Australian Mole 4
The Mole: In Paradise
Episode 2

Stace didn't know who The Mole was. She scored lowest and got eliminated. The other nine got on a plane to New Caledonia!

Confession Cam
Kris
:"When Grant told us we were going to New Caledonia it just blew me out of the water!"
Josh:"It was great, wer were going on holiday to a place I had never been. And a couple of people had never travelled! Shaun had never been more than an hour out of his town."
Shaun:"Coming from the country. Going to Sydney, which is a total culture shock and then overseas? Marvelous!"

They are in the airplane and halfway through the flight, the host walks towards them and tells them that in the pocket of the seat in front them there is an iPack which has information on it that can be very important to them. He will collect the iPacks shortly before the end of the flight.
The contestants take the iPacks and every iPack has personal details of one contestant, which switches every 2 seconds. (details such as what car that person has, what star sign, date of birth, etcetera...)
CC
Petrina
:"We all pulled out these iPacks en there was a photo of somebody else and all these details flashing over on the screen. I had Kris's. We all though we would have to remember the details for a test."
Kris:"I thought 'This is going to be easy! It's easy! Look at it, read it, learn it!' I thought I got it and would remember all of it."
Cam:"I had Nikki. It had her date of birth and then it went bang! On to the next one which was occupation, then bang! another one former occupation, partner's name, partner's star sign, it just kept on flicking through the screen."
Josh:"I sneakily looked aside to see which contestant the person next to me had and then looked forward to see who the people in front of me had and then I stretched my arms to look at the contestants behind me."
Nikki:"I was like 'Oh my gosh, we really got to remember this.' so I was running it through my mind and was going over and over and over."
Nathan:"Greg had mine and I had his and I asked him to help each other out and he was a bit offensive about it. so I was like 'OK... that was a bit strange' "

Remembering the information they get is only part of the assignment. The following morning they face the real test about team work! Have they kept the information to themselves or have they worked as a team and shared the information?

Day 2 - New Caledonia
The contestants wake up in sunny New Caledonia and are taken to a small island where they have lunch. But they do think something else is going on. During lunch, the host tells them he has a challenge for them. He will ask each contestant a question. If they answer correctly in five seconds, $1,000 will be added to the kitty. However, if they fail, $2,000 will be taken from the kitty!
CC
Greg
:"We were ready for the questions! We knew that we were going to score 100 %!"

The first question is for Nathan, who (when the host asks him) says he's feeling confident...
Question: How old is Kris's daughter?
Nathan looks shocked "I never had her iPack!" Time's up when he guesses 14. It's wrong. $2,000 taken from the kitty! Kris has to say the answer now:"I don't have a daughter."

CC
Cam
:"When Grant started the challenge, I wasn't surprised, I was waiting for it. I had no problems, I knew my stuff back to front!"
It's Cam's turn. Question: What sign of the Zodiac is Josh?
Cam guesses Aquarius, but it's Taurus. - $2,000.

Josh's question: When was Cam born? He guesses 1981. But that's incorrect. Cam was born in 1977.
CC
Josh
:"Most of us were asked questions of people's dossiers that we didn't receive. I received Shaun's dossier and was asked a question about Cam."

Greg's turn. Question: What's the name of Petrina's sister?
He guesses Jackie. But Petrina doesn't even have a sister! Wrong again!

Alison. Question: What was Shaun's former occupation?
She says gun shooter, but that's wrong again.

Kris is up now. Question: What make and colour is Nathan's car?
She thinks it's a red Corolla, but in fact it's a silver Primera (or something).

Nikki. Queston: Where does Greg live?
She bursts out laughing and guesses Melbourne, but that's wrong. He lives at Craigeburn, VIC.
CC
Nikki
:"I'll tell you why I didn't share, because when I was looking at the iPack Josh had (note: in the airplane, she was sitting next to Josh) he kept turning it the other side, so I couldn't look at it." (We see footage of it)

Shaun. Question: Name Alison's three brothers.
He doesn't give any answer within the 5 seconds, so it's wrong. It was Richard, Marty and Paul...
CC
Petrina
:"When Shaun was asked a question about Alison, it was suspicious to me that he didn't get it, because he was the only one who was asked a question about the person he was given the information of! We even went through it on the plane and I was asking hi and he knew them last night on the plane."

Petrina is the last one. Everyone gave a wrong answer already and lost money. It's up to Petrina to save the little bit of dignity for the group, otherwise, this might be the most humiliating defeat in Mole history!
Question: When was Nikki born?
Petrina looks at Nikki:"She's 19... uhm...." but time's up... In only two minutes, the team lost $18,000!! Half the prize money they had so far.
CC
Cam
:"(laughing) Everybody mucked up! I don't know who did it on purpose and who didn't. I know I didn't!"
Petrina:"We were totally focused on ourselves and not thinking about the way to succeed the best that we can is to work together as a team."
Shaun:"Teamwork's a big problem at the moment. No one wants to share anything. I don't know if it's greed or we're just being... pains. Not wanting anyone to know anything else."

