Someone's about to change my life aroundChapter 1After I went to the Philippines in 1990. I kept writing to young lady and she kept writing back. Her name is Emelyn. Sometimes she even calls me on the phone. We wrote to each other for almost two years. I remember every Friday when I came home from college, I had gone directly to my computer to type a letter to respond to her. I mailed my letter the next day because sometimes I had spent the whole Friday night just writing to her.In one of my letters, I even proposed marriage to her. When she received that letter, she called me right away. It was very late, so I did not get to talk to her. The next morning my mother told me Emelyn called. My mother told me that she said "yes" to you. Out of happiness, I yelled aloud. With the help of my Congressman's secretary, I filed the necessary paperwork for Emelyn to come here to the United States with a Fiancé Visa. The papers were done in October, and Emelyn arrived two months after that. She was arriving at San Francisco Airport in Cailfornia that night at eight o'clock from the Philippines. Emelyn was coming because of me, so I had to go. I wheeled myself back and forth through the terminal because I had mixed feelings of happiness and anticipation. The sliding door opened often but no sign of Emelyn. All my family kept on teasing me, saying, "Emelyn is not on this plane." It was after two hours of waiting in the front row of the line that she finally appeared. When Emelyn came out of the sliding door, I did not wait for her to come to me. I rolled my motorized wheelchair toward her. I welcomed her with a big hug as I gave her the flowers. When we turned away from the sliding door, we faced everyone that came to the airport. They were with tears of joy rolling from their eyes. I know what you are thinking; "Emelyn is using you to come to America" or "She will end up divorcing you." Yes, I heard that before, and many more. Nevertheless, I did not pay any attention to any of it.
We needed to get married within ninety days because of the Fiancé Visa. If we did not get married within ninety days, the immigration would have reported Emelyn to return to the Philippines. The only available date was Thursday, January 28, 1993
