Australian Mole 4
The Mole: In Paradise
Episode 10

After Nathan's cheating, Shaun got an exemption after all. Cam
eventually got the red screen and was sent home.
Seven contestants failed to identify the Mole and got sent home. Only three people remain and could be The Mole:

Nathan
Shaun
Petrina
Day 22 - New Caledonia
The contestants are at the capital of New Caledonia: Noumea. They
don't know it yet, but their adventure will end that night at the Meridien Hotel
at the Isle of Pines, 50 kilometres away from them. The host is already there
and calls them. Petrina answers the cell phone. The host explains that they
can win $20,000 if they manage to find him. Host:"To get you started I
suggest you look on the island in the middle of the pool of your hotel."
They also lose $1 of the $20,000 for every second it takes to find him.
The challenge starts and they immediately start running while Petrina
explains the challenge. Whilst running, Nathan takes off his clothes
(apart from his swimming trunks of course) and dives into the water to swim to a
small island in the middle which has a board with a jigsaw on it. The jigsaw
tells them which location they have to go to next. It's a map and there are
clues written on it as well. They have to get to the top of the lighthouse where
Josh was held prisoner and they have to get there by helicopter.
CC
Petrina:"We disregarded a lot of the land pieces and focused on
the pieces with words. And we made out fairly quickly that we had to go to the
Amedee lighthouse."

