Front Covers Magazines

Prior to Magazine publishing there were handwritten codex, manuscripts, diaries, news bulletins, short periodicals, journals and educational text books which production grew together with developments in print and publishing.

Over period of time the definitions become more define and distinctive as to:
magazines being generally mass published speculatively by commercial publishers by the same title (magazine name) and distributed between newsagents, bookshops and other retail establishments.
journals and periodicals are type of serial, defined as a "publication with its own distinctive title, limited in circulation, with little or no advertising, edited and published by, or for institutions, clubs, and societies for sale predominantly to their members.
news bulletins - or rather news letters are today free on line marketing tool distributed to subscribers by e-mail.

Many magazines may be bought on subscription. The weekly Tatler (1709–11) and Spectator (1711–14) were the earliest periodicals, quickly achieving considerable circulations. In the 18th-century, c.800 titles were published and the longest-running general magazine being the Gentleman's Magazine from 1731 until 1907.

The earliest periodicals were printed in Germany the monthly Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen (1663-1668), in France Journal des Sçavans (1665) and in England the English Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London (1665).
