self-directed learner

"Animal Kingdom" notes

These notes were taken while Mr. C was giving a lecture on the Animal Kingdom. From this, I learned about all six animal kingdoms (Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia). Furthermore, I learned more about the Animal Kingdom (or Kingdom Animalia) by understanding the many different phyla that exist in just our kingdom Porifera (sponges), Annelida (segmented worms), Nematoda (roundworms), Platyhelminthes (flatworms), Echinodermata (e.g. sea stars), Cnidaria (e.g. jellyfish or coral), Mollusa (e.g. clam, octopus, snail), Arthropoda, and Chordata (vertebrates). I was really interested in this unit because we learned more about ourselves as humans. This shows that I am a self-directed learner, because I had to bring myself to study on my own for the chapter test that came up a couple of weeks later. Taking good notes helped me greatly when the chapter test came, and for that, I got sixty-four points out of a total of seventy, which averaged out to a B.
"Rise of Totalitarian States" one-pager

For this project, Mr. Boone had us divide into groups of four. From then, we as a group were to pick a topic from a list of about twenty to make our project on. We chose the rise of totalitarian states, which occurred after the end of World War I; leading up to World War II (from 1919 to 1939). This is the time that dictators such as Adolf Hitler of Germany, Benito Mussolini of Italy, and Joseph Stalin of the USSR came to power. As a team, me and my group were to make an informative video (about ten to fifteen minutes in length), type up a one-pager, quiz, and activity (crossword puzzle, word search, etc.) for the class. In this one-pager, we were to create a summary, make an outline, record the ten most important ideas, write a list of vocabulary words or key terms, make a timeline, and put down two quotes from two major significant figures during that era. I liked the process of making the video; it was fun, but though we tried making it informative, we ended up fooling around and messing up a lot more than we expected. However, without the help of a teacher, we were still able to create and present as a group, our project.