The sentence they find
tells them they will find the next jigsaw pieces at the lighthouse and have to
go to the helipad to fly to the Amedee lighthouse. There they will find pieces
that will tell them where to go next, which will be at a coral atoll where
they'll find their last directions. Time is still ticking and every second costs
them a dollar. They're down to $18,885 at the moment.
CC
Shaun:"When I heard we were losing a dollar a second I thought
it was a bit rough considering what we had to do."
The pieces are at the top
of the lighthouse, which is as high as a 15 story building. The rules say they
all have to go up there. Nathan goes first, followed by Shaun and
then Petrina, who quickly passes Shaun on the stairs.
CC
Shaun:"I knew it would take me a bit longer to get to the top
than the other two. I felt as if I was wasting somebody's money."
Nathan:"Shaun was complaining the whole time about getting up
those stairs and so was Petrina and I didn't care and thought just get up those
stairs."
Shaun:"Each step was getting harder and harder and we were
slowing down, which meant that we lost more time and thus more money."
Nathan
and Petrina make it to the top first. But they don't see the jigsaw
puzzles and run around in circles on top of the lighthouse. When Shaun
arrives, he finds the pieces. And now they have to go down again. They left the
board with the previews few jigsaw puzzles on a log near the helicopter. They
run back and put the jigsaw together. Nathan and Petrina are the
only ones bothering with the jigsaw. Shaun is lying on the ground behind
them. Nathan:"Is Shaun even awake or what?"
CC
Petrina:"Nathan said something about Shaun being asleep, because
he wasn't very active in working on the puzzle and then after a while Shaun said
'Oh Petrina, you're sitting on some."
She's sitting on some
jigsaw pieces and Shaun tells her about it.
CC
Petrina:"I'm sure he knew way before I did that I was sitting on
jigsaw pieces. I had no idea."
Nathan
moves pieces aside. Petrina seems to get agitated:"Can you
just... not take over please?"
They finally find out they need to go to the coral atoll. There, submerged
below the water, they will find their final directions. It's taken them an hour
and 23 minutes to get this far and they have about $15,000 left.
CC
Shaun:"Knowing that a dollar was going away every second... it's
an awful feeling really, because you haven't got a clock yourself to determine
whether or not you're doing well or you need to speed up. It's an awful feeling
to get back and only win 2 dollars or something."
They finish the entire
jigsaw in the helicopter and have a complete map. The clues they will find at
the atoll will be crosshairs which will tell them where to go.
The helicopter lands on a narrow part of the atoll, which is surrounded by very
blue water and looks beautiful.
CC
Nathan:"We arrived at the atoll and were all blown away by its
beauty and were amazed that we were there. We were so overwhelmed we almost
forgot about our task for a second."
They run out the
helicopter. Nathan is carrying the jigsaw board. They run to a branch
that's stuck in the sand. On it are diving masks. Nathan takes one and Petrina
takes the other. They each run to a buoy on either side of the atoll. The
crosshairs for the map are on two sheets of Perspex (hard see-through plastic
boards). Petrina finds one at the buoy. The other sheet is on the other
buoy. Petrina brings her sheet in, but Nathan is still at the
buoy. They yell at him to ask what he's found and to bring it in. He comes back
eventually, but did waste several seconds/dollars because he hesitated a while
to come back.
The crossing of the two lines on the sheets tell them to go to the meridien
hotel at the
Ten minutes later, they arrive at the hotel, but the time will stop only when
they deliver the completed jigsaw puzzle.
CC
Shaun:"When we flew over the resort where the lines met, we saw
Grant (= the host) lying by the pool. So we knew where he was and got the
chopper down as close as possible and ran for him."
They all arrive and the
host asks them to show the jigsaw puzzle. However, with all the running, several
pieces of the puzzle have fallen out. They have to get the persplex sheets of it
and complete the puzzle again and put the sheets back on. Time stops! It took
them 8650 seconds. So they win $11,350, which is rounded up to $12,000! And they
have made it to the
CC
Shaun:"There hasn't been one thing that hasn't been a new
experience for me.... just flying over the islands with that chopper was
amazing. The clarity of the water, the colour of the sand, it was like salt.
Absolutely amazing. So... this is it. Everything I've worked for up until now
has paid off. Hopefully it's gonna pay off tomorrow."
Petrina:"I don't know that I could ever have imagined getting
this far and what it would feel like. There's only three of us and one of those
boys is The Mole."
Nathan:"I couldn't regret one moment. Even if I don't win and
don't get the money... I'll be crushed, brutally crushed, but better to try than
not trying at all. And think of the people that I've beaten to get here."
Time for their very last
assignment: a
The assignment is called: The Rhyming Slang Challenge. There is $10,000 inside a
safe. To open it, they need a 4 digit code. The clues will reveal the code. Each
code is in rhyming slang. They get 20 minutes for the challenge. If they get
stuck during the challenge, they can buy a clue for $1,000. The challenge
starts...
CLUE 1
To find your BREAD AND HONEY, you'll need to have a PORKY PIE, in
the KIPPERS AND HADDOCKS next door. Only then can you take a CAPTAIN
COOK for the SCARE AND FRIGHT.
They try to figure it out.
Bread and honey is 'money', Petrina thinks kippers and haddocks
means 'hammocks'. Captain cook means 'look'. They try to find out what
the last thing means. Petrina:"Might... kite? Or maybe
light!"
The combination for the safe can only be seen using ultraviolet light. And
the rhyming slang clue tells them that to turn it on, they have to lie in the
hammock. But it takes them a while to figure that out. Petrina and Nathan
are lying in the 2 hammocks and Shaun is standing next to them. They all
look at several lights around them (the challenge is played at the hotel, so
there are several lights).
CC
Petrina:"We thought that from the hammocks we would be able to
see the particular light that might have the next clue."
Nathan:"I was lying in the hammock and there wasn't a light
in front of me, so I thought I was laying the wrong way. Shaun could have
pointed it out earlier, but he didn't."
Shaun
goes inside the hotel (the hotel consists of several cabins and small bungalows)
and looks around. The other two get out of their hammocks too and go inside,
causing the ultraviolet light in the garden to go out.
They have 20 minutes to solve the entire challenge, but after 4 minutes still
haven't solved the first clue. They're looking at all the lights inside the
cabins. They take a look at the clue again and doubt whether the word they're
looking for is indeed 'light'. Nathan and Petrina lie down again
and look around. Then Petrina spots a light in the garden and wonders
whether that's it. The light is on a table and their first combination number is
written in invisible ink on that table. They all run to the light, but now
there's no one in the hammocks, so the light goes out.
They have used up 7 minutes already and the host reminds them they can buy
clues. They do so, which costs $1,000. The host reads the first clue again and
explains it a bit:
To find your BREAD AND HONEY, you'll need to be PORKY PIE-ING, in
the KIPPERS AND HADDOCKS next door.
Host:"One of you looks, while the others PORKY PIE."
Nathan and Petrina lie down again and Shaun runs to the
light on the table. He yells he reads something and the other two jump up and
want to run towards him, but then the light goes out again. Shaun tells
them to lie down again and they finally understand! Number 3 is on the table.
That's one of the numbers of the safe's code.
CLUE 2
You're getting closer to the BANGERS AND MASH. To get even closer, take a
BUTCHER'S HOOK Inside your BAGS OF FRUIT. What you need is on your
JILL AND JACK.
They think that the next
number is on the BACK of their SUITS. They look, but don't see anything, but
then realize that it's probably visible with the blacklight too. It's only
written on one of their suits. Shaun takes a look while the others lie
down, but can't see anything. Petrina takes her suit off (they're all
wearing bathing suits underneath) and takes a look. She finds the number 6
CLUE 3
This one's LEMON SQUEEZY. On the PENNY AND POUND you'll find some
Their next number is lying
on the ground at a nearby bowling court (lawn bowling aka petanque). But there's
a trick: the number isn't actually written on a nearby bowl, but on a coconut
which is lying on the bowling court.
Petrina counts the number off bowls. It's 11 and the jack. Nathan
suggests keeping them under the blacklight. Shaun and Petrina lie
in the hammocks while Nathan checks the bowls. Time is still ticking and
they waste a minute checking the lawn bowls. Then Nathan finally sees the
coconut and checks it. Number 5 is on it.
The final number is hidden
in the bedroom next door.
CLUE 4
You'll need to use your TRAMS AND TRAINS for this one. In the CAT AND
MOUSE next door you'll find a black RING-A-DING. But it's the TROUBLE
AND STRIFE you actually need.
They go inside and Shaun
quickly finds a chess game. The black RING-A-DING is the black king and
they need his TROUBLE AND STRIFE... his wife. Shaun runs to the
light with the black queen while the others lie down. Shaun finds a 6 on
it. They now have all numbers, but still need the correct order.
CLUE 5
For your final SCOOBY DOO, there are four ARISTOTLES at the bottom
of the HORSE AND MULE. When you find them, think of the DOG AND BONE.
At the bottom of the pool,
there are four small bottles, but finding them won't be easy. As soon as there
are any ripples on the surface, it's impossible to se the bottles. They run to
the pool and take their suits off. Petrina has it off first and jumps in
the pool. Petrina:"Where is it, I can't see it!"
Nathan points at one and he's taken his suit off too. Shaun
however is still wearing his.
CC
Petrina:"Shaun was just watching Nathan and me to dive in and I
was asking them where the bottles were, because I just couldn't see them."
Shaun:"The bottle was right below her and she's saying she
couldn't get it. I had suspicions about Nathan when he said he couldn't see
anything."
Nathan:"Those bottles were impossible to see in that
water."
Shaun:"It wasn't a matter of being able to see things, it was
a matter of being able to wanting to find them, I think."

