GD Basics Introduction

Quote
'I wanted to communicate to as many people as possible, but also to make popular form of art that was more personal and less manipulative.'

GRAPHIC DESIGN - [GD], for many years had been associated with printing industry and recently included in Art exhibitions showing some of the most entertaining, informative and innovative artworks in galleries and museums.
Evaluating various dictionary definitions, we can say that GD is a process of developing an idea for the purpose of information and communication based on history, research, style/trends, industry and consumer needs.

The graphic designer role has been extended today, and we are all familiar of the new visually astonishing, interesting, and pleasing effects used by graphic designers in their design for print and for the Internet.

Special effects can be achieved by combining many different skills and processes used by artisan, craftsperson, performers, musicians, film makers, writers, architects and technician from the past as well as present. This means that, whatever is happening in art, culture or in politics, it will be shown in artists works created during that period of time.

In order to succeed in a designers environment one must concentrate on the design principals taking into consideration the past as well as the present trends, styles and media to be used in the final presentation. Graphic design is the most complicated area of the arts serving industry as well as our community and society.

Whatever kind of design we need to produce 'plan of action' is essential, which requires focus and ideas with thinking through, a good general knowledge and research. We research our theme by: choosing appropriate media to be used, typography, various layouts, scale and size, colour coordination and of course we have to establish our audience-to whom the design is directed to.

Quote
'You have to have the idea before you can go to the computer or your work will lack authority. The way I do that is with a pencil, paper and stupid little drawings.'

The basic visual components of graphic design are individual letterforms, symbols, signs and images that can be arranged to express a point of view.
As we all know design for print differs from design for the web. The basic differences are: image and file resolution, colour, scale and the use of typography.

Individualism and the individual is still an important factor within today's creative corporate institutions and statement below by El Lissitzky summarizes it well as:
"FOR MODERN ADVERTISING AND FOR MODERN EXPONENT OF FORM THE INDIVIDUAL ELEMENT - THE ARTIST'S 'OWN TOUCH' - IS OF ABSOLUTELY NO CONSEQUENCE"
