The crafts on this page provide a way to help your local friends, or help people in other countries and areas. The global listings are for charities that collect crafted items. The local listings are crafts your friends with cancer might appreciate receiving. Please note that patterns may be free online, but they are only free if you are using the items for personal use. You may not re-sell items made from online patterns.

If you don't participate in an anonymous giving program, you'll often automatically end up on that charity's mailing list. If you prefer not to be, be sure to inform the charity when turning/sending in your craft.

    Global

Crafts to make for strangers (who are simply friends you don't know!).

    Bandages

Bandages--Knit or crochet bandages for people with wounds from such conditions as leprosy. Global Health Ministries provides instructions and a place to send completed bandages. Note:Global Health Ministries has currently discontinued this project. You can knit or crochet baby caps instead (see link for more information), or baby blankets that are 30 inches square.

    Blankets

For animals--Sew, crochet, or knit blankets for animals in shelters.

For children--Project Linus' program donates blankets to seriously ill children.

For people in Canada--Knit squares for Blankets for Canada. Crafted squares are joined together to form blankets for those in need.

For people in USA--Knit squares for Warm Up America. They will be joined together to make blankets. Check your local craft stores for drop-off locations.

    Local

    Crafts to make for friends.

Knitty.com's breast cancer issue (printable PDF file) contains a knitted chemo hat pattern on pages 3-4, knitted comfort socks on pages 5-6, and a couple knitted scarf patterns.

Lion Brand Yarn's website has a few free patterns for chemo caps, including a cheery chemo cap, fun fur chemo cap, and ribbon & flower cloche.

Prayer/Healing Shawl pattern is available on Lion Brand's website and the official Shawl Ministry site.

Also, check out the craft section on Flattops for oodles of gift ideas for friends.

And for even more ideas, the website Creative Kindness offers projects and links to projects to make for those who are in need, from those with cancer to the elderly. You can find the projects at www.creativekindness.com. They also offer a list of charities.

Please note that Flattops has no means to check the efficacy of listed charities.