They have all bottles and now have to figure out the order of
the numbers they found. There's nothing on the bottles, so they check it under
the blacklight again. Each has a letter on it and it forms the word 'Mole'. The
clue now tells them to think of the DOG AND BONE. The numbers they have are 3,
6, 5 and 6. MOLE spelled out on a phone pad will give them the correct order. Petrina
runs inside to the phone and finds the correct order. They run to the safe and
enter the code. The safe opens! They lost $1,000 because they bought a clue
though. So if they're in time, they win $9,000. They took... 18 minutes 26
seconds, so they succeed!
The kitty contains $104,000 and one of them will win it.
CC
Nathan:"$104,000... that's how much one of us lucky people will
take home."
Petrina:"I just can't believe that I'm so close too so much
money and very soon I'll know if that's mine or not!"
Shaun:"It's about an hour till we find out who will be The
Mole, who's going home with the money and who will leave with nothing."
Final
Each contestant is taken to a cabin where they will fill out the
questionnaire. In the end the winner's cabin will be unlocked....
CC
Shaun:"Everything I've done up until now means nothing. Tonight
is it. The money. That's all anyone's here for. So hopefully I go home with
it."
Nathan:"50-50 of taking home the money. I don't think I'll
ever have this opportunity in my life again."
Petrina:"I don't know, I guess I feel nervous and I'm ready
to know what my fate in The Mole is."
There are 10 questions in the questionnaire and they're all
about previous episodes.
1) Episode one: Where in Sydney did The Mole start?
2) Episode two: Whose dossier did The Mole have?
3) Episode three: Where was The Mole in the jigsaw photo? (on the boat where the
girls had to dive up jigsaw pieces)
4) Episode four: Which assignment did The Mole do?
5) Episode five: When did The Mole walk the plank?
6) Episode six: When did The Mole swim for a bag?
7) Episode eight: When did The Mole abseil down the dam?
8) Episode nine: What sport did The Mole play?
9) In this episode: What clue did The Mole find?
10) Who is The Mole?
Suspicious in this episode
Shaun wastes
time climbing up the stairs.
Petrina sits on jigsaw pieces.
Nathan carries the jigsaw board and some of the pieces fall out and get
mixed up.
It took them all a long time until they found the blacklight.
Suspicions

