina:"And what did he do?" Shaun:"He gave them money..."
Cam also thinks he'll keep it though and so they go for that answer. If they're correct, they're on the right way and only need to answer one more question correctly.
Question 2: Four good looking party girls approach him and explain that it is their friend's hens-night and that the stripper hasn't turned up. They tell Nathan they're desperate and want to pay him $250 if he stands in for the stripper and goes the full monty. What will he do?
Shaun thinks he won't. Cam thinks he would. Petrina also thinks he wouldn't do it, so they go for the majority and have to knock on the door to the left of them.
Petrina knocks on the door. We see Nathan standing up and saying hello, but he opens the door on the right of him, so they were wrong! He answered that he would strip for $250!

It's now Cam's turn to answer two questions and the others have to find him.
Question 1: Cam is undercharged at a restaurant. Does he keep quiet or point out the mistake?
They're all sure he would be dishonest and keep quiet.
Question 2: Cam sees a man being bashed up. Does he help the guy out or walk away?
They are all sure he will help the guy out and knock on that door. But they're wrong and they miss out on $ 2,000.
Cam said he wouldn't help out a man who was being bashed up. Nathan and Petrina ask him about it before they go searching Shaun. Cam:"I'm a lover, not a fighter!" Nathan:"But you do boxing!"
Petrina:"We thought for sure you'd do it, but you would walk away?!"
Cam:"I get paid to be a hero, I'm not a hero in my spare time."

Shaun has answered his questions.
Question 1: Shaun is tempted by his best friend's girlfriend to sleep with her. Does he resist her advances or spend the night with her?
Petrina:"He resists, it's his best mate and he's loyal!" Everyone agrees.
Question 2: It's late at night and Shaun is looking for an ATM. He finally finds one and puts his card into the machine. Only then does he notice that there is $200 the previous visitor of the machine forgot to take. Does he hand it in or does he take the money?
Petrina and Cam immediately point at the door of 'taking the money', but Nathan doubts. But since it's two against one, they go for 'taking the money'.
Nobody answers though and he's not behind the other door either. They were wrong about both questions! Shaun had said that he would hand the money in. He also said he'd sleep with his best mate's girlfriend!

Petrina is the last one. Since they haven't won any money in this challenge yet, the host offers them $ 5,000 if they succeed now.
Question 1: Petrina is being interviewed for a job she really wants. The employers are looking for specific skills she doesn't have. Does she lie or tell the truth?
Shaun thinks she'd tell the truth. Cam:"But who doesn't lie about their resumé though?"
They agree and think Petrina would lie. They are right! So if they have the next question correct too, they'll win $ 5,000.
Question 2: Petrina is in a bar with her friends. A guy who's good looking, smart and charming joins in the conversation and soon hits on Petrina. She's attracted to him, but the guy is wearing a wedding ring and when Petrina asks him about it, he says that he and his wife have separated. Does Petrina go out on a date with him or refuse the invitation.
Nathan thinks she'd refuse. Shaun:"Oh come on!" Cam agrees with Nathan. Shaun:"So I'm overruled again.."
Host:"Shaun, what do you think?" Shaun:"I think she'd go out on a date, but... it looks like it doesn't matter what I think..." They go for the majority and think she'll refuse the invitation. But they're wrong. Petrina is in the other room. She would date a married man. The guys tell her she's a homewrecker. They had 4 attempts to win money, but didn't win anything! Maybe The Mole did a great job. Or maybe the sabotage came from a genuine contestant...

Petrina:"I wanted to do something that was obviously out of character so that the boys would be suspicious of me. And I think it's working!"

But Petrina wasn't the only one playing games...
CC
Cam:"Personally, I wasn't interested in anyone finding me at all. When they didn't, that was more of a victory to me than actually winning the $ 2,000. I can only assume that everyone else is thinking the same."

Day 20 - New Caledonia
Next challenge: the contestants are called by the host, who tells them that in the car they will find an i-pack with pictures of people. Those people are New Caledonian sports champions. They have to compete against them in windsurfing, outrigger canoeing, petanque and cricket. They have to try not to choose a champion to compete against.

In the car they see the pictures. There's one woman and they think she has a water sport. Petrina suggests to let the woman do cricket and Nathan agrees. Nathan wants to let the older guy play petanque and he thinks the young guy with streaks in his hair will be a windsurfer and the last one looks like a cricket player.

