| Look up Shania Twain in a rock encyclopaedia and the chances are she'll be classified as 'Canadian country singer' - which, while true, is anything but the whole truth. She was upgraded into a genuine global superstar when Come On Over become the best-selling album ever recorded by a female artist by racking up over 34 million copies; better than Madonna, Diana Ross, Cher, Barbra Streisand - better than anybody. And with current album Up! supplying another string of hit singles to join the likes of That Don't Impress Me Much and Man I Feel Like a Woman, she remains a performer with maximum crossover appeal.Shania flew in last week for the British leg of her Up! world tour which includes a sell-out NEC show on Monday and a return trip to Birmingham on Sunday, March 7. And although she now has to combine her career with looking after a two-year-old son, she still loves life on the road."I have a lot of fun with touring - it's the big payoff," she says. "I can see on their faces what the songs mean to |

| them I'm affected by music, when I sit and listen I'm high by it, so when I see I'm affecting them the same way, I really feel I've done what I came to do." Born into a desperately poor circumstances - she started singing at the age of eight to supplement the family income - Shania now lives in a Swiss chateau with husband Mutt Lange, the record producer who played such a big part in transforming her musical image. But although the success of Come On Over, the fifth biggest-selling album of all time, made her financially secure for life, it didn't blunt her determination to develop as an artist."We wanted to put something together that was bigger and better," she explains, "and the whole thing is so much bigger and better than I had experienced last time. "With Come On Over I was keeping my fingers crossed for a bigger record than the one before, it was like a goal."With Up! I don't have the same goal - I just really want to know what people think of it. I'm excited to hear."We travelled around a lot more, we used music from all over the world, from India, some American musicians, Vienna, Ireland, Italy, Paris, the Caribbean. We did it differently and it came together insmaller pieces over a longer period of time."It is different. You know it's me, but the way I sing with my guitar when I'm writing music, I was never able to translate that very well on to the microphone. It's like being in front of a camera - unless you forgot it's there you kind of act a little differently. Now there's a presence and projection, without singing loud."Mutt talked me through it - he's such a great producer."As a team we put more into this record than ever before. We really have gone totally all out, we've laboured over it and I'm totally thrilled with the results."I put this music on and I don't know whether to cry or jump for joy, I just feel so emotional about it." http://iccoventry.icnetwork.co.uk/0800whatson/0410musicnews/content_objectid=13971312_method=full_ siteid=50003_headline=-Twain%2Ds%2Don%2Dright%2Dtracks-name_page.html The world-renowned singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette will host of the 2004 Junos Awards. | Wednesday 24th March 2004 - Wenerei 24th Maehe 2004 One of the first things Shania bought for herself when the big bucks started rolling in was a couple of horses to ride. Here stable has grown since then. "Yeah, I have three Tennessee Walkers and I have one Canadian police horse. And that's a warm blood, that's a whole other thing altogether. And then I adopted an Arabian stallion, a little Arabian stallion, he's really quite something. I just saved his life, he was going to get put down and I adopted him so he's kind of the newest of the batch," Twain says of her growing stable. According to an article posted at the SMG website, Shania has broken another sales record..this time in the UK! "Shania Twain broke box office and ticket sales records when her European tour reached the M.E.N. Arena, Manchester. The one night show sold over 18,300 tickets and grossed in the region of three quarter of a million pounds. " Congratulations Shania! ....Tracy Hautanen said a lot more people have been talking about coming this year. "This year we hope to have a lot more numbers," said the customer service manager at the Shania Twain Centre. "We hope to have more local people this time around." The dates of the 2004 convention were posted on the Centre's Web site recently, causing a huge spike in the number of hits....The details of this year's convention have not yet been finalized, but don't expect to see Shania in town. "We never plan the convention with hopes of Shania attending," Hautanen said. However, this year organizers are trying to get "someone from Shania's past" to be a special guest. The itinerary for the event should be similar to the inaugural convention. "We hope to keep it to about the same as last year," Hautanen said. "We're also adding in some new fun and exciting activities." She said one of the big hits at last year's convention was the auction. "We've already started collecting articles for this year's convention and it should be amazing once again," Hautanen said. "(Shania) is very supportive when it comes to auction items for the convention." Shania Twain Centre: The Shania Twain Centre website has announced the dates for the Second Shania Fan Convention to be held in Timmins, Ontario: Aug. 5-8, 2004! The countdown for this year weekend of fun at the Shania Centre has started! Stay tuned for more information on the schedule and the registration to come soon! In spite some folks saying Shania might some day go completely pop, she says that'll never happen. "I mean I'll never not be country, how can you not ," Shania asks. "How can you be something and then not be it any more? I mean I just don't understand that. Country is so deep in my roots and such a huge part of my youth, my most impressionable years, that it's just not going anywhere and I think even for people who listen to me in pop and all that sort of thing, the style of the way I write, which is very conversational lyrics, very real lifestyle lyrics, comes from my country roots." ~Becca~ |