Shaun:"Nathan is ideal for The Mole, because every time we do a
task he's eager to get it started. For a person as fit as him, he's failed at so
many tasks is just not on."
Petrina:"He's very energetic and a go-getter who's out there
doing everything. But yet he never comes up with the goods."
Nathan was the only one to fall off the plank...
CC
Shaun:"Nathan got up there and then everything turned to jelly
basically. Why he walked a few feet and then fall off? It's got to be
sabotage."
In three different challenges it was Nathan who risked
the team's winning.
Flashback:
In the 'Catch-the-ball challenge', the host asks if they give up and take half
the money. Nathan is standing under the ball and tells them they go
through with the challenge and don't quit.
In the charades challenge where they had to dig up coffins and see if there's
any money in it, the host suggest to take less money or to continue and see if
the money is in the last coffin. Nathan votes to go on with it.
In the parking lot challenge, where they first got an easy task of getting the
red car out, they could gamble to play the second puzzle and win more money, or
lose the money they just won. Nathan is first to vote to continue.
In total, this cost the group $40,000.
CC
Petrina:"He always had this energy of being so clear that we
could do it. 'Yep the money is in the coffin! Yep we'll manage to catch the
ball! Yep we can do the car puzzle!' but we didn't..."

Nathan:"On thing I find about Petrina is she always puts up an
act whenever she wants to put on a different face. always be happy when everyone
else is not."
Shaun:"She's the ideal person to be The Mole because she's
very laid-back and sorta hasn't got a care in the world."
In the relative-reunion, Petrina had said her father
wouldn't parachute. But he did and it cost the team $10,000.
CC
Nathan:"I'm sure she knew the correct answer, but did she give
the correct answer? No, she lost us the money."
In episode 5, Petrina was eliminated, but she was offered a
life-line to come back into the game and it cost the team $50,000.
CC
Shaun:"$50,000 is a lot of money and for a Mole to take that
amount of money is just a dream. And she's done it!"

Petrina:"I think Shaun is the perfect Mole because he's the most
unlikely Mole. Something about his nature is very easy to warm to and I think
that makes him a great Mole because I don't think you want to suspect somebody
that you like o easily."
Nathan:"He cried when one of his good mates got eliminated (When
Cam was eliminated the first time, Shaun cried) and it's unbelievable
that someone can put up that kind of face and still at the end of the day be the
one who's sabotaging everything."
At the cemetery, it was Shaun who dug up the wrong grave.
It cost them $10,000.
Petrina:"We had decided that we would decide together which grave
to dig and Shaun just stuck his shovel in Ben Affleck's grave before we even
talked about it and I was like 'Hang on a minute!' but by that stage it was
already too late."
In the ball challenge, he made no attempt to wait for the ball
to drop and they lost $20,000.
Nathan:"He just cared about his sleep, he didn't care about
catching the ball and winning the money. I thought he was with us, but there he
was against us."

They finish the questionnaires and the results are known. They have to stand and move to the door. One of the doors will unlock: the winner's door. Find out who is the winner, who is The Mole and who will go home empty-handed. Then scroll down to find out how The Mole sabotaged the challenges.
So Petrina is The
Mole. How did she do it? She sabotaged nearly every assignment!

airplane but didn't remember her number and so she couldn't open the safe. But
let's get back to the combination number she was given:
Flashback It's Petrina's turn. As she gets to the edge, she screams "I
don't know if I can! I don't know if I can!!!" And she screams a few
times whilst the man is yelling out her number: 5636
It's a familiar
number. The very first puzzle gave it away.
Flashback
'Solve the puzzle to open the safe

MOLE = ????'
They enter another code, but it's wrong again. Time's up and a mobile rings
nearby. They find it and Alison answers. They missed out on the money.
The host tells them the combination is 6653.
And this episode, the
numbers came back again:
Flashback The numbers they have are 3, 6, 5 and 6. MOLE spelled out on a
phone pad will give them the correct order. Petrina runs inside to the
phone and finds the correct order.
CC
Petrina:"A
few people figured out the combination with the phone keypad. But they never
worked out what mine was and never worked out the Mole combination and linked it
to me. So that was lucky, otherwise it would have been over already!"

On the wires
at the dam, Petrina's racing heart rate lost them the assignment.
CC
Petrina:"The dam highwire was my first real sneaky sabotage. I
had to do something in front of everyone that had a risk involved. The challenge
to me was keeping my heart rate up as high as possible, in order to waste as
much time as possible. My stomach was going in and out the whole time, that's
how I kept my heart rate up. It was perfect! It totally set up

