Paint Job:

Day Two: Getting to Work

Preparation :

When we finished up day one, we just left everything as it was in the garage, so there wasn't much prepartion work that had to be done.  We hunted for some sockets and screw drivers for a while as they were all over the garage floor.  After that, we rolled the car out onto the driveway and then prepared our compressor and sander for today's work.  And this time around, we wore our dust removing masks.

The Work :

First off, we gave our car a good wash in hot, soapy water.  It was literally covered in dust and and other nasty stuff, so we removed all of that junk, and for once the paint actually looked kind of good.  After the car wash, we began the process of sanding.  That took quite a while with only two people working on an entire car.  Anyways, we started up the sander and then proceeded onto sanding the roof of the car.  We wanted to start on the easier things to sand, just so we could have some good practice.  Since the dual action sander couldn't reach all the spots on the roof, we sanded all we could with that, and then proceeded onto sanding the spots where we missed with either a block sander or just by hand.  My brother and I decided on just sanding the paint down to a shade of grey (stripped paint) and sometimes down to a shade of white (primer).  The first few times that we tested out the sander, we accidentally hit metal, which wasn't a problem, but it wasn't what we intended to do.  There was also a dent on the roof (shown in a picture in 'Day One').  We would take care of this by sanding down the area of the dent down to metal, and then later Bondo-ing it, which would come in day three.  After the roof was fully sanded, we then proceeded onto sanding the doors and hood (another easy job).  We did the same process in having my brother use the dual action sander, and then having me come back with the block or hand to finish off the piece.  After we got done sanding the doors and hood, we then went onto removing the last of the plastic panels in the interior of the car.  So at this point, all the plastic interior panels have been removed, all the seats are gone, and the carpet has also been removed up to the pedals in the front.  'The hatch' picture shows this very clearly.  At the end of the night, we rolled the car back into the garage, and cleaned up, with day three awaiting us.
