World Championship in women's team handball 2001

Danish matches

14.-16. December 2001

See my news section for the individual matches.

The team members you find presented on the players' list and on the general player info page.

The results of the preliminary matches:
Group A: Denmark 10, France 8, China 6 and Holland 3. The following are out of the WCh: Ukraine and Macedonia.

Group B: Sweden 10, Hungary 8, Spain 6 and Angola 4. Out of the tournament: Rumania and Congo

Group C: Russia 10, Jugoslavia 7, Austria 7, South Korea 4. Out of the tournament:: Japan and Greenland (the latter just thrilled to be part of it all and maybe the happiest of all losers)

Group: Norway 10, Slovenia 8, Brazil 6, Italy 4. Out of the tournament: Tunesia and Uruguay

Big surprises are Sweden and China.

The level is surprisingly low with most teams. The genereal development is unfortunately that many players put all their energy into league teams and choose not to be part of the national teams. In Denmark two examples are Tonje Kjærgaard and Heidi Astrup.

Matches played in Italy:
Denmark's matches are first played in Bolzano
1/8-finals: Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone and Trento
1/4-finals: Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone and Trento
Semifinals and placement matches: Bolzano and Trento
Bronze match, finals and placement matches in Merano

Even though the Danes reached the goal set by coach Pytlick (amongst the first six teams), the loss of the two last matches seemed a big blow, because it would have been possible to win if only.... The Danes are still too inexperienced and compared to the two opponents East European playing style and sheer body volume, they are too small and more technically refined. They simply got tired struggling with these big women.

My Olympics 2000 theme

The team for the WCh in 1999 for comparison.

The Danish players of the "good old days" meaning the team, which culminated with the gold medals at the Olympics in Atlanta in 96.

More details of ex-players in genereal for a nostalgic trip to when medals came easy..

Pytlick states that his goals for this WCh is to become among the first six teams. For the next WCh in 2002 he hopes to become among top four.

Do you have any photos of the Danish national team players to share with us?

One who once did so was Sam Jørgensen attending the pre-Olympics in Sydney

Amongst the audience you will also find the players of Viborg, who helps coaching the Greenlandic team a bit. You may also see Anja Andersen, who has one of her Slagelse players as part of the Danish national team (Mette Meelgaard) plus a few other international players. Hong is not amongst them.
