After the preliminary round, the three last placed teams from each group are leaving. The remaining teams gather into 2 main groups (1=A+B, 2=C+D).

The Danish matches are played in Cakovec.

The gods of handball have not been kind to the Danes this year - adding to the many injuries which has crushed all preparations and dreams of a medal, we have landed in the most difficult group. We may have to say goodbye to the Danish team already after the preliminary round. The drawback of having a very attractive national league is also, that many foreign players know the Danish players too well.

The team list will introduce you to the players, many whom you have never heard of before. For example Lise Knudsen, Anne Petersen, Tine Ladefoged and Rikke Nielsen. I personally find the last mentioned the most interesting:

Rikke Nielsen (Aalborg) has just played eight matches in the Danish league and nine matches for the national team - an unusual situation indeed. She is 26 and has just finish her education as a nurse before she finally left the safe 1. division, where she has played for many years and moved up in the league with Aalborg. The many injuries on the natiol team suddenly gave her the chance of a lifetime. Together with Rikke Hørlykke," the other" Rikke will share the role of playmaker (usually the job of injured Kristine Andersen).

Not so new is Rikke Skov (Viborg) but worth keeping an eye on anyway. A long period of various injuries have kept her away from the nt, but she has now fought her way back (not 100% fit, but it will come slowly). She is tough in the defense and plays left back.

An injury in the fatal match against Slovenia took away this only good shooter from the distance and the center pillar of the defense. The team was left in a total state of confusion and lack of self esteem. Understandable for a team which has really only trained together for a week and the many inexperienced players, who are the reserves of the reserves on their league teams, crammed up with foreign players. But the total break-down of the following match, which sent the Danes home before the main round, gives no reasons to excuse.. it was simply the worst and most lame performance ever made. And the match could have been won, the chances were all there if the players could have managed the most basic skills -like throwing and catching - or thinking.. But they won the honour of being the first team in 13 years who did not make it to the main round, and that is an embarrasing label. Not to the new and inexperienced, who should never have been participating (but there were no others to send) but the few remaning core players.

A very surprising result - the "usual suspects" did not get the medals this time - Norway did not even get to the Olympics - and new nations want to mingle, eg. the African and Brazil. Some Danish trainers regret that the technical development seems to have stopped, though.
