Seasonal Fly Choices
The following chart is something I put together to illustrate the flies that I tend to choose at different times of the year. The trout, of course, don't read books and charts, and are by no means bound to my little calendar. In fact, if I asked ten of my fly fishing buddies to create a similar chart, it would come out ten different ways. What I am trying to accomplish here is to give beginners or visiting anglers who may me unfamiliar with the "local bugs" a starting point. As you can see on the chart, some flies work on and off all year, while others are based on hatches that come off only during certain periods. Be observant when you're out there fishing. If you notice lots of trout rising, try to determine what kind of bugs are on or just below the water's surface and "match the hatch". Remember, size and shape are nearly always more crucial than exact color, and a good presentation will always catch more fish than a good fly.
