PaHe was the old man of the Picks, but certainly not the old master by any stretch of the imagination. Pa's 22½ seasons resulted in 17 last-place finishes. He owns the eight worst annual records of all-time. That's ugly. Good thing winning isn't everything. Pa was a charter member who was sadly dropped from the competition during the fifth week of the 2002 season. A roller-coaster family life reached a terrible low, and the unfortunate membership change was made. His Picks career ended after more than 350 NFL Sundays. In the good old days, Pa's unique style led to many laughs and entertaining moments. He always had the courage (or lack of good reason) to pick a winless team, or pin his hopes on hapless underdogs. You learned to expect the unexpected from Pa. He shockingly won his first title in 1988 in a tiebreaker to end Blaine's eight-year reign. Pa achieved a perfect week in 1994 by going 10-0, and collected a second championship by the skin of his teeth in 1996. His career record is 2,559-1,873 (.577). Upon Pa's exit, the Picks Oversight Committee established "Pick Like Pa Week" in his honor. Every year, each competitor is now required to pick at least five underdogs on the first Sunday in October, which is the same week Pa left the Picks. |