They drive to a dam for the next challenge: going over highwires on a dam, wearing heart rate monitors. All have to go down a ladder, traverse the gap over the wires and go back up the ladder again to go back to the group to tag the next contestant. Their heart beat can't go over 160 or they have to stop and wait till it goes down again. When they arrive, they don't know what they will have to do yet. They're amazed at the height of the dam.
If they think they are stuck, they can go back and will get a 10 minute penalty. The Challenge is worth $10,000. They all have to do it within one hour!

Cam goes first. He's a fireman, so it shouldn't be such a problem for him. He steadily walks towards the ladder and goes down. His heart doesn't go over 110 until he gets on the wires, where it is about 123.
CC
Josh
:"Seeing that our heart rates were monitored.. clearly there's two factors that will affect your heart rate. One is fitness and the other is adrenaline."
Nikki:"We established that the best way to do it would be to just be easy instead of running and trying to have a fast time."
Cam:"Height is a funny thing. It's all in your head. If you step on the wire, whether it's one meter or 100 meters above the ground, it's all the same. It's all in your head."
Josh:"Cam is a fireman. He pressumably does this stuff for a living. I thought it would be something he'd find fairly easy and I was keen he was going first so I could see how it went and how long it would take."

Cam reaches the other side and goes up the ladder again slowly and tags the next contestant.
CC
Alison
:"Cam was mazing! He just breezed through it in 4 minutes or something. I don't think his heart rate even went above 160 once."

Nikki is next. She's excited to go, but the excitement also makes her heart rate go up, so she tries to be calm. On the wires, her heart rate goes up to 147, but she makes it without stopping.
CC
Josh
:"She clearly had no troubles with it and enjoyed it. And after that... it all went a bit downhill..."

It's Josh's turn. Whilst walking towards the ladder to go down the dam to the platform to get on the high wires, his heart rate is already up to 146.
CC
Nikki
:"Before he even walked up the plank his heart rate was flying. And we were like 'Uh-oh, something's going to happen."

Josh is on the ladder going down and not even on the highwires, but he has to stop already, because his heart rate is up to 180! He's wasting valuable minutes, waiting for his heart rate to go down. Once on the wires, it goes over 160 again and he has to stop once more.
CC
Josh
:"Josh told us he was a triathlete or runner. His heart rate went over andI thought... for a triathlete that was a bit strange."
Nikki:"Josh was a bit suspicious. He always goes on about how healthy he is, but his heart rate as flying. Every step he took he had to wait."

The stopping costs the team more than 2 minutes. But his heart rate was nothing compared to that of Petrina. She also has to stop on the ladder.
CC
Nikki
:"I knew Petrina's heart rate was going to jump because after seeing her at the skydiving whe nshe had to jump, she was going whiter and whiter. So I thought this is really going to test her heart rate!"

They have 38 minutes left and Petrina was already stopped four times just going down the ladder! She reaches the wire and gets on, but has to stop. She tries to get her heart rate down for over a minute, wasting valuable time!
CC
Petrina
:"The thing that scared me was... I'm not so tall. So the wires were quite difficult for me to reach. Because I was reaching up, I got wobbly on my legs. So I guess that was racing my heart up."

The team has to make a decision. Shall they wait or pull her out and get a 10 minute penalty? Still five people have to get across in 35 minutes. Cam decides to pull Petrina out and get the 10 minutes penalty. Five people now only have 25 minutes left.
CC
Petrina
:"I would have one over in less than ten minutes! I was already 2 thirds of the way over. And even if I did stop and start and stop and start, who cares? I still would have made it through in less than ten minutes!"

Nathan is next. He's doing well, although he has to wait a short amount of time. Greg is next and he also gets over easy. So does Alison. Shaun is next and when he's on the wires, it starts shaking, which sends his heart rate above 160... They have 7 and a half minutes left with Kris still to go. Valuable seconds are ticking away. He makes it though and tags Kris, the last person who has 6 minutes to do her part.
CC
Kris
:"I'm not good at all with heights. Absolutely terrified."

She gets on the ladder and has to stop. Five minutes and 12 seconds left.... It takes her 2 minutes to get to the wire. She could still make it. But she has to get over the railing to step on the wire.
CC
Kris
:"The scry thing was because I have short legs... I couldn't reach the wire."

