Lynn Baker with the WOYKS

My current "band," Lynn Baker with the WOYKS, began in Denver, Colorado in 1994.  The term "band" is applied very loosely to this aggregation because I invite musicians to perform with the group based on the current project and their interests and abilities to engage in the project.  This happy arrangement has enabled me to work with some of the finest musicians in challenging environments that stimulate everyone's creative impulses.

Many people are interested in the meaning, and pronunciation, of the name of the group.  Well, the name can be thought of like a Brooklyner asking for a hot dog with everything, as in "Give me a dog with the works."  Just substitute my name for the hot dog and you've got the meaning and the pronunciation!  In other words, the hot dog (me) doesn't taste nearly as good alone as it does with the right condiments surrounding it!

Most of these musicians and others are represented in recordings on my MP3.com site, where you can listen to performances and purchase CDs.  These offerings will expand as the tour progresses, so bookmark my MP3 site and check back often to hear new music.

Some notes about the MP3 recordings

• MP3 finally puts the artist in a position to control his/her own creative expresssion.  No more A&R man deciding which "box" your music fits, no more delays in production, no more nerve-shattering haggles with record companies, or any of the other impediments that keep the artist's vision from his/her audience.  Now, the artist is in near-complete control of their music.  However, the artist still won't earn any money unless interested listeners support them.  So when you visit my site, download some of the music, and if you like it spread the word to your friends that have similar tastes (or people you just want to annoy!).  I've priced the recordings to be easily affordable and appreciate your patronage.  You can also add my banner to your web page.  Anything we can do to help eachothers' cause serves the music that we love.
• Since my recordings are of jazz and experimental music I only use live recordings.  I believe that the "on the edge" energy of a live performance, where the musicians are fearlessly exploring their sonic environment is the best way to present the "of the moment" essence of the music.   I will gladly sacrifice hearing the occasional unbalanced mix, scuffed ensemble playing, and "missed" notes that are part of a live performance to experience the passion of the moment.  I hope you also appreciate this "warts-on" aesthetic!
