Here's
Steve Owen, Director of Jazz Studies and my gracious host, and his first
year Jazz Repertoire class. This was my first event at U of O and
got the day off to a great start. We discussed methods of learning
chord progressions and forms of jazz tunes and worked on some exercises
to increase musicians' ability to link what they hear to what they play
on their instruments, a vital skill in jazz improvisation. Mike Denny's
second year class was great to work with also, as we discussed ways of
incorporating greater freedom of melodic rhythm in their lines. The
Jazz Arranging class had been given a challenging assignment of composing
for middle school band and we talked about ways to make this a successful
musical experience for students, instructor and the arranger! The
U of O first and second big bands were at the end of my day here and I
had a great time working with each group. The second band was led
by Graduate Student Ed (sorry I forgot your last name Ed!) and he was doing
a great job of getting them started. Steve's band was working on
new student compositions, one of the strengths of this program, and were
very good about working with some new ideas I shared with them. |
| I was
also able to visit some of my former teachers. Here I am with J.R.
Moore, my former saxophone instructor and one of my mentors. I am
pleased and proud to report that the entire U of O music program seems
to be growing and I wish all the best to my alma mater and her students
and faculty. |
