In first half of the 20th Century, we saw big and quick technological changes (development of the personal computer and web design- software) - as fast explorations and intellectual developments within societies and cultures which had an impact on graphic design profession.

Together with technological developments the graphic designer role has been extended and the expectation from employers and consumers alike are not only to develop and translate idea in to functional application that inform, describe and communicate the message but also the graphic designer needs to be able to cross boundaries in this multidisciplinary 21st Century profession which will contribute in achieving clarity within graphic designs.

Modern graphic designer converts space into time (as in advertising and animation) by combining images, text and sound in time based technological interference which is the new digital media, where team working is essential.

Based on the definitions on graphic design the most desirable skills that every graphic designer should have are: ideas, knowledge of art and design development processes, an eye for detail, experience in computer systems and software, use of type/typography, image development and image manipulation, colour coordination, presentation, layout skills, be able to follow the brief and collaborate with other designers, writers, illustrators, photographers, writers, editors, printers, account executives and others.

Graphic designer career path has a wide spectrum of industry to choose from as indicated in the categories section, furthermore one can specialize in illustration, photography, multimedia interactive design and progress through work experience from entry level production artist to art or creative director.
