| As usual,
Andy keeps everything happening... at once! and I didn't have time to get
a lot of pictures of these events. However, I hope to be able to
get some frames captured from video and post in the near future.
Working with his community
band on a calypso tune was a bunch of fun. This is a great group
of student and community members who exude love of music and the love of
playing it. Big kudos to Andy for being able to manifest this spirit
in all of his ensembles.
In the Jazz History lecture
I presented some ideas about the characteristics of Bebop and discussed
how Cool Jazz and Hard Bop were each reactionary outgrowths of Bebop traditions.
My comments and examples elicited a lively exchange with the small class,
which I was very happy to engage.
The Saxophone Master Class
dealt with concepts of tone production. The Jazz Improvisation Class
dealt with techniques to allow musicians to play what they were hearing
and then used sections of Miles Davis' (?) Lady Bird to apply some
of these techniques.
Be sure to keep your ear to
the ground for an exciting new jazz camp that Andy's planning for June
of 2001. It's specifically dedicated to serve the youth of south
Chicago and will certainly be an important program for years to come! |
