| self-consciously pop songs of our time which have transcended mere big hit status to become part of social tradition. In a spangly pink stetson. Twain's appeal is that of the glamorous girl next door, but there are a few things which separate her from lesser mortals. Her multi-million-selling albums. Her technically impressive and hugely expensive in-the-round stage set-up. Her talent for singing and signing autographs at the same time. The way she teams a vest top and hockey boots with diamant jewellery. Her personal air-conditioning system which gently wafts through her freshly Silvikrined mane of hair. But, in many ways, Twain is just like you and me. She enjoys a laugh with her buddies and, to that end, she has hired the perkiest backing band ever to fit round a circular stage. They hopped up to join Twain on her central plateau; she leapt down to skirt the perimeter of the stage, on a perpetual tour of duty. There were extended hands to touch, programmes to sign, toys to receive and babies to kiss. Boy, did Shania work that hall.... It was really a great show and would love to go again. SHANIA TWAIN came to Scotland last night and turned the great soul-less hall of the SECC into a palace of pleasure and spectacle for the evening. And so she should have. This is, after all, a world tour built for stadium events and a gig with a flamboyant nine-piece band to enhance and augment the voice and antics of the wee lassie from Ontario with the funny voice. In terms of theatre and on-stage spectacle, the Up Tour is well named. As the lights dimmed, Shanias shadow appeared huge in the centre of the stage, back arched and microphone held to her up-turned lips, ready to belt out Man, I Feel Like a Woman. Except that she wasnt there at all. But the "surprise" opening wasnt a sleight of hand after all because here she came, jogging up to the stage in a salmon pink top, a fashionable amount of black bra revealed at the back and a serious amount of rhinestone-cowgirl jewellery studding her black trousers. And from there on in, she kept up the pace. Constantly prowling the edge of the stage, getting down with the band, making sure that it all went smoothly as the up-tempo rocking of Honey Im Home blended into the slower, Cest la Vie. She stands in cascades of fireworks and constantly engages with her audience. Indeed, Shania is one performer who goes over and above what is necessary for her fans. Without pausing to think, she was signing autographs in mid-song, patting up-held hands and never even missing a note. And when she returns to the stage for the encores in a Scotland football shirt, the calculated skill of it all simply comes into focus. The fans were out in force for this sell-out leg of the sassy country lady's Up! World Tour. Posses of fortysomething couples and girls' night-outs turned out to sway, toe-tap and clap their way through the country gal turned pop diva's two-hour set. As expected, there were many a stetson-and-spangles ensembles in the 9000-strong audience. The Grammy-winning 38-year-old Canadian, whose turning point came with the launch of her third album, Come on Over, in 1998, is now the biggest-selling female artist of all time, with record sales notching more than 60 million. Dressed in backless hot pink vest, diamant-studded three-quarter length trousers, white boxer's boots and dripping with sparkly costume jewellery, the outfit was a lot cheaper than the 48 ticket price. However, the set was strong, driven by a multi-talented nine-piece band pseudo-rockers clad in ripped denim, chains, zips and spiky hair. The show was focused on a huge circular centre stage and aided by four large video screens, fireworks and oodles of confetti to shower the crowds.Fans were entertained with party favourites such as Man! I Feel Like A Woman, Don't Be Stupid and That Don't Impress me Much, as well as more recent hits Up!, I'm Gonna Get You Good and Ka-Ching. If Shania had spent less time bent over signing autographs we might even have made out the lyrics and seen more of her face. For the obligatory encore, she closed with You're Still the One, sporting a Scotland football shirt. Rumours a denim-clad Berti Vogts was seen later waiting forlornly outside her dressing room are unconfirmed. The new Shania single in the UK "Shes Not Just A Pretty Face" is released on March 29th and will feature a poster of Shania's face made up of the first 1,000 fans who send in a J-Peg or scanned Photograph of themselves to [email protected] Photo's cannot exceed 5mb. The closing date is Tuesday March 9th. If you are have already seen Shania in concert here in the UK you will already be aware of this advertisment to promote the single as Fliers are handed out for it at the end of the show. SO you want fireworks? Hell, Shania Twain gave us enough pyrotechnics to light up a dozen Hogmanays. You want autographs? Constantly moving around the massive circular stage, Shania s-m-i-l-e-d, pressed the flesh and scrawled hundreds. You want hits? That goes without saying from an artist whose country rock album Come On Over sold a staggering 34 million. You appreciate sincerity? Well, perhaps... 'Wow! This is a lot of audience. I think Glasgow is ready to party tonight...' You like cheese? Between Shania and her glitzy nine-piece band featuring three dancing male violinists, some dodgy hairdos, lots of air punching and one of those godawful shoulder-slung keyboards, there was enough to supply Pizza Hut for a year. But the 100-minute show was slick and it was spectacular, even if the Canadian diva confused the audience of 8000 at the start. When her silhouette appeared behind a lantern-shaped white curtain, we waited for Shania to be unveiled only for her and her band to dash on from the side before launching into Man! I Feel Like AWoman. The newer material was a mixture of schmaltzy, anodyne ballads and hackneyed MOR pop/rock. With fireworks, tickertape and clouds of dry ice, there was a Eurovision tackiness to it all. It was on the material that harked back to her country roots, such as the ballad Forever And Always and Thank You Baby that Shania, for all her energy, showed some real soul. After disappearing down a hole on the stage, held shoulder high by her band, Shania reappeared for the encore wearing a Scotland football jersey and brought the night to a close with Still The One and A Million Times.Whether Shania impresses you much or not, she's surely the best thing to fill a Scotland jersey for years. When Shania is working, like she has been this year, her song Eja travels with her and she makes sure she gets quality time with him. "He's very good, I mean he's been traveling since he was born so he's been on the go from Day One and he's great with it all, really good," Shania says gratefully. "It's tiring," Twain admits. "But I make little rules, you know. I like to be home every night for bath and bed time and we spend our mornings together. Or I'll make sure there's a time in the middle of the day if I can't be there in the evenings, that I get to go visit him and we have lunch together. And you know, we always manage to, I think, spend more time together than a lot of mums get to that work 8 to 5. So I find it's pretty manageable." |
