were handwritten codex, manuscripts, diaries, news
bulletins, short periodicals, journals and educational
text books which production grew together with developments
in print
and publishing. |

Over period of time the
definitions become more define and distinctive as
to: |

magazines being
generally mass published speculatively by
commercial publishers by the same title (magazine
name) and distributed between newsagents,
bookshops and other retail establishments. |
|
journals and periodicals
are type of serial, defined as a "publication
with its own distinctive title, limited in
circulation, with little or no advertising,
edited and published by, or for institutions,
clubs, and societies for sale predominantly
to their members. |

news bulletins
- or rather news letters are today free on
line marketing tool distributed to subscribers
by e-mail. |
|
|
Many magazines may be bought on
subscription. The weekly Tatler (170911) and
Spectator (171114) were the earliest periodicals,
quickly achieving considerable circulations. In
the 18th-century, c.800 titles were published and
the longest-running general magazine being the Gentleman's
Magazine from 1731 until 1907. |
|
The earliest
periodicals were printed in Germany the monthly
Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen (1663-1668), in
France Journal des Sçavans (1665) and in
England the English Philosophical Transactions of
the Royal Society of London (1665). |