She's standing on the railing and has to reach her foot out to step on the wire, but she has difficulties doing so. After two minutes of hesitation she finally gets onthe wire, but her heart is over 180. And time's up! Challenge failed! Another $10,000 goes begging.
CC
Nathan
:"I've alwaysstuck with Kris from the start. She has acting experience, she's been on tv. She can put on a straight face whenever she has to. Today I thought she was pretty brave, but I don't know if that was her or wht her other agendas are."
Kris:" lot of people are telling lies and try to put up smoke screens and mirrors.Going from the feelings I have I still have Josh up my list."
Josh:"Two things bother me about Cam. One: suddenly he's everyone's friend, showing everyone how to do the highwires and how to move you hands, even to me, which I didn't think I needed help for. And when Petrina was on the wire he led the charge in deciding to pull Petrina out."

So far, they haven't won anything this episode. In fact, they lost $18,000 in the first challenge!

Day 3
The contestants go to a park where there's a very big crossword puzzle!
CC
Josh
:"I am the absolute worst crossword puzzler. I hate word games of any kind!"

The clues for the crossword puzzle is in a seperate location. Three pairs have to go to that location on the back of a Harley Davidson! Three contestants stay behind at the crossword puzzle. They have to solve it within 20 minutes to win $10,000. If they want a hint, it will cost them $1,000 a hint.
The three contestants that stay behind are:

Cam                           Nikki                        Shaun

They have to solve the clues and complete the crossword.
The others go in pairs to the three different locations to solve riddles to earn a clue for the crossword puzzle. No one knows where in the puzzle the word has to go. The three pairs are:

Alison and Petrina

Nathan and Kris

Josh and Greg

CC
Kris
:"When we turned up there was a policeman waiting there, with a big board with questions on it."

Question 1
Four capital cities in Europe start and end with the same letter. Name two.

Most pairs (which are separated from each other) go through every European capital city such as Madrid, Berlin... but they don't start and end with the same letter. Petrina and Alison are trying to come up with the capital city of Poland, but don't recall it yet.
Kris
doesn't have a clue and even says Alabama at one point. She decides to phone the host for the answer: Oslo, Warsaw, Andoraa-Labella and Ankarra. That cost them $1,000 but now they do have the clue for the puzzle: Secret Saboteur. Nathan calls the Nikki to tell the clue. They figure out it's 'mole', wich is correct, but they still have to find out where in the crossword puzzle the word has to be put.
Nathan and Kris can already move on to the next question.
Question 2
Below you will find fifteen well known five letter words, with only their endings remaining. Fill in the blanks.
..lta            ..ybe            ..alp
..yss           ..dex            ..era
..pty           ..fth              ..njo
..dth           ..nda            ..eue
..day          ..aph            ..xty

The other two pairs are still trying to solve the first question. Petrina and Alison couldn't come up with Poland's capital city at first, which would have been correct (Warsaw). Petrina finds Ankarra and then Alison does remember Warsaw! So they have the correct answer which gives them the next clue: U.S. Intelligence
Petrina calls it over to Shaun. The three in the park figure out the answer is CIA. Two words are completed and they have 14 minutes to go.
Finally, Greg and Josh also find two capital cities: Oslo and Warsaw. They have the clue 'Problem Solver'. Greg doesn't know which button to press to call the other three, so Josh presses it for him, wasting a few seconds. Greg tells the clue to Shaun and when they hang up, Nathan and Kris have already found the next clue and call it in:'Doctor Evil tried to steal it'. Shaun knows it's mojo (Austin's mojo).
They need six more words to complete the crossword and have 12 minutes, 40 seconds left.

Josh and Greg still have to solve question two. After three minutes they have 14 of the 15 words and they can't find the '..lta' word. They call the host for the answer, which costs $1,000. The answer is 'delta'.
CC
Josh
:"I had to phone back to get a clue, knew I'd lose $1,000. And it was delta! Obviously common somewhere but not for me."

Alison and Petrina only find 11 out of the 15 words and also call the host. Another $1,000 for the answer. They didn't have '..aph' (graph) '..era' (opera) '..njo' (banjo) and '..eue' (queue). The clue they get is 'Australian Spooks, which they call to Shaun.

All of the pairs now start the last question:
Question 3
How do you cut a square cake into eight equal pieces using only three straight cuts? You can not move the pieces as you cut the cake.
CC
Kris
:"Nathan was going 'Go on Kris, you're a girl! You shut know how to cut it!' "

She finds the answer! First you make two cuts, which form a cross in the middle of the cake and then you cut the whole cake from the side, creating equal pieces. The clue they get is: Encryption. They call Shaun and tell him. He figures out it's 'code'.
The other pairs haven't found it yet. They draw it on their hands or in the sand. Finally, Greg finds the answer, getting the clue 'What colour was Dylan's hair in Charlie's Angels?'. Shaun and Cam don't know and think it was blonde, but then Nikki tells them:"No she wasn't, she was red!"
CC
Cam
:"Nikki knew that her hair was red. We couldn't find the spot for the clue, because there were a couple of three letter words. So we sort of forgot about it, got distracted and went on to the next question."

