| HEALTH As minister for Health, the incumbent member for Fremantle planned to downgrade Fremantle Hospital and to remove 300 beds. I believe that Fremantle Hospital has potential to be the leading cardiac facility of it's kind. As a former heart attack patient I would not be here today if not for Fremantle Hospital's efficient cardiology department. I am committed to expanding Fremantle Hospital beds and reducing waiting times for all types of surgery. I will work to reverse the contraction of services advocated by the current Government. I will work to achieve the upgrading of Fremantle Hospital and to encourage more specialist doctors and INCREASE the number of nurses. Mental health problems need special attention so I would work to upgrade Fremantle's Alma Street clinic to ensure there are high quality facilities in this region. I believe that too many young boys are prescribed dexamphetamine medication and too many young girls are prescribed SSRI anti-depressants. I will work to create strategies that utilize counseling and other alternate methods of addressing their issues without developing drug dependency problems. The rate of SUICIDE by disenfranchised men, particularly fathers, is higher than the road toll and higher even than that of young adolescents, many of whom come from sole custodial households. I believe that these suicide statistics will be drastically reduced by removing the gender bias in the Family Law arena and providing more effective counseling services. This will also help stem the incidence of adolescent girls from broken families who are self harming at an alarmingly high rate. |