They reach the town centre and have to make their choice. They can win $ 5,000 for each game they win.
Nathan goes canoeing against the young guy, because he has done that before. They both have a quick start, but then disaster strikes for Nathan. His boat flips over and he has to get back in. By the time he reaches the buoy and wants to go back, his opponent has already reached the finish.

Nathan:"As I turned towards the beach and saw the guy cheering I thought 'This bloke better be the canoeing champion or I'll look terrible!' "

But the guy wasn't a canoeist! He's a windsurfer!
Petrina plays petanque against the older guy. The person who gets his ball closest to the jack, is the winner. They each have three balls and Petrina starts. Her first ball is less than a meter from the jack, but her opponent gets closer. Petrina's second ball knocks her opponent's ball away and puts her in a winning position, but then the opponent's second ball gets closer to the jack. Petrina's last ball misses and so another $ 5,000 goes begging. She lost a game of petanque again the champion in outrigger canoeing.

It's now up to Cam and windsurfing, but it doesn't seem to be his kind of sport. He falls into the water three times.

Cam:"By the time I got back on my feet, I saw the other guy already at the beach, waving at me."

He loses against the petanque champion! Another $ 5,000 down the drain.
Shaun can play Australia's national sport: cricket. However, that's also the national sport in New Caledonia, albeit in a different form. Shaun gets the bat and looks at it puzzled.

Shaun:"The at was about three inches round with one side shaved off and a handle as big as my wrist and I thought this must be a joke!"

What he doesn't know, is that in New Caledonia, cricket is a sport for women and he's chosen the cricket champion to play against! Shaun has to survive 18 balls with his sticks being hit.
CC
Shaun:"It was like playing cricket with a superball and steroids and a didgeridoo basically!"

Ball 15 and he's doing it great! But the next ball was the beginning of the end...
CC
Shaun:"I had the hit it for the 16th time and she hit me in the nuts!"

The ball bounces on the ground and into his crotch... And then the 17th ball, the girl hits his goal and it's game over.
CC
Shaun:"Basically, I failed at my challenge, but I don't feel so bad, because the others weren't playing against the experts in their fields and still got eaten anyway."

They don't win any money again! Everyone lost their challenge!
CC
Nathan:"Some people want to sabotage it because they're The Mole and some want to sabotage to throw people off. It's really starting to get dirty now."

Day 21 - New Caledonia
Things will get even dirtier in the next challenge... They are blindfolded and taken to a location. They don't know it yet, but someone might win an exemption today, securing their spot into the final round!
CC
Cam:"It's getting pretty serious now. You've got a one in three chance of winning I suppose. So you got to play hard, it's getting competitive, but still reasonably friendly, which is good."
Shaun:"We're all in it for the money. If anyone says they're not, they're telling lies! And if I go home with the money, I'll be laughing!"
Petrina:"I can feel that money in my bank account! I can see myself spending it!"

They're going to a secret location. They are not allowed to know where they're going and if anyone cheats, it will cost them the assignment. They will play a knock out competition. Round one will be a math's problem and Nathan and Cam will try to knock out Shaun and Petrina. They have to solve mathematical problems first.
First one:

Solution: (14 - 7) * 6 = 42
So the solution of the other one is... (11 - 6) * 7 = 35
They quickly solve it, but the second puzzle is harder:

Solution: (13 - 9) * 4 = 16
So the solution is... (8 - 5) * 24 = 72
They struggle and it takes them more than 5 minutes. In total they spent 6 minutes 35 seconds.

Shaun and Petrina now have to try to solve it too and try to beat the time Cam and Nathan took. Petrina quickly solves the first one.
Second puzzle: Petrina:"Come on Shaun, help me out!" Shaun:"I was never good at maths!"
She solves it quickly though. In total, they spent 3 minutes! So the battle will now be between Shaun and Petrina.
Shaun has to answer 8 trivia questions now and try to do it as fast as possible. He gets multiple choice. If he chooses the wrong one, the question is repeated, thus losing time.

Shaun thinks Norway, which is wrong. the question gets repeated and he then goes for Finland, which is correct.

Shaun:"Sapphire."

Shaun:"Radio."

Shaun:"Leyland."