Petrina meanwhile finds the answer for the cake too and calls Shaun: 'They don't spy in England'
Nikki writes it down on the board. She nor Shaun know the answer. Cam thinks it's MI5.
They've had all 9 clues phoned in, but they're still missing two words. They have 90 seconds left and if they do'nt finish the crossword, they won't win any money.

Shaun thinks it's a good idea to spend money on the bigger word and then they can figure out what the small word might be. The big word was the answer to 'Problem Solver', which is 'enigma', a world war 2 code cracker. They quickly put the letters in place, but it cost them $1,000 for asking the answer. They still need the top left word of three letters which has an E in the middle (.E.)
Cam:"If we don't get this in time, we don't have anything at all!"
Shaun:"But we'll lose another $1,000 if we buy it!"
The host tells them the uzzle needs to be completed to win money. Cam:"I want the answer!" Nikki:"Wait!"
CC
Nikki
:"He was like 'I don't care, I want to buy the question!' And I wanted to talk about it first, because there was three of us there. And he said 'No I've decided I want this and that's how it's going to be!"

Cam:"We don't have time to discuss this guys, if buy the answer, we don't have the clue. It costs us $2,000 to buy the answer and it costs $1,000 to get the clue, if we get the clue we might be able to find the answer ourselves and save $1,000. We need to decide right now, we've got no time to think about it! Can we please have the clue?!"
The host gives them the clue, which costs $1,000. The clue is: 'What colour was Dylan's hair in Charlie's Angels?'
They now remember they already had that clue and hurry to put the R and the D in the crossword puzzle. They just wasted $1,000 for a clue they already had received!
CC
Alison
:"For some reason, Cam didn't hear Nikki saying red. Nikki didn't remember saying red and Shaun didn't remember getting the phone call. Which is very weird!"
Shaun:"I was on the phone. I had just read it out to Nikki, who was going to write it down and the phone rang again straight after, so I didn't get to write it down and Nikki started writing the next question down, so it was just forgotten."
Alison:"It cost us $1,000 which is very suspicious."

They managed to solve the crossword with just a few seconds left, but between them, they spent $6,000 buying hints! The host goes over what the group in the park (Cam, Shaun and Nikki) bought. First they bought a clue they already had: 'Australian Spooks' which was 'Asio'. Then they bought the answer to 'Problem Solver', which was 'enigma'. The third request was for the clue to the red-answer. The clue was 'What colour was Dylan's hair in Charlie's Angels?'. The host then asks if anyone had already called that in? Yes, Josh and Greg did. So they wasted money for nothing.
But it's not over yet! They also have one wrong answer. MI6 was the service that does not spy in England. they had MI5, which is the domestic service. So in total it cost $7,000 and they only win $3,000. They now only have $21,000 left. $15,000 less than last episode!
CC
Nathan
:"My suspect from the start has always been Kris. She really hasn't won us any money from the start. she didn't contribute much at all. Maybe she did help out with the questions todat, but the first question she didn't get. she shoulc have gotten that."
Greg:"Josh has travelled the world, he's bright and intelligent. The capital cities of the world was something he should know. I was surprised that I got them and he didn't!"
Kris:"Cam was out there. Cam made decisions without consulting his other two team members. It was his call and we lost money and quite a few of the contestants were upset with Cam's performance today."

Suspicions
Nikki
:"I'm suspecting Cam for the Mole. After we finished our crossword puzzle today, I turned around to Shaun and we both thought Cam was jeopardizing the challenge."
Shaun:"Josh is too upfront I think and that's making me think he's The Mole."
Josh:"I think Alison is a bit of a dark horse. She has the motive, the desire. I think she's on to it. She's very very bright."
Alison:"Greg is totally suspicious! When I speak to him I just see something in his eyes."
Kris:"I have a question mark on Cam and on Alison. since the days emerge, different personalities emerge... different lies. It's amazing what you pick up when you stand and listen."

Suspicious in this episode
Greg
didn't want anyone to see the information he got on his iPack.
No one answered their question correctly, not even Shaun who got a question from the iPack he was given!
Josh, Petrina and Kris waste valuable time on the highwires.
Cam decides to pull Petrina off the wires and get a 10 minute time penalty, even though she thinks she could have made it over in less than 10 minutes.
Every pair bought the answer for a question.
Cam, Nikki and Shaun forgot all about the Charlie's Angels question and Cam decided to buy the clue again, wasting money on something they already had!

Elimination
CC
Josh:"I've found The Mole. I know who it is. I wasn't that far off in the first episode, but now I'm absolutely sure who The Mole is."
Nikki:"I don't want to go tonight."
Shaun:"There's a possibility I'll be eliminated tonight... I hope not. I might also stay and go to the end."

There's a draw tonight! Two contestants scored equal lowest scores. So the slower one of them will be eliminated tonight!
