Saturday 21 February 2004 - Ratapu 21 Pepuere 2004

Given a little time just to herself, what does Shania like to do? She says, "Well, I enjoy getting a massage, that would be luxurious. I enjoy being with horses, I'm like a kid in a candy store if I'm around horses for the day. And just doing laid back things. A day of luxury would be reading, just sitting to read, or a day in a book store, that would be really fun."

Shania presented the International Male Vocalist Award to Justin Timberlake. And no, there was no Super Bowl antics.

When you have enough money to live like a Queen, with others doing menial tasks for you, Shania Twain says she resists giving over personal tasks to others. "I do a lot of my own shopping. Sometimes I have somebody go out
and just pick out a bunch of stuff for me if I'm in a rush and I'll pick through it, but I'm pretty hands on that way. I wouldn't just let someone dress me, I like to pick things that are comfortable and that's the most important thing, whether it's in fashion or not, it has to be comfortable. So I'm very involved in all of that; after all I have to wear it, so..." Shania also doesn't feel that she has to appear looking like "Shania" the star every day.  "Oh, there are a lot of days where it's very low key. Make-up for sure. You know, I don't always use a make-up artist. It's a little bit of both I think, it just depends on what it is that I'm doing."

Country  diva Shania Twain rocked into the UK last night as she kicked off the British leg of her world tour by wowing an 11,000-strong crowd at Wembley Arena. Shania, who was voted fourth worst-dressed woman in the world behind Paris Hilton, Madonnna and Britney Spears in a recent poll, strutted through her set in a funky outfit, dripping with costume jewellery
and looking svelte in diamante-studded black trousers and vest top. The Grammy Award-bagging country star was clearly thrilled to be in Britain for the tour, which was to have ended with a sell-out spectacular for 9000 fans at the SECC on Sunday. But the show sold out so quickly, the singer added a second date on March 10. Last night, record-breaking Shania thrilled fans as she played songs from her last album Up!, which has sold almost a million copies since it was released over a year ago. She is the first artist to score three consecutive 10-times platinum-selling albums in America. The sexy 38-year-old Canadian star has every reason to be pleased as she rolls into Scotland later this week on the tour which kicked off  five months ago. With record sales clocking in at more than 34m, she is the biggest-selling female artist of all time.

Shania continues her Up! world tour in Glasgow this weekend. Shania reports, "Things are very, very good right now. Of course we travel a lot we'll be traveling constantly for at least the next year. Life is going good I have no complaints. It's tiring juggling career and being a mom at the same time, but really life is great."

For some, Shania Twain has been so economical and yet imaginative with the facts of her early life that the official version almost amounts to a virtual reality. For others, it's her record producer and husband, Robert "Mutt" Lange, a man who previously steered Bryan Adams and Def Leppard to mega-platinum success, who effectively makes her records, tweaking every last little detail of the sound in the studio. Then there are those who object to the way she looks and behaves onstage and in her videos. "She's Nashville's highest-paid lapdancer," sneers Steve Earle, for instance. But for the millions more who buy her records and flock to her shows, none of that matters. They simply love the way she sounds and looks, as the massive sales of her albums and singles amply prove. The Woman In Me, her first Lange-produced album, sold tens of millions. By the middle of last year, just before her current album Up! hit the shops, Come On Over had become the most successful album ever made by a woman, with sales of more than 34m. Success on that sort of scale was always the game-plan."We record music to commercialise it, for relating to the masses. If you don't have that intention, you shouldn't record it," she maintains. Not even her most ferocious detractors, however, would suggest that Shania (or Eileen as she was back then) hasn't paid her dues."I first started performing in front of my family and friends when I was six years old," she recalls. "By the age of eight, my parents had me singing in bars. That's where I learned to be an entertainer."It's hard to imagine a tougher way to learn. Her mother was a kitchen worker at the Mattagami Hotel and, once the sale of alcohol ceased at 1am, would bring out onto the stage little Eileen/Shania, clutching a guitar that was almost as big as she was."Sure, I resented it," she admits. "The bars were very rough and an unsuitable environment for a young child. They were smoky, everyone was half-drunk and fights would often break out. A lot of the time I was half-asleep because I would work late nights but still have to get up for school the next morning." When she was 21, her mother and stepfather were killed in a car-crash and Eileen, now taking the stage name Shania, took a job as a lounge singer in order to support her two teenage half-brothers.Things have been different since she met Lange, 17 years her senior, at a Fan Fair in Nashville in 1993 and subsequently married him. Now millions listen to her, but are they hearing the real Shania? She, for one, hopes not."I enjoy being on stage because the fans have a good time," she says candidly. "I'm lucky enough to write songs a lot of people can relate to. For a couple of hours, we know each other. But if I was singing about my private emotions, it would seem like a private joke." Shania Twain appears at the M.E.N. Arena on Thursday, February 26. 7.30pm.