He did well! Petrina must do it quicker now. She has question 2 wrong 2 times and question 7 one time. But she did it slower than Shaun. So Shaun wins! He now has to do a memory test with playing cards. The other three are driven a kilometre away, still blindfolded. They have to go back to the location, where Shaun is playing the memory game. They have to find him before he has matched up 26 pairs of cards. He can only flip over 2 cards at a time and has to remember which card was where. If he finishes before the others find him, he'll win an exemption! But if the others do find him on time, they win $ 5,000 for the group pot and Shaun won't get the exemption.
The three start of. Petrina:"You guys, I think we have to look for a hotel!" Nathan:"It's not a hotel, it's a yacht club!"
They split up and Nathan runs straight to the yacht club at the marina.
After four minutes, Shaun is already halfway. After a while he has 8 pairs left and it will take him about a minute to finish the game, but Cam and Nathan are right in front of the building Shaun's in! They run upstairs and find Shaun, who hasn't finished yet. They robbed him of the exemption, but win $ 5,000!

Shaun:"If the screen turns red tonight it will feel like someone's given me the biggest kick in the guts I've ever got. I've got this far, I'll be happy, but to get this far and being in arm's reach of winning... it'll be the worst feeling I've ever had!"

Suspicions
As in every questionnaire, they have to answer 6 questions. This time, the questions are shown:
1) On board the ship, when did The Mole do the questionnaire?
2) What sport did The Mole play?
3) What champion did The Mole compete against?
4) Where did The Mole sit on the way to the exemption challenge?
5) When did The Mole's pair play the math's game?
6) Who is The Mole?

Cam:"I've gone after Petrina. Ever since I got back in the game I've gone after Petrina the whole time and that was great. Right up to this morning... when I went to bed I thought it's Petrina, when I woke up this morning I thought 'Oh no, it's Shaun!' "
Shaun:"My hunt for The Mole is firming up. I'm still not 100 % sure and I don't think I will be, but if I go, I was obviously wrong. If it's one of the boys, I know I'm on the right track at the moment."
Petrina:"In the last few days I've really hunted on Shaun as The Mole. I was kind of going for Shaun and Cam and I still have that as a possibility, but I'm much more certain of Shaun at the moment."
Nathan:"I don't think Shaun is it. I really can't picture him being The Mole at all. But Cam... very dark person. When there's three people around you, everyone's at each other's throat or everyone can be against each other. You think you've got a mate sitting next to you and then you realize you might be chatting with your enemy. You can't really trust the person next to you."

In a few minutes, we will know who will not make it to the final round. It has been a long journey, which has taken its toll.

Cam:"I'm so tired and exhausted. I can't think, I can't eat, I can't sleep... I'm physically and emotionally just bankrupt at this point and I'm teary. For the first time in many years I'm teary. I just want to... I just want to cry."
Shaun:"The total exhaustion, the tiredness, the confusion, the anger. It's just been a rollercoaster of emotions."
Petrina:"Ok, so I've made it through to episode 9. I'm here and if I make it through tonight's elimination I'm in the final round and if I'm in the final round... man, I'm so going to win that money!"

Suspicious in this episode
Shaun answered he would sleep with his best friend's girlfriend.
Cam, a fireman, says he wouldn't help someone who's being bashed up.
Nathan would strip for money.
Petrina would date a married man.
All of them gave weird answers to look suspicious, but this also resulted in not winning any money.
Nathan loses the canoeing game against a windsurfer.
Petrina loses petanque against the canoeing champion.
Cam falls down with his surfboard many times and loses against the petanque champion.
Shaun has chosen to play cricket against the cricket champion and also loses.
How did Nathan seem to know exactly where to find Shaun?

Elimination
After making the questionnaire, they go to the dinner table. For one of them, it will be their last supper. The host toasts on them and congratulates them on getting so far. Host:"Well, it's customary at this stage in the game to make an offer. Will The Mole please put their hand up?"
No one raises their hand.
Host:"Come on now, let's end it. Who are you? Who is The Mole?"
Still, no one answers. So the host is about to begin the elimination. However, he's got one small thing to tell them first...
Host:"Yesterday's exemption challenge... we have looked back at the tapes and there is evidence that you cheated on that assignment."

We get to see footage of the contestants sitting in the car with blindfolds on. None of them knew there were hidden cameras in the car. We see Nathan rolling his blindfold up a bit and tilting his head back. This way, he could see exactly where he was.
Flashback
The three start of. Petrina:"You guys, I think we have to look for a hotel!" Nathan:"It's not a hotel, it's a yacht club!"
They split up and Nathan runs straight to the yacht club at the marina.

That knowledge won them $ 5,000 and it robbed Shaun of his free pass. The host tells them they lose the $ 5,000 they won. And he has more news. Shaun can relax, because he now gets the exemption anyway! Nathan then volunteers to go first in the elimination and also announces that he never cheated.