In the car
park puzzle, Petrina deliberately appeared to be the hero.
Flashback Petrina solves the puzzle and they can get the car out in
less than 12 minutes. The navigators are suspicious. They got an hour to do it
and it's over already.
But it was a con! They
were then offered a second puzzle, double or nothing.
CC
Petrina:"My quickly solving the first puzzle had people thinking
the second one would be just as easy and I knew that it was much more
difficult."
It was double or nothing.
And they won nothing...
In the hostage assignment, Petrina knew that Josh was being held in a
lighthouse.
Flashback Petrina asks the host what form of transportation they get
and he says it's a helicopter. Petrina:"Well then let's go to the
helicopter and say..."
CC
Petrina:"I
knew we would need more than just the lighthouse to get there, so I was 'Great,
let's go to the helicopter!' "
Flashback When they tell the helicopter pilot "Take us to the
lighthouse!" he asks:"Which one?"
CC
Petrina:"All
the while, I knew that we would have to go back again. So that was a perfect
waste of time."
With all the running
around, they wasted time and lost the challenge. But during the running, Petrina
came close to giving it all away that she's The Mole! We see a confession cam of
that night:
CC
Petrina (showing a piece of paper):"I get this note with
instructions each time and I sneakily read it on my own on the toilet. I got
this note in my undies and as we were running to the helicopter, I felt the
notes falling out of my undies! I was wearing a short denim skirt and the notes
were about to come cascading from underneath it. While I was running, I managed
to get them out from the back and put them in my backpack. And then I was going
paranoid about my backpack, thinking someone would take it and go through it. It
was crazy!"
Episode

Halfway
through the series, none of the contestants suspected Petrina as The
Mole. Especially when she threw them of her scent. First, she refused an
exemption.
Flashback Petrina is doubting... the host asks her for the answer and
starts counting down from 5... 4... 3... 2... Petrina:"I'll keep
the money..."
Then she was
eliminated.
CC
Petrina:"I had myself score worst on the questionnaire and be
eliminated."
That night she got offered
a deal to come back for $50,000.
CC
Petrina:"My elimination and comeback was completely planned, I
always knew I would do that. It was perfect! Especially with the girls, they all
were 'She was so upset! She's gonna die now she got eliminated and didn't take
the exemption in the afternoon!' and I was like 'That's true, but I ain't going
nowhere!' So... I always knew I would be back."

The following
day, she deliberately sank her boat.
CC
Petrina:"In the first round I just spent most of the time
hopelessly knocking plugs out."
We can see her pulling
plugs out of the boat! This scene was also in the original episode, so people
could have seen it back then already.
CC
Petrina:"Pull The Plug was hilarious! It was one of the most fun
challenges to sabotage! And afterwards, when the game was almost over, I was
really keen up in front with the paddles and trying to get back to shore."

In this
episode, Shaun found a note in the police van.
CC
Petrina:"My biggest challenge in the police game was the note
that I planted. It was a letter of instructions to the Mole."
flashback
CC
Shaun:"I found a document (shows the letter) regarding
activities that we were supposed to do. It pretty much describes who The Mole
is."
But the note was a hoax!
CC
Petrina:"The note was put up in a way that it had Alison and I
look like we were on to The Mole. So it made it look like one of the boys."
Shaun
eventually worked out that the note was a hoax. The viewers at home too could
have worked it out. Footage was shown of the contestants in the police van and
only Petrina and Kris were sitting on the bench the note was
found. Kris was later eliminated, so the only person who could have
planted the note there, was Petrina.
CC
Petrina:"I pulled the note out of my pocket and chucked it on
the seat. Not directly behind me, but where Kris was sitting. Quite simply, just
put people off my scent. It was a bit dirty, but I think it worked. It kind of
created a bit of confusion for a little while."

In this
episode, Petrina predicted her father wouldn't jump. But he did and it
cost the team $10,000.
CC
Petrina:"I know my dad, there was no way in the world that he
was not jumping out of that plane!"
At the dam, she failed to
collect the memory chip.
CC
Petrina:"I kept on yelling 'OK, one more go, one more go! So I
was being very keen, but not producing the goods. That's pretty much what I've
been doing the whole time: be really keen, but no goods."

In the sports
challenge, the young girl was the cricket champion and Petrina knew it.
CC
Petrina:"The sports challenge was.. just a little bit of
influential decision making."
flashback In the car they see the pictures. There's one woman and they think
she has a water sport. Petrina suggests to let the woman do cricket.
CC
Petrina:"I
knew that she was the cricket champion, so I knew that Shaun had no

Even in this
episode she did some sabotaging. By sitting on the jigsaw pieces, she wasted
some seconds and thus dollars.
And in the final challenge, just after the voice-over explains to the viewers
that the only way to see the bottles in the pool is when the surface of the
water doesn't get broken. Right after that is said, we see Petrina
jumping in quickly. They could no longer see what they were looking for and the
waste of time very nearly cost them the money.
