This is Prof. Martin Behnke rehearsing the Willamette University Jazz Ensemble on Tuesday evening.  We worked together for an hour and a half on some music they were preparing for an up-coming concert.  A great group of musicians, not all music majors, who were very fun to work with.  I enjoy working with liberal arts college students, they are intellectually interested and almost always willing to try new ideas - this group was no different in this regard.  Best wishes, folks.
Martin again "warming up the audience" at the 10:20 am Music Convocation.  This was held at the Rogers Rehearsal Room of Willamette's beautiful new performing arts addition.  There were about 45 students and faculty there to hear my "raps" and the tunes.
My eyebrows are raised and I'm gesturing, I must be saying something important!  We spoke about careers in music, "derivitiveness" in jazz and other musics and "free" improvisation.  But we really let the music do most of the talking.  I had a great time playing with this combination of faculty, community and student musicians, especially the unrehearsed improvisation that Mike Nord (guitar) and I performed.  Thanks to all the musicians for a great time.
As I said, we did more than talk, here's a shot of us performing.  We played Mike's Stairway Blues, and my compositions Lament, November Mourning, Foote Steps, and Bigs Digs.  The audience was very appreciative of the playing and receptive to what I had to say.  Like I said before, I enjoy working with folks who are open-minded and interested in diverse opinions.
