SHIPPING

(a Port in a Storm)

Fremantle should not forget it's heritage as a Port City but should also keep abreast with technological advancement.  Building a new bypass road will not on it's own alleviate the problem. We need to develop a strategy with efficient road/rail infrastructure to effectively cope with the increased activity of a modernized shipping port.  This needs to be done in cooperation with ALL stakeholders including the waterside workers, the transport workers, the FPA, the Council, the Chamber of Commerce and the shipping companies all working in unison to achieve an efficient result.

The idea of a Fremantle bypass has divided our city in more ways than one. This is a typical example of a political issue where the wishes of the electorate appear to conflict with the needs of state and the wider economy. This issue should involve considerable analysis exploring all options.  Rail is widely acknowledged as being a very efficient and environmentally sound means of transport that could be much better utilized.

Ships from China currently go to Sydney with goods transported across the country to Perth.  I propose creating a shipping route from China direct to Fremantle for goods to be trucked and/or railed to the eastern states.

I would also address incentives to encourage ship-building in the Fremantle region.
