    Wool Hearts Bookmark

Sweet little bookmarks to make for friends who have helped you through your journey, or to make for friends currently going through their own journey.

This easy craft doesn't require a sewing machine or extensive sewing knowledge. You only need to know how to do a blanket stitch. The pattern yields a homemade bookmark that may help demonstrate how you feel toward a special friend.

    You'll Need:

  • Embroidery thread
  • Scissors
  • Wool or wool-blend felt in 2-6 colors (wool felt generally is thicker, has a nicer texture, and crisper color than the typical thin craft felt)
  • Pattern pieces
  • Print out the pattern pieces. Cut out the small hearts in various colors. The large pattern piece is the backing piece, and it is cut from one complimentary color.

If you want the hearts to have messages on them, embroider the message(s) on first. You could embroider a name or Bible verse, etc. Be sure not to get too close to the edges of the hearts, since the decorative blanket stitch or whipstitch will be along the edges. If you'd like, a group of people can work on the bookmark together, with each individual decorating a separate heart (you can add or remove hearts as needed--the pattern is easy to adapt). What a precious gift this would be to your loved one undergoing a mastectomy, or just in need of some love.

Now, simply lay the small hearts onto the large piece one at a time, and begin to blanket stitch or whipstitch them to the backing piece using embroidery thread. You can use contrasting or matching colors of thread.

This craft is super easy to do and only takes one or two hours, yet wool or wool-blend felt helps give it a special feel and lasting quality.

Now place it inside a funny, encouraging book, and give it to your friend!

This pattern was made by Melissa, October 2006, for Flattops. It cannot be redistributed. Be sure to check with your friend regarding wool allergies; the craft can also be done with normal craft felt. Flattops is not responsible for anything occuring as a result of using this pattern.
