| BUSINESS and the ECONOMY Successful local businesses are the lifeblood of our local community by providing employment and attracting visitors as well as servicing the needs of locals. As the major power broker of the ruling party, the current member for Fremantle is more involved in STATE politics than local business issues. For nearly a decade I was a Councillor of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce and sat on numerous committees during that period. This gave me a good insight into some of the problems and the needs of local businesses. I pledge to maintain the Fremantle CAT service and to increase it's reach. EXTENDED SHOPPING HOURS is question is being addressed by referendum and I will support the wishes expressed by the majority opinion. As Captain Munchies, I pioneered 24/7 trading in Fremantle with considerable success but this was conveniently subsidized by US Navy visits and other port activity. I believe that the term "EXTENDED Shopping Hours" is a misnomer that would be better described as "Sunday Trading" which is currently allowed under existing laws in the Fremantle CBD being a tourism precinct. Late night shopping might provide extra employment and attract more day/night visitors to fuel the local economy but this would place an unfair burden on small business battling to compete and could send some to the wall so a balanced approach would need to be followed. There is no simple answer to this issue which can only be resolved with close communication between the City Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Department stores, the small traders, the specialty stores and all other stakeholders. I will work to facilitate a win/win/win outcome for all parties concerned. There are no problems, only solutions and opportunities. |
